Understanding Self-Assessment and Its Importance for Professional Growth
Self-Assessment is an important aspect for every individual for developing themselves for their growth in the professional world. Self-Assessment is the process that allows me to understand my level of understanding to a certain extent as compared to the previous results (Yan, 2020). This helps me to note down my positive attributes and some of the areas of improvement that I need to focus on for my future career growth. This involves the use of some of the most commonly used questions about my strengths and weakness in my characteristics for becoming a leader. Thus, there are some strong and weak areas in my life, too, which I have found after my own self-assessment.
The main importance of the self-assessment test of the individuals is that it makes me confident about my knowledge and abilities in different fields (Ma & Winke, 2019). It also helps me in taking quick decisions in times of complexity. Lastly, self-assessment provides me with the direction for my training modules developing the positive attributes and working on especially on the areas of improvement for my career growth in the professional world (Oc, 2018).
The Myers-Briggs theory helps every individual in understanding their leadership traits by acknowledging some of the basic aspects in their daily life. This model consists of four different elements such as Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I), Sensing (S) or Intuition (N), Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) (Pesha, 2020). This helps the individual in understanding his/her type of personality by answering some of the basic elements of the Myers-Briggs theory.
Another thing to be mentioned here is DiSC. It is a behavioural assessment tool depends on four personality tests that are as follows:
D=Dominance
i=Influence
S=Steadiness
C=Conscientiousness
Being a consultant tool the DiSC model provide a better understanding by adopting the appropriate behaviour with others. For example, this can be employee engagement. It is noteworthy that the concerned model helps to measure the general behavioural style of an individual based on the aforesaid traits.
Every individual has some of the inherited skills from their forefathers. Certain theories also state that leaders are made because of the essential inherited skills within them (Daniëls, Hondeghem & Dochy, 2019). I have worked in several companies as a team lead and have gathered different experiences in my professional world. Through these experiences, I came to know about some of the positive and as well as negative aspects of my leadership traits. I used to follow the democratic style of leadership. This is because I believe that it is essential to involve every employee in the decision-making process and take insights and ideas from their perspectives. This ensures a sense of belongingness within the minds of the subordinates where they will be able to work freely without any supervision. Some of the positive attributes of my leadership style are as follows:
Based on the result of my assessment it can be stated that my D score is decisiveness. In support of this statement, I would like to state that the as for having my high D score, I always tend to speak fast even before the thinking of the opponent people. One thing that I would like to mention here is that due to having this high score, I always prefer checklists following which I aim to encounter the challenges. On the other hand, influence or the I profile style I feel that most outgoing personality. In support of this statement I would like to mention that as per my attached score I feel that I can limit myself through omitting the fear of being ignored and losing myself. Another thing that I feel is that my score depicts me to be more social and enthusiastic. Therefore, I feel that I have low I profile style.
Myers-Briggs Theory: Understanding Your Personality Type for Better Leadership
Conversely, my S profile score is average. As such it is worth mentioning that the individuals having high S profile always intend to be tempered and sympathetic. However as per my score, I would like to state that I am a combination of calm and patience. Following my S style, herein I will be always focusing on cooperating others as well as getting motivated through this cooperation. In addition to offsets, as per my score I have understood that my conscientious personality makes me a combination of orientation of analytical attention. On that note I always enhance the medium pace following the systematic approach for any tasks. Moreover, DiSC model has helped me to understand that I promote the idea of thinking in a broad manner. However, I need to improve my social awareness skills.
Communication is one of the essential elements that all leaders need to ensure within the workplace for the smooth functioning of daily operations. Communication plays a vital role in creating a positive impact and connection between the team members and the supervisors within the workplace (Giudici & Filimonau, 2019). As a leader, I always tend to follow that there is an effective flow of communication among the different levels of management. The employees must be free enough to ask about their queries at any point in time. I am normally an extrovert person, which helps me to express my views and opinions clearly to my teammates. This can be analyzed when I was working as a Team Leader at Sterling Talent Solutions. While working there, I had to handle all the operations with my team members. I always focused on motivating the team members so that they are able to work freely without any pressure. (Momeny & Gourgues, 2019). Lastly, I ensure that there is an effective utilization of the available resources of the organization. Thus, as per the total score of my leadership personality test, I have achieved 92 out of 100 which denotes that my overall leadership skills have played a dominant influencing factor to my subordinates. The team members are also satisfied while working under my guidance and free to ask about any query related to their roles and responsibilities.
Another important leadership trait within me is empathy. As a leader, I always believed in maintaining an effective relationship with the employees of the organization. I always followed the principle of two-way communication between the team leaders and the employee. This helps in engaging the employees more into the work where they can come up with their innovative style of working for the betterment of the organization (Holt, 2022). During my working period, I had been given the opportunity for working as a team manager and a leader where several employees were responsible to be accountable to me. This results in insisting the employees be creative enough in their decision-making in complex situations. Thus, it helps me in having an effective connection with my team members (Meinecke & Kauffeld, 2019). I always try to motivate and influence them to give their best potential for effective production. It is essential from my side to keep the employees motivated enough in every aspect of the organization. This helped them to achieve their targets within the deadline. Some of the most strategies used by me are by providing monetary benefits to the employees who are working for long hours at the time of emergency. This results in keeping the employees satisfied who are always there to work effectively, achieving the team targets within the specified deadline. Lastly, I prefer to delegate the task accordingly to their specialization rather than ordering them according to my preferences. Thus, as per the leadership personality traits score, it can be analysed that there has been a positive trust factor prevailing within the internal environment of the workplace and everyone is available to help others at times of emergency.
DiSC: The Behavioural Assessment Tool for Better Understanding and Employee Engagement
I have come to understand that there are no hard and fast scores as cut off for this assessment. My score suggests that I have a good skills of leadership which is necessary for my entire life. I have also come to understand that in order to complete my team assessment, I can coach a group of children, or I can be parenting my own kids. As such, by heading up the committee at the work, church or the school, I can run my own business in the near future. As there is always my room for the improvement, I can learn from my existing skills of leadership. From my score I have realised that as a leader I need to pose my potential stability for keeping the leading track as well as focusing on the goals for publishing them together. As I am average predictable therefore I am capable to enrich my personal stability through exhibiting my emotional as well as the mental stability at the same time. Through being confident regarding my own abilities, I can press the limits. Also being hopeful, I can enhance the circumstances to turn out those positive.
Finally, I am a goal-oriented individual who sets the target and assigns the task to the team members according to their preferences. The plans and strategies are established before opting for a particular project (Watts, Steele & Mumford, 2019). Everyone is made aware of their own roles and responsibilities so that they are able to set their own routine of working rather than working on my directions. Thus, as a leader, I am always focused on my set of responsibilities and also delegate the task accordingly to my team members. As a leader, I ensure that I am coming up with quick solutions for overcoming the obstacles and getting the task completed with minimum complexities. As a leader, I have my own set of visions that I want to achieve for the betterment of the organization and for my career growth too. Thus, I along with my team members work collaboratively to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization.
Every individual has some positive as well negative aspects in personality traits. There were several aspects that were lagging from my side too. These were some of the areas of improvement that need to be enhanced for my professional development. These aspects came into notice after getting practical exposure to the corporate world. The psychological leadership trait theory states that leaders are not born; they are made through proper nurturing in the skillsets. Some of the areas that I was lagging are as follows:
One of the most important factors for me as a leader is about gaining knowledge in different aspects. There are certain certifications and courses that must be completed by me in my leisure time. This will help me in gaining knowledge in different domains. While working at Sutherland Global services I was responsible for handling all the escalations from the client. Then, I had to prepare the daily production reports that were important for the RNR. Thus, I had to face several complexities whole of making the report because of the lack of knowledge about the latest tools and technologies. (Mulyanto, Gunarhadi & Indriayu, 2018). This is something that is new as per my educational background. Thus, I need to undergo proper training and development modules from the company for developing myself and responding dynamically. This is because it sometimes becomes difficult to guide a team where the employees are working on different domains. Considering the leadership score, I have the proper skillsets within me and some of the areas that are required for improvement which will ultimately help me achieve a 100 percent score in the future. Thus, knowledge becomes one of the main constraints that prohibit me from working dynamically.
The Inherited Leadership Traits and Its Impact on Professional Growth
Lastly, it is essential for a leader to come up with innovative solutions that will help in overcoming the obstacles smoothly. There are different approaches of different individuals in coming up with solutions in coping with the complexities (Huda et al., 2018). Thus, it is essential for me in having deep knowledge about the technicalities that are trending in the market. This is one of the areas that have a negative impact on my overall leadership approaches. It becomes one of my responsibilities to bring up effective solutions that would be unique from the other approaches within the organization. Since I have been working as a customer support executive, it was very essential for me to come up with different creative solutions for the customer. There are several sales representatives available in the market and everybody has their own common way of dealing with the clients. This has been one of the lethargic approaches like cold calling or reaching out to their doorsteps (Abbasi, Ali & Bibi, 2018). As a sales representative, it becomes my duty to come up with some innovative way while addressing my clients. This will help in making an effective relationship with my clients who will approach me for their future suggestions. The positive aspects have some negative sides too which I need to work upon on a regular basis and overcome challenges.
Procrastination has been one of the major negative characteristics that have put me into trouble many times. As a working professional, I normally complete all my duties within the specified deadline. Even also as a leader I am very much concerned about getting the task done by my teammates within the specified time period. The main difficulty that I have faced while working in an organization is that whenever I have been assigned a task with some long deadlines, I have a tendency to delay the start of that work. But, one of the positive aspects of my characteristics is that I never miss my deadline and focus on achieving the targets within the time period. Thus, procrastination is a major issue that I have faced and still working upon for my professional development (Wong, 2019). Whenever I have been assigned a task with a short deadline, I start working on the strategies and plans from the first day only. But, in situations where the task has been allotted to me has a long deadline, I normally prefer to start the work after a few days and get it completed within the time period. This has resulted in the contradiction of two or more tasks in some situations. On the contrary, starting a task a bit late helps me to plan my strategy and work towards them accordingly. Thus, procrastination is one of the elements that I need to focus upon and work on the task immediately that are being assigned to me. This will help me in saving a lot of time and focus on different important attributes for developing my knowledge (Wong, 2019). So, as a leader, it is very much essential to cover up all the weaknesses utilize the positive attributes to the best possible extent, and have a bright career ahead.
Communication: The Backbone of Effective Leadership
The psychological leadership theories state that the leaders are not born, they are being developed through their personal experiences and nurturing their skills on a daily basis. Every leader has to respond dynamically according to the needs of the external environment. There have been vast changes in the day-to-day operations of organizations due to the development in technology (Leithwood, Harris & Hopkins, 2020). Thus, there are some of the strategies that I need to follow for improving my negative aspects and taking advantage of the situation. The strategies for improvement are as follows:
- As a leader, it is expected of me to come up with unique solutions that will help in the development of daily workflow and work towards the achievement of the organizational goal. I should be always aware of the necessary changes in the surroundings and anticipate the changes beforehand. This will help me to plan accordingly and work on the strategies along with the team members (Rudolph, Rauvola & Zacher, 2018). Thus, I should be able to gather knowledge about several aspects that are related to my task and domain. A leader should not have limited knowledge on a particular field only. This will prevent his/her growth in the corporate field in the near future. As a customer-centric individual, it also becomes my responsibility to ascertain the needs of the customers according to the trends of the market (Cheong et al., 2019). This will help me in solving the customer as per to the requirement rather than just insisting the customer with any of the products and achieving my targets. I should always take care that fulfilling the needs of the customer is my primary goal and then suggest some of the best solutions for the customer. This will help me in achieving my targets within the specified deadline and the customers will always contact me in case of any future requirements. Thus, an effective relationship is an important element in the corporate world especially in the customer service working domain (Hughes et al., 2018). I need to anticipate the changes beforehand and identify the cause of the incidence. Thus, I will be able to bring up creative solutions for solving the issue along with my team members.
- Secondly, I should focus on working upon the tasks immediately that are being assigned to me. It becomes my duty to lead the team according to the target and plan all the strategies accordingly. As a leader, I also play a role of an influencer and always focus on motivating them in each and every situation within the workplace. This results in giving their full potential for the task being assigned to them and achieving the targets within the specified deadline as a team (Samimi et al., 2020). As a leader, if I tend to procrastinate with the task, then it will have a lethargic effect on my team members too. This will result in decreasing the effectiveness of the team members. As a leader, I should always be active and guide them accordingly. There is certain negative as well as positive in my team members too. I should insist on enhancing the strong aspects and nurture on the weaker sections on a daily basis. This will result in developing their own career too. I always tend to follow a democratic style of leadership where it is essential for every team member to put their viewpoints and ideas for taking crucial decisions and work accordingly for achieving the targets. Thus, daily nurturing of these attributes will help me in minimizing my habit of procrastination whenever a task is being allotted to me by higher management (Rudolph, Murphy & Zacher, 2020).
Conclusion
Thus, it can be concluded from the above analysis that it is important for every individual to ascertain their strengths and weakness and work upon those factors for self-development. Every individual has to develop his/her leadership traits for guiding the team members and getting the task done by them. The main attribute that must be there in me is effective communication. This helps me in communication with each and every team member and makes them aware of their roles and responsibilities. Thus, the employees of the organization would be able to work freely without any pressure or burden on them. Even also, I should be able to motivate the employees working under my team and help them at times of emergency. Thus, as per my level of experience, there are several positive attributes within me and also some of the negative aspects that I need to work upon for my career development.
