As President, he was noted for his modest lifestyle and his advocacy for technology, science and innovation. He was also known for his efforts to revive the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing industry. He was fondly known as the People’s President and was honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.nKalam passed away on 27 July 2015 after suffering a cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong.
