President Trump’s Controversial Stance on Gun Control
Discuss about the Introduction to the Special Issue on School Safety.
I am Jonathon Walker; we have witnessed the recent mass shootout in a school in United States of America where 17 pupils were shot dead. In the subsequent press meet, the lawyers of Mister President Trump’s lawyers made some hilarious comments advocating for not restricting the gun laws and blatantly supported the existing laws regarding purchasing and carrying fire weapons in public without registering it or having proper permit. They stated that:
“A good man with gun should stop the bad man with a gun.”(Time, 2018)
This comment has naturally become the talk of the town within a few hours. Emma said that it is frustrating and also degrading to the teenagers when the senators commented that the teenagers do not know how the government of America works and they do not know what they are talking about. Thus today’s discussion will range from American President Donald Trump’s stance regarding the controlling of purchase of guns and making amendments regarding the gun laws. Emma Gonzalez who is a senior student in the Marjory Douglas High School had lead a rally for gun control on last Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, located in Florida; the day after a gunman shot down 17 students in a school near Parkland.
We see that in the rally Gonzalez directly accused the laws regarding purchasing and licensing of guns in the United States America for the loss of the parents of the pupils who lost their lives due to the shootout in the school. We know that losing life due to the attacks of gunmen in the schools of America is nothing new and each year the same incident takes place.People of Australia should know thatEmma Gonzalez stated that it is ridiculous that in the state of Florida to buy fire arms people do not need to register it and they do not even require permission from the government. It is also a matter of fact that without a license and valid permission people can carry fire arms publicly in Florida.
Later Mr. President of America tweeted and that stated
“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”(Time, 2018)
Gonzalez directly opposed this statement of Mr. President and said that the students have repeatedly reported about the issue and asked how a student of a middle school got access of the fire arms and had it been a knife, the student would not have been able to harm so many pupils.
Bursting into tears Emma stated that:
“Why in America it is harder to make plans for the weekend than buying automatic or semi-automatic fire arms?”
The situation in America regarding this issue is really concerning and Gonzalez further added that:
“When adults tell me I have the right to own a gun, all I can hear is my right to own a gun outweighs your student’s right to live. All I hear is mine, mine, mine.”
Opposing Views: Emma Gonzalez and Student Activism
Emma further stated that the school students who are protesting against the government’s stance regarding the gun control issues, they should read notes to ensure that their statements which are against the government are based on political history, and their statements must be without any flaws to fight the government. With sarcasm Emma stated that she found a website named shootingtracker.com that tracks the shooting records of America and Emma said that keeping tracks would not bring in any changes, instead amending the laws regarding this issue can formulate necessary changes regarding this issue (Staff, 2018). Emma said that in Japan there have been no mass shooting, people of Canada experienced three cases of mass shooting and people of UK had experienced one such case (May 2018). Right after experiencing such incidents the government of UK and Canada has amended their laws regarding gun control and the government of America is doing nothing of that sort.
“I will heal you. We trust in that promise and we hold fast to our fellow Americans in their time of sorrow. I want to speak now directly to America’s children, especially those who feel lost, alone, confused or even scared.”
This is another quote used by Mr. Trump and it can be said that these words would not have the power to heal the loss of the people who suffered and only amending the laws regarding purchasing and carrying fire weapons can solve the present issue (Florida Today, 2018).
Emma said that the boy who shot down 17 pupils was mentally challenged and due to his erratic behavior he got expelled from the school (Oppenheim, 2018). Emma said that this is not something stating which the government can get away with this issue. It is rather believed that had it been a state with restricted licensing and purchasing of guns, the expelled student wouldhave not been able to harm so much with a knife attack. The root cause of the problem is uncontrolled purchasing and carrying fire weapons by the civilians in America. She further stated that providing 5800 US dollars to the victim’s family is not at all a solution of the issue as the lives worth much more than that money(Silva and Capellan 2018). The previous President Obama amended the laws against free purchasing of guns and in the year of 2017, Trump had repealed the order and made it easy to buy fire arms(Scalia 2018). Emma added that the Republican senator Chuck Grassley is the one who backed up the bill that prevents FBI to make the background checks of the individuals who are adjudicated to be mentally challenged.
Emma said that the recent trend of America is to suppress the voices raised by the teenagers by saying that the teenagers are self-obsessed and their opinion does not have a valid point (Staff, 2018).
Emma tried to make the people believe that every individual of America has the right to speak up for the truth and for the troubles they are facing with. ‘United States of America, land of the brave and land of the free’ is becoming a mere quote nowadays and government is distorting the view of the freemen of America (Oppenheim, 2018). It is high time that the government should take some actions before bearing more losses.
This is how the people of America are protesting against the impractical gun laws of various states of America and clearly they are disgusted with the situation (May 2018). It is now our choice whether we, the people of Australia are going to support the point of view of the federal government of America or should we support the viewpoint of the teenagers and the majority of the population of America who are advocating for amending the laws regarding gun control.
