Nurses can better manage their practice and provide high-quality care with a PPM to guide them. In the Magnet® theoretical framework, PPMs are linked to nursing satisfaction and organizational effectiveness. PPMs have been shown to improve results for nurses and those they care for, which has prompted nurse leaders to look for new ways to deal with rising health care costs and staff shortages.
Teamwork, good quality care, professional development, and accountability for nurses are only some of the concerns that these methods tend to address (Kaya & Boz., 2019). The primary goal of implementing these new nursing models is to enhance the quality of patient care as well as the job of the nurses themselves (Murphy et al., 2018). We’ll focus on only two models in this section: healthcare delivery systems and professional relationships, because they’re closely linked to the problem of patients receiving the wrong medications.
All of the nursing staff’s duties are assigned, and their efforts are coordinated in this plan or framework, which serves as an additional way to show this concept. Functioning, team, whole-patient care, and primary nursing are some of the most prominent methods of providing healthcare (Ozdemir., 2019). Efficiencies in the delivery system have been improved by the implementation of case management and patient-centered care over the previous two years alone (Pedrosa et al., 2022).
Professional Practice Model for Nursing
Regrettably, many of the problems in the health care delivery system have been generated by government interference in the industry. Health care quality, chronic disease epidemic, and physician shortages are just a few of these issues that need to be addressed to improve the health care system.
Many major health indices, such as infant mortality rates, life expectancy, quality of life in old age, and the frequency with which medical errors and nosocomial infections occur, have shown that the United States’ health care system falls short when compared with other developed nations (Pedrosa et al., 2022). Comparing the United States to other nations on many key health indicators, such as infant mortality, life expectancy, quality of life as individuals age, and the incidence of medical errors and nosocomial infections, has shown a lack of quality in the health care provided to consumers.
Our country is experiencing a rapid rise in the number of people suffering from chronic illnesses. Most doctors and public health experts consider it to be the greatest medical threat to challenge our healthcare system.
There is also an issue of little physicians’ expertise. Our country is currently witnessing a scarcity of primary care physicians that might very quickly become a shortage of medical specialists (Jones et al., 2018). A few physicians available additionally may lack abilities and enough training, consequently immersing themselves in substandard health delivery care
Pharmaceuticals are a profit-driven sector of the American healthcare system. They account for around 15% of the more than $4 trillion spent annually on health care in the United States. The pharmaceutical sector has one of the largest annual profit margins of any American industry. This poses a significant danger to the delivery of patient care.
One of the greatest issues in health care is the dangers individuals confront every day when seeking treatment for their medical conditions. More than 100,000 individuals die each year from causes unrelated to their medical conditions, according to a recent study.
Another issue arises here. Health care fraud and waste in the United States have reached unprecedented levels, making it one of the most pressing issues facing our country today. Health care in the United States wastes an estimated $750 billion per year, enough money to fund Medicare and Medicaid for decades to come (Sales et al., 2018).
The patient care delivery system model contributes to the improvement of patient care by allowing less qualified staff members to do various duties that do not necessitate specialized knowledge. It also provides for patient care needs that necessitate the participation of more than one staff person, such as the transfer of a patient from bed to chair. This model also enables the delivery of client care clearly and efficiently, resulting in an improvement in the patient’s condition (Pedrosa et al., 2022). When this model is used, tasks are accomplished quickly, and there is little uncertainty about the job responsibilities of the participants involved. The concept is also cost-effective, requiring fewer people to improve efficiency and accountability while maintaining the same quality. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the patient care and delivery system allow for consistency in the communication between the patient, nurse, family, and other members of the healthcare team as a whole, resulting in greater nursing and patient satisfaction (Jayasekara et al., 2018).
Two Models for Enhancing Quality of Patient Care
This simply refers to the interactions that take place between nurses and between nurses and other health care professionals when providing patient services to patients. These connections are founded on nurses’ ideas and attitudes about their job as well as their value and worthiness as individuals (Mattia et al., 2018). Nurses who appreciate one another’s abilities, needs, and desires can communicate and consult effectively with one another. They are more likely to collaborate as a team to improve care and advance their careers. In restructured contexts, these nurses will have the highest chance of achieving their goals. It is these same interpersonal skills that are required for effective involvement in interdisciplinary workgroups that are the building blocks of reformed healthcare delivery systems.
Setting and maintaining interpersonal boundaries can be difficult for nurses to manage. Even though patients request special privileges such as social media friendships, expensive presents, or amorous connections, nurses must know that these boundary violations can undermine confidence and cause patient harm. Nurses who violate these rules may be subjected to disciplinary action (Mattia et al., 2018). Nursing professionals must apply professional relationship norms with care and thoughtfulness, and they must keep track of their emotions and reactions while in these partnerships. Managing stress, coping with financial pressures due to a low wage compared to other nursing sector workers, boundary violations, and difficulties in maintaining a work-life balance are some of the major obstacles that face nurses and other healthcare workers (Jones et al., 2018).
Despite these difficulties, this professional practice model emphasizes teamwork, high-quality treatment, and cooperation between nurses and doctors. In mental health settings, nurturing nurse-patient relationships is essential in assisting patients in their rehabilitation. These professional relationships also serve as a safe, trustworthy, reliable, and secure foundation for therapeutic interactions, ensuring that the appropriate drug is administered at the appropriate time and to the appropriate patient, so improving patient care.
Concluding, many nursing leaders have stated that health care organizations that apply nursing professional practice models are likely to reap the benefits of this breakthrough. A PPM is the bedrock of good nursing practice. This evaluation is a valuable tool for nurse executives who want to improve their organization’s performance through a PPM.
