Elizabeth Bishop was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on February 8, 1911. She grew up there and in Nova Scotia, Canada. Bishop’s father died when she was eight months old, and her mother was institutionalized for mental illness when Bishop was five years old. Bishop was raised by her maternal grandparents and spent much of her childhood in Great Village, Nova Scotia.nBishop attended Vassar College, where she studied English and philosophy. After graduating in 1934, she traveled to Europe on a fellowship from the college. In 1936, she moved to New York City, where she worked as an editorial assistant at Vogue magazine.nBishop’s first book of poems, North & South, was published in 1946. The book was well-received by critics and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1956. Bishop’s other collections of poetry include A Cold Spring (1955), Questions of Travel (1965), and Geography III (1976).nBishop was also a respected translator of poetry. Her translations of the Brazilian poet Fernando Pessoa’s work were published in 1971.nBishop taught at several colleges and universities, including Harvard University and the University of Washington.
