Watch the video, take notes and do a Google search for “SWOT analysis” to read articles.
Your first step should be to watch at least one video. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tutorial or music video; just pick something that relates to the type of content you want to create and try it out.
Take notes on what you see in the video:
- The visuals. What is the level of production? Are there any visual techniques that stand out? Is there enough variation between clips or do they all look similar?
- The audio quality. How does it sound? Does it have good audio balance between different elements such as music, voiceovers, etc.? Is there background noise or other distracting sounds like typing from an office computer and dogs barking outside in the distance (this happens).
Take notes on what the channel owner says: Do they have an authoritative tone throughout their videos? Or are they more casual and relaxed in their approach?
Do a Google search for “SWOT analysis” and read some articles on it.
A SWOT analysis is a framework for understanding the internal and external factors that affect your business. It shows you how to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats so that you can develop effective strategies to address them.
To do a SWOT analysis, first list your company’s Strengths: what are your strengths? What makes you unique or special? Next, list your Weaknesses: what are some of the areas where there is room for improvement at your company? Then list Opportunities: what opportunities do you see in the market right now? Finally, list Threats: what could happen to negatively affect your business or cause it damage in the future (competitors).
Use the template in the lecture to write a SWOT analysis for this YouTube channel. The SWOT analysis is a tool for analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that affect a YouTube channel. To complete a SWOT analysis, you should:
- List the strengths of your YouTube channel. These are things that make it unique or special in some way.
- List the weaknesses of your YouTube channel. These are areas that need improvement in order to be successful on YouTube. For example, if you are not well known or have little experience with video production and editing software, then those would be examples of weaknesses to list in this section.
Identify opportunities available to improve or grow your business communications through YouTube by listing what opportunities exist with regard to reaching customers/clients/audiences/etc., how these opportunities could be used for growth and development of your business communications content (i.e., videos), etc.. Note: You should not limit yourself just because there aren’t any obvious “instant” solutions by simply saying something like “exposure” or “growing our brand”. Instead try thinking about areas where there might be room for new ideas that haven’t been tried yet but could work out fine if implemented properly (i e., brainstorming).
The next step in the process of writing a critique is to apply the 5C model. The 5C model is a marketing analysis tool that helps you assess the business environment and strengths of your company, its competitors, and so on. It allows you to determine whether or not you are meeting customer needs, how profitable your business is relative to others in the market, what products or services could be improved upon, etc.
The three factors that make up this model are:
- Customer—Who are these customers? What do they need? How does your product meet their needs?
- Competitor—Who are your competitors? How do they compare with each other in terms of quality and price? Do they have any advantages over other companies in this sector? If so then why would someone purchase from them instead of you (this will give insight into how others perceive your brand)? Moreover if there aren’t any advantages then why should someone choose us over our competitors (this will reveal areas where we can improve ourselves so as not be left behind).
- Cost—How much does it cost for us as an organization/business entity/”brand”/”corporation”/”company”/”shop/establishment/etcetera
To critique a YouTube channel, you will first need to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the owner of that YouTube channel. Then, you should analyze their competition. After that, it’s time to look at the customers and compare them with competitors’ customers. Finally, it’s time to write down a SWOT analysis and a 5C analysis for this particular YouTube channel business communication industry.
Congratulations! You’ve just watched a video, taken notes, researched what SWOT and 5C analyses are, and written two analyses. Now you’re ready to critique a YouTube channel like a pro!
