One of my favorite books of all time is I Am Legend, and if you don’t know what that is I urge you to remove your self from the safety of the cave you reside in and face the sun. It’s not that painful I promise.
The book talks about a disease that spreads throughout the United States and as far as the main character, Robert Neville, can tell, he’s the only remaining human that hasn’t turned into a vampire. He struggles daily with the loss of his family, especially his wife who after he buried came back to his house the same night, and the loneliness he suffers from.
A few times he almost just leaves the safety of his house just to kill himself with the vampires. The book has every element in a great book anyone could ask for, suspense, horror, even romance. My favorite part of the book is when he checks his watch, and it says 3p.
m. a couple hours later he checks again, and it says 3p.m. It stopped. It’s twisted and evil and the author, Richard Matheson, is a genius.
The reason I was so inspired by this novel is Matheson made a complete community and fictional characters into real people. I felt like the vampires were alive and I started putting myself into Robert’s situation and I felt like I understood his plight and what I would of done would have been similar to his choices. He thought up this fictional location and background story and made it so real that I honestly felt bad for Robert Neville, and understood the fight Ruth went through and was glued to the book then entire time.
I read it about three of four times. It’s mind blowing. I wish I had the ability to write like Matheson, it’s inspiring how legitimate the story seemed. I enjoyed it and hope to one day be able to write like him.
