The Importance of People Management in Contemporary Business Enterprises
Human resources are the most integral part of the various business enterprises of the contemporary times and it is on them that the success or the failure of a particular business enterprise depends to a large extent (Sheehan, 2014, pp. 45-49). Furthermore, it is generally seen that the employees are imbued with the responsibility of executing the goals and the objectives set by the management teams of the business enterprises and therefore the effective management of these entities becomes of paramount importance (Sheehan, 2014, pp. 45-49). Moreover, in the present times it is generally seen that the various business enterprises segregate their entire workforce into various diverse kinds of teams and groups depending on the kind of work or task that they specialize in handling (Wellin, 2016, pp. 78-85). The allocation of the kind of tasks or job roles to the employees in which they specialize not only enhances the individual performance level of these employees but at the same time contributes in a significant manner towards the overall growth of the concerned enterprise as well (Analoui, 2017, pp. 56-60). Therefore, it would be apt to say that the various teams or the groups that have emerged as the most important entities within the framework of the modern day business world contributes in a significant manner towards the efficiency as well as the effectiveness of these business enterprises (Brown, 2014, pp. 43-50). However, the various business enterprises need to take diverse kinds of measures to enhance the productivity of these employees like effective motivation, the recruitment of the right kind of candidates, effective retention policies, creation of the right kind of workplace culture within the enterprise and others (Akgün et al., 2014, pp. 67-70). This report will discuss about the manner in which the business enterprises can enhance the performance level of their enterprise through the effective use of these teams and at the same time the strategies or the policies that they can adopt for the effective management of these teams.
ComSyst Technologies or more commonly called by the name of CST is a multinational company which specializes in providing communication software as well as system development tools. The company provides these communication software and system development tools to the defense and the other “emergency serving industries”. The company boosts of a global presence and has its working offices in different parts of the world like Australia, India, United Kingdom, Philippines, South Korea and the United States of America. The company had a very prosperous past however in the present times it is seen that the fortunes of the company are dwindling. As a matter of fact the company under discussion here is losing the competitive advantage which it once held in the international business market and it is a reflection of this particular fact that the company in the recent times has lost some of its major business contracts to its competitors operational in the same field of business. In addition to this, it is seen that the company is facing various kinds of issues like some of the key performers within its framework have resigned, the deteriorating performance of the employees, lack of effective engagement on the part of the employees and most importantly the gap between the technology used by them for the process of their business in comparison to the global advancements in the field of technology. These in short are some of the major issues that the company is facing at the current moment and which have contributed in a significant manner towards the declining fortunes of the company in the business arena.
Case Study Analysis of ComSyst Technologies
The effective management of the people or the employees who are associated with a particular business enterprise becomes of paramount importance for the various business enterprises on the score of the numerous benefits that these employees provide to these enterprises (Jenkins & Williamson, 2015, pp. 87-91). As mentioned above the majority of the business issues that the company under discussion here has been facing for the past two years is because of the lack of the ability of the concerned company to effective manage the diverse kinds of employees who are at their disposal and this in turn is adversely affecting the fortunes of the company in the business arena in a significant manner. Shields et al., (2015) are of the viewpoint that there is a direct correlation between the people management strategies utilized by a particular business enterprises and its overall organizational performance. The individual performances given by the employees can be seen as the building blocks on which the overall organizational performance of the enterprise is dependent. In the present times it is generally seen that there are various kinds of strategies or policies that the various business enterprises commonly resort to in order to enhance not only the individual but the overall organizational performance itself. Some of the most commonly used people management strategies that the majority of the business enterprises of the present times commonly take the help of are motivation, employee engagement, effective workplace communication, reward and recognition and others (Akgün et al., 2014, pp. 32-36).
The concept of motivation is commonly used by the majority of the business enterprises of the present times to enhance the performance level of the various employees who form an integral part of their business enterprise in the most effective manner (Robson, 2015, pp. 56-61). Thus, the company under discussion here can take the help of the various motivational theories like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Hertzberg’s Dual Factor Theory and others for the process of effectively motivating the various employees who are associated with them so that they are being able to perform as per the expectation of the concerned company (Robson, 2015, pp. 97-101). In addition to these, the company under discussion here can at the same time take the help of some effective leader who would be able to not only influence these employees in the most effective manner but at the same time would be able to further enhance the level of their performance as well (Scarborough, 2016, pp. 121-125). One of the major issues that the company under discussion here is facing at the current moment is the issue of poor performance given by the employees and thus the effective use of the concept is likely to help the concerned company in a significant manner. In this particular context, mention also needs to be made about the process of “reward and recognition” which is being used by the majority of the business enterprises of the present times not only to reward the employees who are performing as per the expectations of the company but at the same time to motivate the employees so that they are being able to perform in a much better manner (Wheelen et al., 2017, pp. 67-72). Therefore, the effective use of this particular concept is likely to help the company to motivate the employees and thereby improve the level of their performance. It is a reflection of this particular fact that the company Microsoft takes the help of reward and recognition system to effectively motivate the employees and some of the best performing employees are even provided with holiday gift vouchers to reward the effort that they have put for the cause of the organization (Wheelen et al., 2017, pp. 67-72).
Strategies for Enhancing Organizational Performance
The process of business communication form one of the most integral aspects of the modern day business world and it is generally seen that performance level of an organization depends on the level to which the organization is being able to clearly convey the relevant information to the concerned employees (Bal & Dorenbosch, 2015, pp. 87-89). In this particular context, mention needs to be made about the various different kinds of communication styles that are being commonly followed by the different business enterprises of the present times like verbal communication, social media communication, electronic communication, written communication and others (Bal & Dorenbosch, 2015, pp. 87-89). Migdadi et al., (2017) hold the viewpoint that the performance level of the employees is directly related to the style of communication followed by a particular business enterprise since if the employees are not being provided the required information about the tasks or the jobs that they are supposed to perform in a clear manner then this not only affects the quality of the task which has been completed by them but at the same time affects the organizational performance as well. Thus, it is likely that the company under discussion here, namely, CST is likely to gain in a significant manner if it improves the process of business communication which is being currently used by it for the purpose of conveying relevant information to the employees.
Employee engagement is another important process which is being used in the contemporary business world to influence the performance level of the employees in the most effective manner. Scholars hold the viewpoint that the process of employee engagement is important since this not helps in the creation of effective working relationships among the different employees of the company but at the same time helps in a significant manner to improve the work culture of the company as well (Carlos Pinho, Rodrigues & Dibb, 2014, pp. 119-125). This in turn has a significant impact on the performance level of the employees since researches have shown that the entity of employee performance is directly related to the organizational culture. The company CST thus through the use of this particular process would not only be able to improve the working relations among the different employees of the company but at the same time would be able to improve the organizational culture and this in turn will help them to improve the performance level of the employees. It is a reflection of this particular fact that companies like Woolworths Limited takes the help of diverse kinds of social events, recreational events and others to enhance the engagement level among the employees in the most effective manner (Carlos Pinho, Rodrigues & Dibb, 2014, pp. 119-125).
Motivation
The primary motive of the majority of the business organizations since the traditional times is to earn a higher percentage of profit and it is in this particular context that the concept of organizational performance becomes significant. It is significant to note that the amount of profit gained by a particular business enterprise is directly related to the organizational performance of that particular business enterprise (Lee, 2017, pp. 23-26). The concept of organization performance is in turn directly related to the concept of effective people management skills or the strategies used by the concerned enterprise for the management o the employees (Lee, 2017, pp. 23-26). For example, many times it is seen that the various business enterprises inspite of having the best of all things or resources are not being able to perform as per the level of expectation of everyone because of the ineffective or inadequate people management techniques used by them. It is in this particular regard that the above mentioned strategies or concept of effective people management become very significant. In addition to these, the process of recruitment, selection, the retention policies followed by the concerned business enterprise also play a significant role in the concerned process (Robson, 2015, pp. 51-56). It is significant to note that these roles normally comes under the domain of the human resource management team of the various business enterprises and it would be apt to say that the concept of organizational performance is also directly correlated to the efficiency as well as the effectiveness of the HRM team of the concerned business enterprise (Robson, 2015, pp. 51-56).
One of the major challenges that the majority of the business enterprises of the present times face is the fact that they fail to attract as well as recruit the right candidates who would be able not only to perform in a much better manner within the framework of their organization but at the same time would be able to contribute in a significant manner towards the organizational performance of the enterprise (Kramar, 2014, pp. 144-150). Furthermore, another significant problem which the majority of these organizations face is the fact that even though they have been able to attract as well as recruit the right kind of candidates who would contribute a significant value to their organization the concerned organization fails to retain them in the longer run (Kramar, 2014, pp. 144-150). It is significant to note that this is perhaps one of the major issues that the company CST is facing at the current moment and this in turn has lead to the current condition that it is facing. Thus, the company under discussion here in order to come out of the current condition in which it finds itself in would have to undertake a fresh recruitment policy which would enable the company to not only attract as well as recruit the right kind of candidates who would contribute a significant value to their organization but at the same time would also enable the company to retain them. It is generally seen that the various individuals after completing the on-job training that is being provided to them and also learning the kind of work that they are required to do leave the organization for some other better job opportunity (Kramar, 2014, pp. 145-150). It is significant to note that this acts as a significant amount of loss for the concerned organization since the concerned organization has invested a considerable amount of resources on these individuals in order to provide them the right kind of training and in this particular context it must be said that the high amount of attrition that the company under discussion here is facing at the current moment is a toll on the resources of the company. Thus, the new recruitment policy that the company must develop must entail various kinds of provisions that would help it to retain the individuals who are a part of the concerned company. Therefore, it would be apt to say the effective implementation of the new HRM policies is likely to reduce the problems faced by the company under discussion here in a significant manner. In this particular context mention needs to be made about the recruitment policy of Tesco Plc which has helped the concerned organization in a significant manner in the recent times.
Employee Engagement
Experts hold the viewpoint that the majority of the problems that the various business enterprises of the present times face are because of the ineffective means of communication used by them for the process of conveying the relevant kind of information that would help the employees to complete their tasks or jobs (Bailey et al., 2018, pp. 76-80). Thus, the company CST would benefit in a significant manner and at the same time would be able to solve many of the problems that it is facing at the current moment through the use of the process of effective business communication. The process of effective business communication is not only likely to help the concerned company to convey the right kind of information which would in turn help the concerned employees to complete their assigned job roles in a much better manner but at the same time would help them in a significant manner to improve their individual performances as well (Bailey et al., 2018, pp. 76-80). This in turn would help the concerned company to improve the overall organization performance which has been a major concerned for them in the recent times. A pertinent example of this is the effective communication style used by the company Starbucks which to a greater extent has enabled the concerned company to achieve success in the recent times (Bailey et al., 2018, pp. 76-80).
Problem solving skills have gained a significant amount of prominence in the recent times and it is generally seen that the majority of the business enterprises of the present times are actively taking the help of this particular process to resolve or mitigate the issues that they are facing at the current moment (Sheehan, 2014, pp. 56-60). However, it is significant to note that there are several considerations that the business enterprises need to take into account for the practical use of this particular process. For example, the concerned enterprise needs to weigh all the aspects of the issue and then decide the kind of action that would be not only beneficial for the concerned enterprise but at the same time for all the employees who are a part of the concerned enterprise. Thus, it would be much beneficial for the company CST if they take the help of this particular process for the purpose of solving the various issues that they are facing at the current moment.
The managers in the context of the present day business world need to perform a wide array of job roles as well as shoulder different responsibilities that were not a part of the roles as well as the responsibilities of the managers in the earlier times. In this particular context mention needs to be made about the roles that the various managers of the present times need to perform for the mitigation of the risks as well as the threats that the business enterprise to which they are related faces (Lee, 2017, pp. 87-92). It is a reflection of this particular fact that the present managers need to perform not only the job roles of the managers but at the same time of the leaders as well (Lee, 2017, pp. 87-92). Thus, the managers of the present times are not only required to identify the risks as well as the threats faced by the concerned enterprise but at the same time formulate various kinds of strategies as well as policies that would help in the effective mitigation of these risks and threats faced by the concerned company. The low employee performance level issue and others that the company CST is facing at the current moment can be underpinned to the ineffective management policies that the company has in practice at the current moment. Thus, the company under discussion here needs to needs to take the help of not only effective management practices but at the same time take the help of some efficient manager who would not only be able to identify the risks as well as the threats that the company is facing at the current moment in the best possible manner but at the same time would be able to come up with relevant solutions that would help the company to overcome the rough time which they are facing at the current moment. The integrated role of the manager as well as leader was effectively manifested by Howard Schultz whose effective leadership and management style helped Starbucks to become one of the largest business enterprises of the world (Bailey et al., 2018, pp. 43-49).
Effective Communication
The company under discussion here can take the help of performance assessment system to effectively regulate as well as monitor the performance level of the employees. This would require the company to create regular reports regarding the performance level of the employees and assess them. The use of this particular process would at the same time require the concerned company to provide feedbacks to the employees regarding their performance and also take measures that they could use to enhance the performance of the employees. In addition to this, the inculcation of a continuous learning environment at the workplace would also help the concerned company in a significant manner. It is significant to note that researches have shown that the use of a continuous learning environment within the workplace has helped various companies to enhance the performance level of the employees which in turn helps in a significant manner to enhance the organizational performance itself (Scarborough, 2016, pp. 67-70).
Conclusion
In conclusion, teams have emerged as one of the most important entities of the workplace and it is generally seen that they contribute in a significant manner towards the efficiency as well as the effectiveness of the organization. However, for the effective achievement of this particular goal the various business enterprises need to take the help of various diverse strategies as well as policies. One of the most commonly used strategies by the majority of the business enterprises is the strategy of effective people management. It is a reflection of this that the various business enterprises of the present times take the help of diverse precepts of effective people management strategy like employee engagement, motivation, reward and recognition and others. In addition to these, it is seen that the HRM also plays a significant role to enhance the organizational performance of a company by attracting and recruiting the kind of candidates who would add value to the organization.
