Current Communication Strategies of MWC
In the current world, the possibilities of communication over the internet has become common both for governments and the private sector. Communication can be done over the internet from one corner to another in the blink of an eye. This paper presents web-communication platform that MWC organization can adopt to ensure smooth running of the organization and to reach to all its stakeholders
Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) is one of non-government organization that was set in 2009 by the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). The organization is the only NGO in Singapore which was set by Singapore government. The main of the organization is to check into the Welfare of migrant workers specifically those in manufacturing, marine, and construction industries. The current estimated migrant workers are up-to 1.3 million migrant workers where more than three hundred thousand workers live in dormitories. MWC is able to meets its needs due to the current communication strategies it has in place i.e. emails and 24-telephone line
Currently the organization is experiencing issues with establishing an effective web communication channel. The organization requires a more effective way to engage with all stakeholder through a web-based platform. The web platform opted need to incorporate automation of messaging to volunteers and generate loyalty messages. Second, the current platform is unable to raise awareness for organizational services. It is also worth noting that the organization operates a 24-hour telephone helpline and a student and youth programme
MWC have for years used emails as its major online communication channel. Here is a SWOT analysis of current used online communication tool
Strengthens: Email presents one of convenient ways of sending and receiving messages to migrant workers. The information is presented in form of pictures or texts. The platform is relevant in the current COVID-19 times where social distancing protocol is highly emphasized by Singapore government. Also, in connection to applications lots of volunteers prefer communication by means of mails (Koh, 2020)
Weaknesses: First one must constantly check for emails on their inbox meaning there must be a waiting period for the inbox message to load. Second, both the sender and recipient must have installed email application on their devices which in turn leads to another added cost. Third the amount of attachable files is only limited to documents and PDFs
Opportunities: This is found in convenience and rapidness of applying e-mails as an online tool to communicate information and messages in general
Threats: At times one can experience error for the online server where the inbox message is stored. Also this can hinder accessibility to the file. In cases of a missing alerting system, the message recipient can miss important information or message which us due in certain circumstances.
MVC also uses telephone line which is always available 24 hours. Here is a SWOT analysis of the telephone line
Strengths: The telephone line specifically uses VoIP protocol to communicate. It offers lots of strengthens, first by using broadband internet like model of DSL it is sufficient advantage from making phone call through VoIP. Second the organization do not have to pay for VoIP services as there are provided for free. Calls can be carried any time at any place as long as broadband internet connection is available. Also it offers a range of features like call waiting, three –way calling and call forwarding
SWOT Analysis of Current Online Communication Channels
Weaknesses: One weakness of telephony is that at times it at faced with poor quality of voice; this can result to regular static or echo noises. Second because VoIP works through broadband internet connection, it means that no voice can go through when broadband internet goes through.
Opportunities: The distance of the VoIP call doesn’t matter due to low cost. By so, doing MWC can keep a steady communication which involves low costs.
Threats: Due the lack of battery or integrated power, telephone services might be useless in case of black-out. Due to the dependent on broadband internet it means that a hacke3r can tap through to a call which can results to privacy issues (Kanapathy, 2015).
The major aim of the campaign is to have in place a web communication platform that is able to connect with all MWC stakeholders. By so doing the organization will be in a position to connect with all its migrant workers and able to raise awareness of all its services. The following lists SMART objectives of a web communication platform
- Chatting platform: A web communication platform needs to improve clients support and to increase number of interaction from the current one person at a time to handling of reports simultaneously
- Increase Social Media engagement which will result to increase in migrant workers audience from the current 300,000 to one million.
- Operations: reduce costs by automating and streamlining
- C-Suite: Grow the organization bottom line and at same time
- Attract new sponsors and volunteers through use of WhatsApp messaging application.
MWC aims at connecting with all migrant workers and its stakeholders through an effective web communication platform. The main target audience are volunteers, Singapore government and migrant workers. Volunteers in this case will be those individuals who will enable the organization to raise more capital. Singapore government in this case are the one sponsoring the organization financially. Migrant workers are the organization customers or clients. They are the individuals with whom the organization is supposed to attend to.
The current web communication platform can only utilize informative messaging. This is to inform the stakeholders on status of the organization and pass information to migrant workers. Nevertheless a web communication platform needs utilize both persuasive and informative messages. For example people are able to follow-up on topics on social media and other online places. The website to re-design will incorporate instant messaging; at one point the organization will be in a position to tell the tone of a worker.
As highlighted in the previous section, re-vamping the organization website is the best strategy. In addition to this the organization needs to use other platforms beside emails such as social media. Here the major aim is to provide migrant users and other MWC stakeholders with a platform on how to communicate. Specifically the re-designing the organization website provides MWC stakeholders with an instant messaging tool. Also the tool will have the ability of handling many migrant workers at the same time or simultaneously when needed. Some of the communication strategies which will be utilized includes a combination of tools like social media, engagement with news media channels, digital, and print. It will also involve interpersonal communication.
This campaign aims at having lots of volunteers as possible and able to serve a lot of migrant workers as possible at one time. Also the campaign is aimed at informing and educating migrant workers on their rights and raise awareness of existence of the organization. To do so the organization will utilize several communication strategies for example the website messaging tool which will be re-designed, social media platforms like Facebook, we-Chat, Twitter, and Whasapp. Also, they will be a combination of engagement via news room and digital platforms. At present, a budget of five thousand US dollars has been allocated for this project, nevertheless it will require an increased amount as it will require re-designing of the organization website. The campaign will take place for three months
Objectives of Web Communication Platform
Currently, the organization is using telephony and email as a web communication tool. To communicate with volunteers the organization is using emails. Also the organization uses email as a channel of promotion. To provide support to Migrant workers the organization use 24-hour telephone helpline. The workers are allowed to contact the organization anytime with queries associated with arbitration and transportation of errant employees
Nevertheless the organization has been unable to reach all its stakeholders on time. This proposal advocates the organization to re-design its website to integrate tools like instant messaging. Also the organization needs to use social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to get more volunteers.
- Social Media
This is one of the platforms that the organization will use. The platform is affordable and can be accessible anywhere at any-time to reach a big number of migrant worers
- Website
This tool will be used for instant messaging; rather than the current telephone helpline, website messaging tool will be able to handle simultaneous users.
To increase existence of the organization, search engine optimization will be utilized. After launching the new website, various basics things need to be done;
First the organization needs to optimize Meta tags and title tags of the organization website. Second the organization will need to create an optimized content and increase keyword research. Third, the organization will to create contents and then use what is known as keyword gap analysis to optimize the existing content. Also the organization needs to use digital PR to earn authority backlinks; here the organization needs to promote and create content to new migrant workers with contents like expert insights and research studies.
- Volunteer management system
The organization will have a volunteer management system which assist in reaching more to potential volunteers and manage the existing volunteers
To re-design the organization website various activities need to carried out. This is as shown by figure one below.

The organization needs to have a well web-based communication platform. To ensure this the organization needs to re-design its website to incorporate chatting application platform similar to Facebook chatting platform. This will ensure that the organization connects with all its stakeholders and migrant workers. It is also important for the organization to note that communication via its website is the best option as it will also be in a position to rely all its messages through the internet.
MWC has already embarked on the process of developing a more effective web-communication technique apart from emails. This will enable increase awareness to volunteers and the local community. Also it will result in the increase of manpower of the organization.
MWC needs to focus on adoption of an effective and new online web-based communication to enhance effective delivery of its services offered to migrant workers. To engage more with other stakeholders the organization needs to invest heavily on social media engagement.
