Professionalism: The Behaviour and Conduct of Individuals in a Work Environment
Personal and professional development encompasses a way in which people can assess their abilities and skills, consider their ambitions, and set relevant goals for realizing and maximising their inherent potential (Stukalova et al. 2018) It is undertaken by means of coaching, educational programs, training sessions, and willpower. The knowledge acquired by an individual should be able to be practised and enhance their competence. Utilizing skills would make people shine in their career through continuous discovery and reflection of areas to be improved. When nurses use a developmental plan for themselves, it gives them ample opportunities to explore their strengths and figure out their flaws in lending quality services. A structured plan would allow goals to be met sufficiently. The study would encompass a comprehensive evaluation of pertinent skills like communication, teamwork and professionalism in the health and social sector. It would also highlight an action plan using SMART objective.
Professionalism encompasses the behaviour, conduct and attitude of individuals in a work environment (Shohani and Zamanzadeh 2017). It can help in paving the way towards workplace success, higher work ethics, strong professional excellence and reputation. Professionalism enhanced workplace competencies on relying on workplace ethics and constricts effectively. One needs to be focused on their job responsibilities, develop a vital image, learn to take initiatives and maintain work habits effectively. Medical educators and physicians are expected to demonstrate professional behaviour On recollection and description of my experiences in a clinical setting utilizing Gibbs reflection, I have had a patient encounter where correct healing actions had to be prescribed for aiding his specific circumstances. In my opinion, ‘right’ healing actions can only be informed by clinical and scientific evidence. Good actions consider patient preferences and values while being consistent with personal clinical judgements (van Overbeeke et al. 2019). As a caregiver, I had to assess needs of the patient while determining the best suited option in his betterment. It has made me realize the importance of balancing diagnostic questions, taking into account therapeutic interventions, and scientific data to support facts and prudent situations. I have had to deduce Various competencies have been generated in medical professionalism, as accredited by council for ‘graduate medical education”, where we were expected to demonstrate commitment in carrying out professional responsibilities, On analysing the case of the patient, I could reflect on the significance of adhering to ethical principles while handling him. I had to integrally follow codes of conduct and principles pertaining to providing clinical care, as discussed by our supervisors. Ethical behaviour included me to keep patient records and vital information confidential, and gather informed consent before initiating practices under all circumstances. I was required to maintain a sensitivity for the population. The idea of professionalism in health and social care also entails demonstration of compassion, integrity and respect, while mediating a responsiveness towards patient and societal needs, that relatively supersedes accountability, self-interest and accountability for committing to excellence. In future, I would integrate the action of following the guidelines prevalent in the “General Medical Council” website for gaining acquiring proper knowledge on the meaning of professionalism and adhering to the valuable principles. The utilization of social media by health and social care practitioners can aid promotion of practical and ethical guidance. Resilience is also important in professionalism for coping skills to manage challenges with constructive and positive attitude. Primacy of the welfare of the patients focuses on trust, altruism and patient’s interests. Patient autonomy incorporates levying sufficient autonomy with patients and social justice encompasses societal contracts, considers available resources to take proper care of the concerned patient.
Importance of Ethics in Medical Practices and Professionalism
Professional communication entails different forms of speaking, writing and listening, and is utilized in various scenarios of interacting with higher health authorities, practitioners, and patients (Kee et al. 2018). It is essential for people to have a formal, professional, and civil tone for leaving a lasting impression on the concerned audience, in terms of colleagues, patients or supervisors. One needs to have clarified and emphatic expression to connect to the individuals desirably. Necessary information also needs to be imparted correctly by mastering the three-dimensional components of language, illustrations, design and organization.
In a healthcare setting, nurses need to participate in assisting numerous people who depend on their care (Arnold and Boggs 2019). It is imperative that guidelines are demonstrated to the families or close ones of the patients, in a formal, calming way to observe peaceful procedures of treatment. Nurses would also require to communicate with medical practitioners for acquiring knowledge regarding the right administration of medicines, the right codes of conduct, and effective sequence of interventions (Butcher et al. 2018). A cordial tone can inhibit potential misunderstandings when one intends to convey significant information. The Shannon weaver model of communication suggests a linear model where senders encode messages through a specific communication channel, after which an encoder codes it into signals (Kubota 2019). Thereafter decoders translate signals into meaningful messages for the receiver. In this case, noise can be observed as unrelated distractions which might tend to negatively impact message reception. On describing my experience using the Gibbs reflective model, I would like to present instance of difficulties that might arise in properly mediating information to senders. Professional communication can also be intended using emails, messages and phone calls wherever necessary (Darics 2020). In clinical settings, it is quite possible for improper content being delivered to the concerned individuals. It had so been that while attending a meeting with a manager, a call had come regarding the health of a patient. Although it was necessary for the calls to be addressed, efficient communication of issue also had to be delivered to the managers (Pollock et al. 2020). I had to be poised to mention concerns in a methodical way while utilizing high-profile language, with adequate fluency. I tried to call back the patient, but he was unwilling to understand my unavailability. I still tried to reduce his stress by mentioning the details of my absence, and how interactive meetings with supervisors are meant to assist patient health. Analysis of my academic experiences emphasize how my communication standards had been commended by my instructors and peers. I have attended multiple medical events, represented my peer groups, been acknowledged for comforting patients in critical scenarios and attending numerous workshops for subject poster presentations. Feedback assessments conducted on the recipients of my care visit programs have focused on the essentials of how I could induce positive work relationships, prevent conflicts and have a steady shift in inducing effective actions my means of clear body language and gestures (Kee et al. 2018). In the near future, I would like to integrate the action of practicing the maintenance of a proper tone and modulating it as and when required. For instance, even if my inherent feelings imply impatience and annoyance, I would have to address issues in a calm way. The significant abilities would help me to function effectively in work spheres, avoid confusion, and inspire others.
The Role of Communication Skills in the Healthcare Industry
Teamwork Is Essentially a Group Effort Accounting For The Same Result Or Objective It Helps In Creation Of Collaborative Efforts Which Aids The Context Of Work while helping in its faster accomplishment (Bryson 2018). Strength of teams can be derived from positive support, assistance, giving fair share, and efficient communication where defined autonomy and leadership is exhibited. Due to my recognition as an individual participating in multiple debates, competitions, interhouse quizzes, where my teams have had the privilege of representing our university, I have gained substantial confidence in my team-building and team-work abilities. Leaders having collaborative mentality can engage people and guide them towards a common goal through distributed organizational structure (Zheng et al. 2020). On description of the event that had taken place during the days of my nursing training and diploma, we have had a few teams opposing to the traditional type, where individuals are dedicated to perform similar functions. Our teams comprised of diverse set of individuals with unique talents and abilities. I would try to facilitate the group efforts through making aligned choices of roles to play and corresponding skills. People from diverse backgrounds were a part of my team and I had to efficiently inculcate their ideas and consider their opinion, to not induce remorse and demotivation. On analysis of the events, I remember including them in group chats, where all perspectives could be considered. The evaluation also makes me highlight Belbin’s team roles, that are clusters of none different behavioural attributes, identified by Merdith Belbin (Aranzabal et al. 2022). In my personal view, the role of a “Co-ordinator” best fits my personality. I tend to maturely focus on the objectives of the team, while also considering contributions of the team members. I delegate work responsibly on recognition of their talents and specialization. I have also noticed myself to be overtly creative and imaginative sometimes which can lead to hindrances in solving immediate problems. I would integrate the possible actions of assisting them with language barrier issues, handling medical equipment as per guidelines (Soga et al. 2022). I would also share informative factual details taught in class and cooperate with them whenever they demanded my availability during work hours.
Conclusion
The explicit incorporation of behaviours and attributes in health and social care is mandatory for health professionals, nurses, caregivers, medical experts and so on. The assignment has observed a reflective presentation of valuable attributes in healthcare such as skills of professionalism, communication and teamwork. These skills are critically important in delivering as per accurate care standards and achieving greater patient outcomes. I have utilized the Gibbs reflection to generate instances from my prior experiences and aligned them with the successful utilization of the above stated skills. It has made me assess my strengths and weakness for enhancement, or elimination, respectively.
After having assessed my strengths and weaknesses through the discussion of essential components in developmental endeavours, I have been able to create a future action plan demonstrating SMART goal.
