Insights on Singapore’s Types of Industries
Write reflection on Hazardous Industries.
The purpose of this reflective portfolio is to provide a details account of the course that I have learnt related to safety management practice in the workplace of all types of hazardous industries. The essay will aim to focus on various reflective learning related to challenges that are faced by an organization in order to maintain a healthy and safety environment. It will also suggest different management practices that can be implemented in order to improve upon the health and safety environment in the workplace of an organization and also ensure that no harm is being implemented on the workers. The various situations that are encountered by the hazardous industries that can compromise on the level of safety are also explained in details in order to highlight up on the importance of maintaining safety protocols within the workplace alongside the importance of maintaining healthy environment. The essay will also provide detailed information about the status of hazardous industry in Singapore.
The essay will also aim to focus on the insights of the different type of industries in Singapore that is divided into primary, secondary tertiary and quaternary sector.
Before the completion of this module cause related to health and safety environment within the workplace industry I have no detail idea about the working protocol and type of industries that are present within the economic system of Singapore. However, after successful completion of the module course related to diploma in workplace safety I have been able to understand the importance of maintaining safety within the hazardous industries.
There are four different types of industries that were the part of the course that I have learnt. These are the major types of industrial sectors that form the economic background of the Singapore. From the course I have able to gain significant idea related to the industrial structure of Singapore and thereby able to understand the importance of following the safety protocol based on the types of hazards that are involved in each type of the industry.
The primary structure of the industry involves in the overall process of extraction of the raw materials that is used in the manufacturing unit. This type of industries are the ones which are involved with the process of working directly with the resources that are found in the nature and need to be used in the manufacturing unit. The primary sectors form the backbone of the manufacturing unit that can help to provide the materials that are needed in order to make the process of providing raw materials. In the following section I have learnt about the manufacturing unit that uses the raw materials of the primary sector that is needed in the secondary sector industry. The secondary sector thus is consists of all the manufacturing and processing unit that utilizes the raw materials. This type of sectors includes food manufacturing and textile manufacturing. In case of Singapore, the manufacturing sectors includes electronic and chemical processing unit that have high level of hazards involve.
Importance of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
From the overall assignment I have come to know that the secondary unit of industry are the ones that has to deal with most of the worst hazards within the workplace due to the fact that there are use of several hazardous raw materials that are processed and are converted into usable products. I have also able to gain the in-depth knowledge about the activities that are involved in the overall process of manufacturing unit, which are classified in order to identify the needs of each of the activities. The overall structure of the industry within the Singapore consists of all types of manufacturing unit that can help in the overall process of fulfilling the needs of consumer market. Hence, it is important for the manufacturing unit to deal with all the risks and hazards that are involved in the work process.
The very first step of the course that I have completed related to maintaining safety within the workplace environment is to identify the hazards that are involved in the process of each type of manufacturing unit that has the ability to threaten the environment of the workplace. As the threats are being identified, it is possible for the organization to make the planning of the workplace environment along with the safety protocols. The main form of the secondary manufacturing unit in the industry of Singapore is the textile manufacturing unit that I believe has a significant contribution to the GDP and economic progression of the nation.
As the hazards that are related in a manufacturing unit are being properly identify it is important to ensure that all the work activities related to the reducing the risks are being properly identified. Every specific hazards has some specific risk involved that needs to be properly evaluated in order to have the idea related to the measures that needs to be identified. The course that I have taken has also highlighted the importance of formal assessment that is also an important part of this identification along with its consequence. These are few of the new ideas that I have incorporated in my learning process in order to better understand the importance of application of risks assessment techniques. The learning’s have also helped me to develop new skills in related to hazard and risk identification that is an important part of maintaining healthy and safety environment in all types of manufacturing unit.
Examples of Common Risks and Hazards Faced by Manufacturing Units
At the beginning of the course I did not have any practical or theoretical knowledge about proper risk identification. After successful completion of the course related to work and safety management I have changed my belief and thoughts related to working in the manufacturing unit and also following a basic protocol of safety environment that can help me to understand the importance of these protocols in order to reduce the adverse conditions related to all the hazards. Hence after completion of this course when I am about to join any manufacturing unit I will therefore be able to take active participation in the risk planning process and ensure that I am able to guarantee mine safety along with other workers within the workplace.
Risk and hazard identification step that was the initial part of my course was followed by application of proper solution that can help to reduce the effect of risk and hazard that are involved in the manufacturing unit industry. It is important to mention in this context that risk and hazard involved in this unit cannot be totally avoided due to the fact that heavy machineries and manufacturing process are generally involved with high level of risk. However by commensurating the risk it is possible to guarantee maximum safety to the workers and also reduce the adverse effect of an intentional accident that can occur in the manufacturing unit. This is I believe the primary step of risk reduction.
Few of the major examples of risk and hazard that are involved in all type of manufacturing unit workplace can be from the electrical cords. There is always risk of short circuit and spreading of fire from high voltage electrical wire that is an integral part of all type of manufacturing unit which requires heavy machineries in order to make large scale manufacturing process. High voltage of electricity is generally required in order to operate the heavy machineries and hence the risk of short circuit is even higher due to the fact that high insulated copper wire is needed in order to maintain proper safety. The high level of noise that occurs during the time of the machine operation has also the risk of damaging the hearing of the workers. Moreover long duration of exposure to the high level of noise can also cause the risk of permanent damage of hearing ability of the workers. My course have also highlight it up on the Chemicals that are used in manufacturing unit also have high level of risk involved due to the fact that direct exposure can cause harm to the skin and also internal organs of the workers.
One of the common issues that are faced by all type of manufacturing unit is lack of space due to the fact that heavy machineries requires huge amount of space. Hence the risk of confined space can limit the opportunity of the workers to move freely within the workplace. There are risks like lack of oxygen in those confined place that can have harmful effect on the workers and also the employees will not be able to escape from the industry during the time of any emergency like fire or chemical exposure.
It has been identified in the duration of the course that one of the major causes of workplace injuries and hazards accidents is a failure to identify the root cause of the risk. The courts have also highlighted upon the importance of information collection related to the hazardous activities that can help to take proper actions and also identify the causes of the hazards. Conducting initial and periodic workplace inspection can effectively reduce the causes of hazard and also help in the effective planning method. It is also important in the context to identify the exact cause of injury and also the pattern of accidents that have occurred in the past due to negligence. I have also learn to identify similar type of accidents that took place in a workplace that can help to classify the type of accident and injuries that usually take place due to hazardous activities. There are many hazardous conditions that are associated with emergency and non-routine situations that I believe need to be properly identified and implemented in the planning process.
Effective method of Data Collection need to be implemented in order to use the existing information related to workplace hazards and risk. Information related to operation of equipmentand machineries that are required in the process of manufacturing and also safety data sheets that are provided by chemical manufacturers are few of the primary sources of data that need to be utilised for self-inspection purpose. As one of the individual worker in the manufacturing unit it is also my duty to ensure that I keep personal records to keep the updated information related to hazard and risk that are involved with my own activity in the workplace and also ensure maximum amount of safety is being practiced. The course has also helped me to identify a common theme for all the risk and hazard that are involved with the activities. For example it is important to categorise the hazards related to chemical exposure and also electrical short circuits. By categorising the type of hazard it is possible to implement a common solution and safety measures and optimise the work function capability of individual workers in the manufacturing unit.
It is the duty of the risk assessment Inspector to properly assess and ensure that all the equipment and machineries needed in the manufacturing unit are properly maintained which can eliminate all the risk and hazards. Inspection of the storage unit and warehouse can also help to ensure that all the workers in the manufacturing unit are able to operate in a safe and healthy workplace environment. It is also the duty of the inspection manager to ensure that safety and emergency planning are being properly implemented in the workplace environment.
Identification of the health hazards that are associated with the risk and harmful activities are also an important part of risk assessment techniques. For example there are high risks of skin disease and contamination that can be a serious threat to all the workers in a chemical industry. There is also the risk of electrical short circuit that can cause fire accident and can cause physical injuries to the workers. It is also important for the health inspector manager to properly assess the medical background of all the workers in the manufacturing unit. This can help them to take proper actions for all the workers who have poor medical history and also suggest them to take extra precautions while working with harmful Chemicals and other heavy machineries. With the help of the proper steps it is possible to deal with the consequences of hazards that have the capability to deal with the ability to improve over the condition that can help to deal the effects. The emergency situations that can help to deal with the consequence of the hazards that are involved within the activities of the manufacturing unit are one of the prime causes of the accidents that have resulted in the compromistaion of the safety.
One of the positive points of this course is that it have given me detail information and knowledge about all the hazard and risk and activities that has the ability to deal with the consequence of all hazardous activities. The knowledge that I have gained can be utilised in all type of industries in order to maintain workplace safety. I have also got the ability to take active part in future in the areas of my employment in the process of designing a plan for workplace safety and also implementing the same to minimise the effect of hazards and other risky conditions. My awareness level that is needed to identify the risk have also been raised significantly, which has been one of the key skills that I have developed over this course and this will help me in the future to ensure my own safety along with my working colleagues. The knowledge of this course can also help me to provide Full support to the management of my employment in order to improve upon the workplace safety. It is also important for me to report all unsafe working conditions and identify the root cause of the hazard that can help to reduce the adverse effects related to workplace accidents.
In spite of all the wide ranges of knowledge that I have gained from the course, I do strongly believe there are further scope of improvement that can enable the future students to have a greater depth of knowledge related to work and safety environment. The major limitation of this course has been the fact that it has not able to implement the basic theories related to work hazards and safety planning. Hence if I have to design the plan for the course for future time I would have implemented the theoretical aspects of practicing safety and healthy environment in the workplace. With the help of these basic theories it is possible to implement safety planning in all type of industries that are currently present in Singapore. It is also important to incorporate practical learning techniques that will help the student understand the proper way to employee safety practices during the time of emergency. Proper drills that can help the student work effectively during the time of emergency in the workplace are also necessary due to the fact that it can help to deal with minimising the adverse effect of the risky accidents risky accidents.
However the overall course has been one of the effective ways that has enabled me to gain in depth knowledge about maintaining health and safety environment within the workplace. The course has mainly focused on hazards related to the manufacturing industries. However due to the broad area of information that has been used to set up the guidelines of the course the safety protocols that are mentioned can be applied in all type of industries that are present in Singapore. In both primary and secondary sector of industry it is important to follow the guidelines that are mentioned in the diploma course that has enabled in Greater area of understanding.
With increase of workforce in the manufacturing sector of Singapore it is important for all the industries in the secondary and tertiary sector to have proper methods of safety planning in order to ensure effective protection for all level of employees who are directly involved in all the hazardous activities. The knowledge and information of this course have enabled the workers to gain vital information and awareness related to identifying the risk and hazard that integral part of all type of manufacturing units. Hence, the course is of vital importance in the context of the modern day economic situation where there is a great demand of consumer product in the market and all the manufacturing units have to deal with the excessive pressure that increases the risk of accident and hazard within the industry.
In the very first part of the lesson, I was introduced to the various concepts of hazardous industries. I have learnt about the raw materials that are needed in the labour industry and also the source of raw material.
In the subsequent lesson I have learnt about Asbestos, which is regarded as one of the major health issues. I unable to acquire knowledge about the harmful effect related to that substance. It mainly affects the breathing and functioning of lungs. I also came to know about the techniques that are used to monitor the exposure of hazards.
Marine driving is the course of action for the next degree course. There is various occupational safeties that needs to be followed in case of respiratory and circulatory risks. In case of drowning, hyperthermia is one of the common effects.
The subsequent part of the degree course I have learnt about occupational hygiene. In this part I have able to learn about the medicines that are required in case of occupational hazards. I have learnt about the importance of medicine that can help to deal with all type of health risks. The degree course also consisted of the principles of WSH Act 2016. I have able to learn all the major elements related to the act that aims to improve upon the workplace condition. I have also learnt importance of accountability in the workplace that can help to secure workplace safety.
Product safety was the next part of my lesson, where I have gained knowledge about ensuring the safety of a product. I have learnt about the risks and hazard that are associated with purchase of product. This can be applied in order to ensure safety of the product quality that is being purchased by the consumers. In the next part I have learnt about the importance of facility management that is an important part of the dealing risks with the workplace.
In subsequent lesson I have learnt about challenges associated in general industries. It is important to deal with most of the risks in the workplace. My lesson also consisted of risk management in the Retail Industry.
Conclusion
On the concluding note it can be said that the overall diploma course related to health and safety environment in the workplace has enabled to widen my area of knowledge and also help me to identify the theme of hazard and risk that are involved in the manufacturing unit. By proper classification of all the risk and hazard that are involved it is possible for me to take proper intervention and follow guidelines in a systematic manner to reduce the harmful effects of manufacturing unit. I do strongly believe that the materials and information that was the part of this course will help me to ensure my own safety as I get the chance to work in any type of industry.
