Perception of Space

The perception of space is the distances within the environment. This is to understand the needs of the users to create the right amount of space needed. According to CartouCHe (2012, January 26)1.1.3. The perception of space has to do with human environment with four various senses. These are the following senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell. These four senses were important because it can all affect that sense when it comes to the space of the area.

Perception is important for our sense of orientation.

. You see objects and you are geared to them. Especially when on the way and looking for a specific route or destination you orient yourselves using your eyes. The sight is connected to the architectural design of the pavilion, and it has a lot of reasons that is why the people who are using the pavilion should at least have an appropriate view based on what they are doing.

The reasons are the eating area and workplace. The factors that can affect the users when it comes to sight are the following.

First is when eating, the pavilion has trash cans in each four corners this can be affecting to the appetite of the person/s who are eating. The janitor/caretaker who will take the trash, this can affect the appetite of the people who are eating because, they can see the trash.

Second is the workplace, for this part this can be for the people who are doing things like paper works or using of laptop or any other electronic devices, the sight of the users can affect in a way that they are not focused and also the things that are happening around them can also affect what they are doing, and also there should be a area in the pavilion where users can charge their electronic devices so there will be no conflict and distractions.

The figure is the sample of the surroundings in the pavilion.

Second is the sounds, each of the sounds that a person hear has a different area. The hearing of the surrounding affect the architectural design in two reasons first is the reading area and the resting area. First is the reading area, this affects the people who are reading and doing things that can distract others from the things they hear, since the pavilion is open for all there should be a boundaries between the loudness and the quietness of the sounds.

Second is the resting are, we all know that studying is fun but at the same time tiring, since there is a pavilion it can be a resting area for the students to rest while waiting for the next class or rest before doping another work. This can affect the hearing of a person in a way that he/she cannot focused on resting his/her mind because of what they are hearing

Third is the odor or the smell. A person can for example smell the odor of a barbecue or of a bakery from a distance. When you smell such an odor you know that the origin of the odor must be quite close to you. Perhaps you can also identify the direction where the odor comes from because, we cannot visualize odors.

The design of the given space is also affected by the sense of smell because, the surroundings cannot define when you will smell that kind of odor, and we cannot sight the odor we can only smell, and the things that can affect when the users are using the pavilion is the eating are and the eating area, workplace, reading are, and resting area. The eating are can affect by the other in a way that you can loss you appetite because of the unwanted odor.

Second are the workplace and the reading area when you are working and reading your mind is focused on the things that you are doing, the factors that can affect your brain is the unwanted smell and instead of focusing on what you are doing people are tend to be distracted because of the smell and this can loss your focused on the things that you are doing and can be a problem.

Last is the resting area, why the resting is one of the things that can be affected, it is because you cannot rest your mind with the unwanted smell this can also be one of your problem while resting in the pavilion because, unwanted smell cannot make your body relaxed and it is a hassle of finding another area where you can rest.

The sense of touching is a big factor since the touching of the thing around you of that touches you can affect the anatomy of your body. The reasons that can affect the sense of touching are eating area, workplace, reading area, and resting area.

First is the eating area, the eating area is affected because when we are eating we should have the proper posture for eating for our body to digest the food that we eat and the reason for this is that the place or space should have an allotted area for the people who will eat for them to feel comfortable while eating.

Second is the workplace and reading area, when working and reading your area should be like your comfort zone so you can focused on what you are doing the can affect the sense of touching by being distracted by the materials around you like the chairs and the table.

The researcher have studied anatomy and physiology of the body and it can affect the posture and the functions of the body, as a architecture student a architect should know the anatomy of the body to create a proper materials to be use for the users to focused on their study.

Last is the resting area since is the best medicine for being tired the sense of touch of that person might stressed based on the materials, since the body is tired it should be rested, but if the materials that are used for the body can affect the resting and relaxation of the person and that can affect the body of the person and might stressed out.

Application of anthropometrics, proxemics, and ergonomics

First is the application of anthropometrics in the design of the pavilion. But first what is anthropometrics anthros is a greek word meaning man and metre to measure. It is a study of science that deals with measurement of size, weight, and proportion of the human body.

The connection of anthropometrics in architectural design is the body to feel comfortable. There are two types of anthropometrics first is the static structural it is the measurement of the body at rest movement. Second is the dynamic functional, the measurement of the distance when the body is moving.

There are factors that can affect the anthropometrics of a body. The gender, ethnic origin, age, and time or generation are the factors of anthropometrics. The gender can affect the anthropometrics of a body because the body of a girl is different from the boy.

When creating a material for a gender it should be proportion as anthropometrics said the body of a person should be comfortable and the materials to be used. Second is the ethnic origin since each and every people has its own origin, the anthropometrics of the body can affect the things that are used to do like the materials that they used, to use is a factor that is why ethnics is also a factor.

Third is the age, the age is a factor when it comes to the posture of the body as people grow they tend to change their bodies ability and also their body to weaken and since anthropometrics is created there are materials and machines that is used to make the persons in a older age easy to used the product.

Last is the time or generation this can affect the anthropometrics by the development of the products, as time pass by the product become more innovative and as generation to generation there are new materials that are improved for the betterment of the users.

All in all anthropometrics is important to know what to use and what to improve for the betterment of the users since it is connected to the anatomy of the body. Anthropometrics is need to know the proper usage of the materials for the FEU Pavilion do that the users will feel comfortable at the time they use the pavilion. Anthropometric dimensions for human.

Second is the application of proxemics is how a person/s uses space and the effect when it comes to population of a community, behavior of a person, communication towards other people, and social interaction/socialization. There are four distances when it comes to proxemics, intimate, personal, social, and public distance.

First is the intimate distance it is used when the person are closed and comfortable with each other. Second is the personal distance it is like intimate distance but it a lot more space than the intimate but i9d a stranger approach a person that person has a possibility to get uncomfortable. Third is the social distance, this is giving a space towards the person you are to talk to, and if the person does not feel comfortable there is a possibility that the person will make a move to the distance that he/she feel comfortable.

Last is the public distance, is the distance of people does not know each other and there is no interaction occurred. This distance has an effect to the space that should be allotted for a particular person or group. This can affect the floor plan of the FEU pavilion when the chairs and tables are placed because there is a possibility that a person and a group of persons are not close to each other or does not feel comfortable towards each other.

Last is the application of ergonomics, according to Dorhman conculting (2014) what is ergonomics?. Ergonomics is the process of designing or creating products and Ergonomics aims to create safe, comfortable and productive workspaces by bringing human abilities and limitations into the design of a workspace, including the individual’s body size, strength, skill, speed, sensory abilities vision, hearing, and even attitudes.

Ergonomics has a lot of role to the design of the FEU Pavilion because it is the design that matter to make the users comfortable. This is connected also to the structure the way it looked like and the floor plan is arrange accordingly to the most comfortable way for the user to feel comfortable.

Dimension, Scale, and Proportion

Dimension according to SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, a Division of Springer Nature America, Inc. (2008 June, 25) What is a Dimension Anyway? Refers to the given space, if how many dimension is present. It is also to find the measurements to know the specific position.

Dimension has two general definition hausdorff dimension and spectral dimension. Hausdorff dimension is formulated by the early 20th-century German mathematician Felix Hausdorff, which refers to the volume and area of a dimension. Speactral dimension refers to how things spread in a specific time.

The connection of this to the new design for the FEU Pavilion is the measurement and the design on how will you design considering its dimension. The shapes are to measure based on the dimension. It is finding the area of one-dimension, two-dimension, and three-dimension. The figure below is the measurement of the FEU Pavilion.

The scale and proportion are according to Ching, F. Roth, L. Rassmussen, S. E (2012 October, 21) The scale refers to the size of the actual structure in order to use scale, first is to find the ratio depending on the given measurement and then to solve depending on the ratio to be used, since the researcher have set the scale into one is to one hundred, the researcher is to create a scale model of its own design with the given measure of the pavilion to be scaled.

The proportion refers to the relation of size from a part to the whole. Proportion refers to the equality measurements in ratio of the given structure. Proportion is not just about measurement but the proportion of the design to the whole, how can it affect the whole, one part in a structure can be a big deal. The proportion should have the right equality for the result to be correct to answer the proposed problem.

Its connection to the FEU Pavilion the size of the pavilion should be proportion to the space and environment given of users and the space that is allotted to each and every area should be proportion to avoid the lack of space. The scale is to create a smaller example of a structure, to explain it is to represent the measurement of a structure. Its connection to the FEU Pavilion is a big role.

The researcher is to create a design, the sketch and the floor plan, that represent the New develop design for the pavilion. Also by creating a scale model it is to see if the design is appropriate in the eyes of the users and applicable to the surroundings of FEU.

Application of light, color, texture, shape, and form

This are the element when creating the design for the FEU Pavilion this can be based on the buildings that can affect each structures and by that the pavilion will have its appropriate element to be used. The light that present the value, the color that represent the hue, value, and intensity, texture the way the thing feels, shape that represent 2d dimension, form that represent a three-dimension.

First is the light as the researcher has said that the light represent the value. The value is adding value to the color the white for tint, the black for shade, and the tone for grey. Adding white to the color makes it tinted and that tinted makes the sun reflect and no go through. While adding black makes it shade, when at dark the expected color will be darker compare to the original color, and tone is to give an effect to the given color.

This can all be used while creating the design to ensure the combinations of colors for it to be appealing to the eyes and the tint and shade when there is light that can affect the users. When it comes to the meaning in architecture the light can also be describe as sunlight, since the pavilion if an open area the design of the roof can affect the people who will use the pavilion.

The Color the color has three parts the hue, value and intensity. Hue: is the color that can be seen in the color wheel. Value is presented as lightness and darkness of the color, the value of the color changes when white or black is added. Intensity is the quality, high intensity color is strong and bright, low intensity color is faint and dull. This can affect the design if the color that is being used is not appropriate to the design and this can have changes in the other building that are around the pavilion. The figure below is the example of colors to be used.

The texture refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched. The texture is when you see the sketch you should feel the texture of the materials that is being shown and the present the texture of the thing in a picture/ sketch. The connection of this to the pavilion is that it should have the proper sketch for the users to feel the texture within that shape that is being used. The figure is the texture of the roof inside the pavilion.

The shape that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width. This present the shapes that can be used when sketching a design for the pavilion, the shapes represent the formation of the structure and the concept can be seen by the use of the shape and also by manipulating it. This also can create a balance design for the structure by using the different kinds of shapes. The figure below is the shapes that are used for the design of the pavilion.

The form is connected to the shape since you can see the shape and its form when the lines are being connected this presents a dimension encloses volume; includes height, width and depth. The form is also described as the whole structure of the pavilion since different shapes are used for the design which can be form and shown. The figure shows the form of the design that is created.
