Network Requirements
This is the report about the ABC technology institution which is located in Canberra and is currently running two campuses which are separate at a distance of 2.5 km , the firsts campus has four buildings which includes the IT, physics, chemistry and the library while the second branch has three buildings which includes the administration office, business colleges and a library block.
However the institution management team require the installation of a new network that will make use of the latest wireless technologies and this will enable the students and staffs to use the mobile devices and laptops to access the internet, however the network will also allow the administrators to use the wired network as well [1].
Below are some of the network requirements.
- The network should provide the wireless network access to students and staffs.
- The network should provide the wired network access to the administrators.
- The network should assign IP addresses to the connected devices using DHCP server.
- The network should monitor and report to admin any inappropriate downloads made by the users.
- The network should allow free access to the network by the network guests without authentications.
- The network should support the 6% expected growth in five years time.
- The network should provide network security to the users.
The two figures above are the two campuses floor plans where the network layout is indicated and the positions of the access points is also shown that will allow the indoor and outdoor wireless network access.
The network security is one of the major issues that require to be addressed in the campus network and it can be enforced using the following means.
This is done to restrict the unauthorized people from accessing the network and this secures the company resources including sensitive data, files, software and hardware [3].
- Virtual private network.
This is network security measure that uses the encryption techniques to make the network secure where there is internet connection and thus the staffs and students will access the network remotely through the VPN tunnels to enforce security.
- Employing the security measures
The ABC network will require to put some standard security measures to maintain the network data integrity and ensure that it is secured and usable this can be only achieved using the following techniques [4].
- Encrypting the Wi-Fi network.
- To change router’s default settings.
- By turning off the remote access features.
- To update the router’s firmware.
- By proper Log out.
1IP address design.
The ABC will use the IP address space of 192.167.0.0 to assign the IP address to the various network subnets where the subnets IP address will be able to accommodate the expected growth of 6% in the number of students in a span of 5 years.
The below is the computation of the required IP addresses.
1.1 First Campus IP addresses
This campus will require 650 IP address for IT block, 330 IP address for chemistry block, and 200 IP address for physics block which add up to 1251 IP addresses after the 6% growth of the student’s number who requires the wireless network access in both indoor and outdoor.
Network Security Measures
Therefore,
Total-Hosts = 1251
2j = 1251 + 2
211 = [2048 > 1253]
Network-Bits = [32 – 11] = 21
Network IP Address= 192.167.0.0/21
Broadcast-IP-Address= 192.167.7.255
Network-masks =255.255.248.0.
1.2 Second Campus IP addresses
This campus will require 100 IP address for business block and 250 IP address for staffs and administration blocks which add up to 356 IP addresses after the 6% growth of the student’s number who requires the wireless network access in both indoor and outdoor.
Therefore,
Total-Hosts = 356
2j = 356 + 2
29 = [512 > 358]
Network-Bits = [32 – 9] = 23
Network IP Address= 192.167.8.0/23
Broadcast-IP-Address= 192.167.9.255
Network-masks =255.255.254.0 [5].
The table below shows the summary of the IP address design.
Name of a Campus |

255.255.254.0 |
192. 167.8.1-192.167.9.254 |
1Hardware and software analysis
To implement the ABC network there are various network devices that are needed for configuration purpose which include switch, router, and wireless access point and they will allow the users access the internet and wireless network as well.
Below shows the various devices models that will be analyzed on their features and the best is selected.
- Router devices.

The above tables are the details of the various network devices brands in the market and they can be used in the network installation, however on the side of wireless access point devices the wireless router was selected after the analysis of the various devices due to its ability to transmit signals at a longer distance and with a relative high speed.
2The desired type of link(s) between campus
To connect the two ABC campus networks an appropriate media is required to link the LANs and this is to facilitate the signals transmissions between the campuses, the most recommended link to use is the fiber optic cable.
2.1 Fiber optic cables
The fiber optic cable is used to link the two ABC campuses since it supports high data transmission speed and is more precise to supply the internet services, below are suitable features that made the fiber optic cable to be selected.
- Fast speed in data transmissions. The Fiber optic cable transmits data at speed of 1-10Gbps.
- Torrance to electromagnetic interferences. The fiber optic cable is not affected by the magnetic fields as it uses light princIPles in transmission [6].
- Can transmit signal long distances. The cable transmits the signals for a distance of 10KMs without weakening.
- Low or no signals attenuations. The cable has ability of transmitting signals long distances without being attenuated.
- Supports high data capacities. The fibre optic cable is able to carry 10GB and above for a distance of 1-10kms.
Conclusion
The ABC network will help the users who includes the students, staffs and the guests to have the internet access at their convenient places within the campuses while both indoors and outdoors and thus they will be able to communicate efficiently, share files and access the internet services where the connected devices will be allocated IP addresses by the network DHCP server.
