Amir is the protagonist of The Kite Runner. He is a Pashtun and Sunni Muslim, who was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. Amir is a sensitive and intelligent boy, who is often bullied by his classmates. He is also a talented kite runner and is able to win many kite-fighting tournaments. However, Amir is haunted by the guilt of not being able to save his friend Hassan from being raped. This event causes a rift between the two friends, and Amir eventually moves to the United States.
