Changing Role of Managers
Discuss About The Academy Of Management Learning Education.
The dynamic nature of the contemporary business world has made it of vital importance for the various business enterprises to take the help of diverse kinds of innovative strategies (Stoker, Velde & Lammers, 2012). One of the key strategies which are being used by the various business enterprises is the use of diverse kinds of managers and leaders (Stoker, Velde & Lammers, 2012). The inherent motive of the various business enterprises behind the use of these innovative as well as effective leaders and managers is not only to further enhance the individual performance of the employees associated with the concerned business enterprises which is likely to further enhance the prospects of the concerned business enterprise but at the same time to improve the overall productivity of the enterprise (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Thus, it is commonly seen that the various business enterprises of the present times are increasingly turning towards the various kinds of managers as well as the leaders for the enhancement of the performance of their enterprise (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Furthermore, the managers are required to posses various kinds of skills like team management skills, trust, empathy, managing conflict, the skill of mentoring the other individuals, trying to develop the skill sets of other individuals who are associated with the enterprise and others (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). This paper will discuss about the key skills which the managers are required to have for the effective performance of the roles which are required of them. The paper will also contain a self reflection of my own personal strengths as well as weaknesses on the basis of 10 different diagnostic tools and finally the paper will also an action plan which is likely to help me to overcome the weak segments of my character.
The managers in the present times within the framework of the various business enterprises are required to perform a wide range of activities or job roles and it is a reflection of this particular fact that the traditional role of the managers has undergone a significant amount of change in the present times (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). Traditionally, the managers were imbued with the role to effective manage the different aspects of the business process of the concerned business enterprise (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). However, in the present times it is seen that the managers need to perform a wide range of activities like developing effective ways by means of which they can develop the performance level of the employees associated with the enterprise, taking the help of various concepts like trust as well as empathy for the management of the employees, creation of teams as well as devising ways by means of which they can enhance not only the individual performance of the employees but at the same time the performance level of the entire as well and others (Kim & Mauborgne, 2017). Therefore, it would be apt to say that the changing nature of the business world has made it imperative for the not only the various business enterprises but at the same time the various managers associated with them (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012).
Importance of Teamwork
The concept of teamwork has gained a considerable amount of significance within the framework of the business world in the present times and therefore the various business enterprises of the present times try to take the help of this particular concept for the enhancement of the productivity of the enterprise (Langley et al., 2013). The concept of teamwork gained prominence in the early part of the 20th century with the research of the various scholars as regards the most effective ways through which they could enhance the performance of the enterprise (Langley et al., 2013). These researchers found that the most cost effective manner in which the enterprises could enhance the productivity of the concerned business enterprise is by segmenting the entire enterprise into diverse effective teams which would be responsible for taking care of a particular kind of job (Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). The segmentation of the entire workplace not only reduced the work pressure of the various employees associated with the enterprise as earlier they needed to perform various diverse kinds of roles but at the same time helped them to focus on one particular kind of activity or job in which they specialized or were good at (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Therefore, it would be apt to say that the segmentation of the entire enterprise in smaller teams not only helped in the enhancement of the performance or the productivity of the entire enterprise but at the same time helped the various managers who were associated with the enterprise to effectively manage these different teams as well (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Thus, it is a reflection of this particular fact that one of the primary job roles of the various managers in the present times is not only the creation of various kinds of teams within the framework of the business enterprise but at the same time the effective management of these teams (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Therefore, it can be said that the effective management of the teams has emerged as one of the key responsibilities of the managers in the present times.
Many experts are of the viewpoint that for the effective management of the team the manager needs to display certain character traits or qualities, namely, emotional intelligence, team handling skills, negotiation skills, people management skills and others (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). The concept of emotional intelligence propounded by Goleman in the later part of the 20th century is one of the most important developments of the recent times and many managers are increasingly taking the help of this particular concept for the management of the teams and the individuals associated with the team (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013). The concept of emotional intelligence is likely to help the concerned manager to develop the concept of self awareness which is likely to him or her in a significant manner to understand the emotional requirements of the individuals who are working with him or her and form an important part of the enterprise (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013). The understanding of the emotional requirements of the employees is important as it helps the concerned manager as well as the enterprise to understand the emotional requirements of the employees but at the same time enables the enterprise as well as the manager to devise ways by means of which they can enhance the performance level or the productivity of the employees (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013). Furthermore, the concept of emotional intelligence also gains significance as it helps the concerned manager as well as the enterprise to which the manager is associated to reward the employees as per their emotional requirements (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). Thus, it is seen that the concept of emotional intelligence has emerged as one of the key character traits of the various present day leaders as well as the managers associated with a particular business enterprise (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). Therefore, it is generally seen that this particular concept is being used by the various managers of the present times to manage the different individuals associated with a particular business enterprise in a much better and also to understand their emotional requirements in a much better (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012).
Character Traits for Effective Management
Effective communication skill is another character attribute which is likely to help a particular manager to effective manage the different affairs of a particular business enterprise (Stoker, Velde & Lammers, 2012). The manager of a particular business enterprise needs to constantly convey the recent developments as well as the information or the details about the work which the members of the team need to do with the objective to help the employees (Stoker, Velde & Lammers, 2012). Furthermore, many experts are of the opinion that the concept of effective communication also helps the manager to align the individual goals and the objectives of the employees or the team members with the overall goals and the objectives of the team or the business enterprise to which they are associated (Rezvani et al., 2016). Moreover, it is significant to note that the concept of effective communication skills also enables the managers to effectively convey the target or the objective which the concerned manager and the business enterprise in particular is trying achieve (Rezvani et al., 2016). Many experts are also of the viewpoint that the use of the concept of effective communication skills is also likely to help the concerned manager in the resolution of the various kinds of conflicts which have become a common part of the various workplaces of the present times (Stoker, Velde & Lammers, 2012).
The vision of a manager is also seen as one of the most important character qualities or the skills of the concerned manager which is likely to help him or her in the effective management of the team (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). The vision of a manager is not only likely to motivate him or her to achieve the target as well as the goal which has been set for the team but at the same time is likely to help him or her to motivate the other members of the team for the achievement of the goals as well as the target set out for the team (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). Furthermore, the vision of the manager associated with a particular team is also likely to help the manager to set out realistic goals or target for the team which they can achieve within a particular frame of time (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012). Thus, it can be said that the mission of a particular manager should be to effectively manage the diverse entities of the team taking into consideration that he or she adopt an unbiased attitude towards all the members of the team and should not give undue preference to one member of the team over the other (Joo, Sushko & McLean, 2012).
Emotional Intelligence
Mentoring is another key responsibility of the various present day managers associated with the various business enterprises (Varela & Gatlin-Watts, 2014). It is generally seen that the various employees who join a particular business enterprise often do not have the requisite skills which are needed for the effective performance of their job roles (Varela & Gatlin-Watts, 2014). Furthermore, even after the generally training which is being provided to them by the “Human Resource Management” teams associated with the enterprise it is seen that they are unable to perform their job roles as per the expectations of the enterprise therefore it is one of the primary roles of the various managers of the present times to effective develop the skills as well as the abilities of these employees so that they are able to perform in a manner which is likely to contribute in a positive manner towards the enterprise but at the same time are being able to perform as per the requirements of the enterprise (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Thus, the mentoring role of the managers becomes very significant in this particular context. The various managers of the present times take the help of various kinds of motivational methods for the purpose of mentoring the various entities associated with the enterprise (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Thus, it is generally seen that the various managers often take the help of the various theories of motivation like “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs”, “Hertzberg’s Dual Factor Theory” and others for the purpose of not only effectively motivating but at the same time effectively mentoring the various individuals associated with the enterprise (Chiu, Balkundi & Weinberg, 2017). Thus, the various managers of the present times take the help of the theory of Maslow to help the individuals attain the level of self actualization (Rezvani et al., 2016). The managers can help the individuals to attain this particular level by effectively mentoring them and at the same time by providing them effective training so that they would be able to perform their job roles in a much better manner (Rezvani et al., 2016). The act of mentoring is also likely to help the individuals to have a higher level of job satisfaction which in turn is likely to help the individual employees to inch closer towards the concept of self actualization (Hu et al., 2012). Furthermore, it is generally seen that the act of mentoring is not only required for the individuals who have recently joined the enterprise but it is also required for the individuals who have spent a considerable amount of time within the enterprise as well (Hu et al., 2012). Many experts are of the viewpoint that the action of mentoring the other employees associated with the business enterprise requires the use of a wide range of skills or qualities on the part of the concerned manager like motivational qualities, ;providing effective training to the concerned employees and others (Hu et al., 2012). Therefore, it would be apt to say that role of a manager in the present times has undergone significant changes and it is a reflection of this particular fact that the various managers associated to the business enterprises in the present times need to perform a wide range of activities like mentoring, team management, motivating the employees and others in addition to the traditional job role of effectively managing the affairs of the concerned business enterprise (Rezvani et al., 2016).
Effective Communication Skills
To conclude, the various managers associated with the business enterprises since the traditional times have formed an integral part of the enterprises. Traditionally the managers were required to manage the different affairs of the enterprise. However, in the present times with the changing needs of the business world the various managers associated with the business enterprises need to perform a wide variety of different kinds of roles. Some of the commonly seen job roles which the various managers need to perform in the present times are the role of mentoring the different employees who are associated with a particular enterprise, managing the different affairs of the various teams which have emerged as one of the integral components of the various workplaces, leading the different entities of the enterprise so that the performance level of the employees associated with the enterprise gets enhanced and others. Therefore, it would be apt to say that the various managers associated with the business enterprises have emerged as an indispensible part of the enterprises because of the wide range of job roles which they need to perform within the particular frame of the concerned enterprise. Thus, in the present times it is generally seen that the various managers within the framework of the various business enterprises are not only required to perform the role of the managers but at the same time they are also required to perform the role of the leaders so that they can enhance not only the individual performance of the employees who are associated with the business enterprise but also to enhance the overall productivity of the business enterprise.
In this particular section of the paper I would like to discuss about the strengths as well as the weaknesses of my own character or personality on the basis of the various psychometric tests which I recently undertook. I personally believe that personality forms an integral part of the identity of a particular individual or to a greater extent represents the identity of that particular person. Therefore, personality can be seen as a combination of all the character traits and other qualities which contributes in a significant manner towards the formation of the identity or the personality of the concerned individual. Thus, a working knowledge about the strengths as well as the weaknesses of the personality is very helpful as it provides the concerned individual with an overview of the things which a particular individual is capable of doing and also the things which the things that the individual would find it difficult to perform. It is with this particular objective that I undertook various kinds of psychometric tests with the inherent objective to find out the key strengths as well as the weaknesses of my own personality.
Recently I undertook some ten psychometric tests like Big Five Personality, Self Esteem Test, Belbin Team Roles, Authentic Leadership, Wellbeing Questionnaire, Leadership Self esteem, Empowerment, Negotiation Skills, MBTI, Thomas KilMann Conflict Mode Instrument and others. The results of these tests revealed some insightful information about my own personality which although I had known for a very long time yet had refused to acknowledge it. For example, the results of the Authentic Leadership as well as the Leadership Self esteem revealed that I had average leadership qualities. Furthermore, the results of the Big Five Personality test as well as the Thomas KilMann Conflict Mode Instrument reveals that I am very accommodating kind of a person and during critical situations I get adjusted to the situation. However, the results of the Negotiation Skills reveal that I had good negotiation skills and are likely to help me during critical situations. Thus, the results show that I am likely to have good negotiation skills which are likely to help in the longer run. The Self Esteem Test and the Leadership Self esteem test reveals that I have very low level of self esteem and I need to work in this particular section to improve my prospects. The result indicates that the low level of self esteem is likely to hurt my prospects in the longer run and therefore it is very important for me to develop this particular aspect of my character. Furthermore, the result of the Belbin Team Roles indicates that the best kind of job role which would be most suitable to me is the designation of analyst. Moreover, the result of the MBTI also indicates that I am an introvert, sensing, thinking, judgmental kind of a person. Furthermore, my personality assessment on the Wellbeing Questionnaire is average.
The above results clearly show the aspects of my character on which I need to work on like the development of self esteem, confidence, leadership qualities and others. On the other hand, the results of the test also indicate the areas on which I am good at. For example, the results of the test show that I am an accommodating kind of a person and I am also good at negotiating. Moreover, the results of the psychometric tests also show that the best kind of job role which would be suitable for me is the job role of an analyst. Therefore, I would like to comment in this particular context that these psychometric tests provided me with a lot of valuable information about my own character as well as personality. The information provided by these psychometric tests are accurate I majority of cases and therefore I would use the information provided by these psychometric tests for the future development of my character.
At this particular point of time I would like to comment about a situation in which I was involved in and which would reveal that the information provided by these psychometric tests are accurate to a large extent. A while back I was working as a quality analyst for a company and was required to analyze the quality of the products manufactured by the company. I would like to mention in this particular context that the reason why the company hired me as the quality analyst of the company was the fact that the company in the recent times was facing a lot of issues on the basis of the quality of the products manufactured by it. The company was known for the high quality of products which it offered to the customers however in the recent times due to multiple reasons the quality of the products manufactured by the company was detracting. Therefore, the company hired me with the objective that I would enhance the quality of the products manufactured by the company in a significant manner. Therefore, after I joined the company I took the help of various kinds of measures for the enhancement of the quality of the products manufactured by the company. One of the steps undertaken by me was to cross check the quality of the products manufactured by the employees several times with the objective to maintain high standard of quality. I also urged the company to take the help of various kinds of modern machineries for the manufactured of products and it was the end result of all these measures that with a very short time I was able to enhance the quality of the products manufactured by the company in a significant manner.
I would like to mention another instance in this particular context which further confirmed the results of the above mentioned psychometric tests which I received. I would like to say that sometime back I used to work in an advertisement company as a supervisor. My job was to see that the other employees are working in an effective manner and also device means to enhance their performance. However, I still remember that at one point of time a big project came and I was required to handle that particular project. The deadline for the completion of this project was very limited and therefore I had to effectively motivate the employees who were working under me so that we could complete the project on time. The results of the above psychometric tests show that I had average leadership skills and this particular incident also revealed the same. Thus, I would like to say that I and my team were able to complete the project within the timeline given to us by the client but we were not able to deliver a very high quality as was expected of us. Thus, I am of the opinion that if I had been able to display much better leadership skills in that particular scenario then we would have been able to deliver a high quality project to our client which the client expected us to deliver and we were not able to deliver to them. Therefore, I would like to comment in this particular context that the results are completely accurate and this particular scenario also confirms the same.
The above given psychometric tests conform that I had very low level of self esteem. This is confirmed by the Self Esteem Test and the Leadership Self esteem confirm this particular fact. It is a reflection of this particular fact that I feel very self conscious while addressing people in a group or to speak in public. This is a weakness of my character which I would definitely like to overcome. Therefore, I am personally of the opinion that the development of this particular character trait is likely to not only improve my personality but at the same time my future prospects as well. Therefore, for the development of this particular character trait I would like to develop my public speaking as well as communication skills. I would therefore take the help of SMART goals for the development of this particular skill. The SMART goal consists of five different entities like specific, measurable, attainable, relevancy and time frame. Thus, the plan which I have chalked out for the development of this particular character skill in the following manner-
I would like to comment in this particular context that for the development of my public speaking skill as well as the development of effective communication skill I would take the help of a workshop. The workshop would provide me with the relevant kind of skills which are likely to help me to develop my public speaking skills and also my communication skills. The workshop would provide me with the necessary kind of exposure and also with the opportunity to speak in small groups of people which would help me to develop my public speaking skills. Furthermore, the workshop would also provide me with the relevant videos of public speeches made by the various leaders as well as public speakers which would helped me to learn about the various skills which are required to speak in a effective manner during public speeches. Moreover, the workshop would also provide me with various kinds of demo sessions where I can indulge in small group speaking.
Public speaking is an intangible entity and therefore the achievement of this particular goal cannot be measured in an effective manner. Thus, I would have to rely on the feedbacks given by the professor at the workshop and also about the results of the regular public speeches which the workshop would require me to indulge into. Furthermore, I would be able to measure the efficiency which I had developed in the process of public speaking as well as the communication skills by the effectiveness to which I would be able to speak in a confident manner with the various people and also by the manner in which I would be able to deliver public speeches.
I would like to comment in this particular context that this particular goal is completely attainable and would help me in the attainment of my greater goal, that is, the goal of the enhancement of my self esteem. The attainment of this particular goal is going to require me to work very hard and indulge in various kinds of interactive sessions with the other individuals. Furthermore, the seeing of videos of other public speakers and the speeches made by them is also likely to help me in a significant manner. Thus, I would like to comment in this particular context that the goal which I have undertaken is completely attainable provided I work really hard and am focused on the goal or the target which I have set out to achieve.
I would like to comment in this particular context that the goal which I had sought to achieve is completely relevant to broader goal which I am seeking to attain, that is, the development of my self esteem. I personally believe that the development of public speaking as well as effective communication skills are the key attributes of a person who had a high esteem. Therefore, I would like to comment in this particular context that the achievement of this particular goal is completely relevant to me.
I personally believe that the concept of public speaking or effective communication skill is not something which could be developed within a very short time. However, the workshop which I have joined would provide me with training for only six months which I personally feel is not sufficient time period for the development of the goal which I have undertaken to achieve. Therefore, I personally have given myself a time period of almost a year within the period of which I hope that I would be able to speak in a confident manner in public and at the same time will be confident while having conversations with the other individuals.
