Problem Statement
The report is prepared to discuss about the analysis of a case study related to problem solving and ensure business sustainability and higher income generation within the mining industry of Australia. The company chosen here is the Evolution Mining, Australia, which has aimed at remaining business sustainable and continue to make as much money as it can. Though few of the members welcomed the new investments to be made and even enabled the company to create new job opportunities for the workers aiming to enhance the economic activities, still, criticism continued and it spread rapidly over the social media platforms, which further created complexities (Mclaggan, Botha and Bezuidenhout 2013). The topic will demonstrate how these risks can be managed and how the use of Neo-humanism and Radical structuralism can be considered as perspectives associated with the solving of various issues and problems that may have been experienced at Evolution Mining in Australia.
The problem statement demonstrates the issues and problems, as experienced during the research. Evolution Mining Company has aimed at making more money and gain higher share of market within the concerned industry. This turned out to be a major problem, as the sole focus of the company has been to make huge amount of money in business and to attain greater market share without considering the other aspects, which drew a lot of criticism on news, social media platforms and also from the various sides of the political divide in Australia (Lodhia and Hess 3014).
Based on the four paradigms, the business organization has mainly prioritised on the functional paradigm, which allowed for working towards the order dimension among the four paradigms present. Therefore, the main problem is the missing of the conflict dimension, which could be related to the complaints and criticisms made by the pubic memebrs because of the company’s aim at making good amount of money and for attaining greater market share, rather than actually being socially responsible towards the community.
According to Hirschheim and Klein (1989), there are four paradigms related to the development and management of information systems and are responsible for making a number of assumptions, both implicit and explicit. Here, based on the case study, the customers have believed that the company aimed at being hypocritical in their desires and intentions, in spite of the fact that Evolution Mining in Australia introduced a social sustainability initiative for doing good to the people as well as the community. The company even promoted community relations through arrangements of charities, donations and also by holding public sports events (Lodhia and Hess 2014). The people within the community thought it to be hypocritical, because of which, they believed that the company has been doing these things for own benefits and to gain a bigger market share. The social media page managed by the company was flooded with complaints and negative comments, due to which, the company withdrew itself from the campaign and even closed the social media page to prevent further negativities (Mikes and Kaplan 2014). It has been found that often the employees of the organisation, when asked about the cause of such issues and risks, remained bias in their responses while dealing with the conflicts.
Four Paradigms
As stated by Rotil? (2017), the radical structuralism paradigm represents the various macro components within the society including the social class or race that are responsible for making people prioritize on the objective reality related to societal structures. It has also allowed the companies to guide the subjective as well as transformative practices of radical humanism, which can enable change positively and at the same time, ensure positive structural and societal changes too (Rotil? 2017)
Risk management framework during the stage of planning
Considering the case study revolving around Evolution Mining in Australia, it is to be believed that the company has been termed as hypocritical in their aims and objectives and also for the sake of gaining a bigger market share along with generation of higher level of income in business. Due to the sudden criticism all over the social networks and the complaints made by people all over, the company was unable to respond to this so called vitriolic attack, which also damaged the brand reputation within the mining industry of Australia. Moreover, the company states that it aimed at implementing a social sustainability initiative for remaining sustainable and at the same time, make good amount of money though considering management of various business functions and processes to establish relationships with the community as well as contribute to the various community actions including the charities, donations, funding arrangements, public sporting events, etc (Bahn 2013). I have been assigned with the task of conducting a study on the campaign undertaken by the organisation and thereby, understand why the campaign failed, because of which, lots of criticisms have been circulating all around.
The risk management framework or RMF has been designed to develop a structured process, which can allow Evolution Mining in Australia to identify the potential threats as well as the weaknesses that might be the cause of such failure, furthermore, ensure formulation of relevant strategies required to minimise the impact of these risks and monitor its effectiveness too. The RMF could not only allow the mining company to analyse the issues and challenges, but would also enable defining the various actions and evaluate the necessary outcomes and results on the basis of the plan implemented (Prno 2013). The Integrated risk management enables conducting the various risk management procedures at various levels of the organisation and ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives effectively. The risk management framework also could allow the company to integrate the risk management processes in the governance structure of the organisation, strategic planning procedure, reporting procedures, policies, principles, values and corporate culture, which can assist in understanding and resolving the issues and risks much more comprehensively (Yakovleva 2017).
Risk Management Framework During the Stage of Planning
During the communicate and consultation stage, Evolution Mining staffs managed to communicate with each other for the purpose of identifying the issue or problem and also made sure to gain an idea about why the customers’ complaints have kept on increasing and why this vitriolic attack has been a sudden thing that’s difficult to respond to for the company. This has though been done with the communication process managed at different levels of the organisation including the levels of ENC, EMPR and the EAO. The establishment of context is sequential in nature, which allows for determining the risk assessment scope, thereby, manage collaboration of the EMPR, ENV AND EAO at the strategic level of the mining company to ensure regulatory compliance and fulfilment of legal obligations too (Adiansyah et al. 2017).
The identification of risks is another sequential process that enables determining the impacts of these risks, thereby check why the campaign has failed or been delayed according to the Mining C&E strategic plan. Moreover, the analysis of risks could be beneficial for determining the likelihood and potential impacts of the risks based on the severity with the use of ratings provided. This would enable determining the risks based on the priority, thereby, determine the actual cause of the issue and allow the company to resolve the issues effectively too. The mitigation strategies are developed then, which could make the company undertake sustainable approaches so as to become socially responsible and also contribute to the wellbeing of the society for creating positive mind sets among the clients (Mzembe and Meaton 2014). Continuous monitoring and review would also assist in promoting better communication as well as manage risk identification and management with much ease and efficiency too.
According to Küçükalp (2017), the Neohumanism approach to philosophy has to be applied as an universal philosophy where individual as well as collective progresses are influenced. This kind of philosophy does not include any intentions or desires associated with the grouping of employees, due to which, employees could feel free to share their individual ideas, opinions and responses without consulting with others and even without any bias (Küçükalp 2017). This kind of philosophy is based on the physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of people, and thus it is necessary for the employees to provide their useful views and opinions for resolving the issue and at the same time, ensure positive decision making within the organisation too. As stated by Bhattacharyya, Organisciak and Downie (2015), it is also believed that the neohumanism philosophy has fostered the behaviours of various stakeholders including the employees and allowed them to follow the rational discourse of applying positivism without any kind of social pressure put by others to change his or her opinion regarding the issue experienced at the mining company in Australia (Bhattacharyya, Organisciak and Downie 2015).
Neohumanism Approach to Philosophy
The radical structuralism philosophy, as stated by Srivastava (2014), can also be considered as a good conflict based perspective that can allow for identification of social hierarchies along with the lack of resources, both human and financial and also the relationship between the people working for the organisation. Considering the case study, it is to be believed that the radical structuralism denotes the relationship between the organisation and its customers (Srivastava 2014). As a large number of people already made complaints against the organisation regarding the focus on making money and attaining higher market share, due to which, the company has been termed as hypocritical too. On the contrary, Leggett (2013), also argued that, the company must aim at establishing good relationships with the customers and thus keep the employees trained, so as to facilitate the marketing approaches and ensure spreading awareness among people much comprehensively with the management of social media page. The radical structuralism promotes a better understanding of relationship between the business and its customers and thus to become sustainable within the competitive marketplace, Evolution Mining company should aim at managing social sustainability initiatives for contributing to the schools and community by raising funds through charities, donations and by holding public sporting events to (Leggett 2013).
On the basis of analysing these two philosophies or paradigms as conflict based perspectives, the radical structuralism perspective could be used as part of the marketing campaign for spread awareness among people as well as influence more people to make purchase of services from the organisation. As Evolution Mining Company failed while managing the marketing campaign, so it is essential to make sure that the radical structuralism perspective is integrated with the marketing campaign for facilitating the exposure of products and services, thereby ensure influence on the buying behaviours of customers (Lehmann 2013). The radical structuralism use represents inclusion of various concepts related to brand equity and marketing which can allow for determining how effective the margin between the business and its customers has been synthesized. Kioupkiolis and Katsambekis (2016) argued that this perspective enables studying the organisation based on the fundamental changes and to ensure that the rules and regulations are less judgmental and critical. For example, the poor level of motivation among the customers’ services employees represent that it has been ignored or rather have been integrated in the department of marketing so that the employees can deal with such complex issues much effectively and handle challenging jobs too (Kioupkiolis and Katsambekis 2016).
Seuring and Gold (2013), on the other hand, stated that the use of radical structuralism against the marketing campaign could identify the structural conflicts that might have arisen within the society, thereby, put pressure on the company to implement constant change through political and economic crises. Just as seen from the case study, a huge numbers of complaints were made by people within the society and these were represented as negative comments and feedbacks on the social media page managed by the Evolution Mining Company in Australia. The social sustainability approaches and aim to gain more income, though with the management of charities, funding and sports events, were questioned, which also created a negative image and brand reputation. The radical structuralism, according to Kioupkiolis and Katsambekis (2016), should enable the company to make necessary changes and deal with these complexities and issues by integrating the sustainable bus8ness functions and processes in the marketing activities undertaken by the company.
As it already known to everyone that the mining industry consists of multiple strengths , which include following the sustainability rules, regulations and guidelines, but also to ensure playing an active role in the management of change. With the focus on environmental protection nowadays along with the health and safety of workers, it is of utmost important for the mining companies to adapt to the sustainable measures integrated with the marketing strategies and approaches for meeting the needs of clients, become social responsible and also create a better and sustainable environment (Starik and Kanashiro 2013).
Set of questions asked by the project teams
The set of questions are as follows:
- How the organisation can aim at managing sustainable business considering the complaints already made by the public members?
- How the sustainability approaches and initiatives associated with the protection of environment and developing a healthy community have been favoured by the company?
- How does community relations been managed by the organisation by committing towards sustainable measures?
- Why does the marketing approaches responsible for spreading awareness among the political divide and public considering the social sustainability initiative undertaken?
According to Seuring and Gold (2013), within the mining industry, the companies, nowadays, have prioritised on the protection of environment and creating safety for the workers too. Evolution Mining could adopt new sustainability initiatives such as by implementing greener approaches to marketing in the manufacturing and production processes for ensuring that the costs are reduced along with meeting the needs of people within the community easily (Seuring and Gold 2013). Lodhia and Hess (2014) also argued that at present, commitment to the reduction of carbon dioxide has been a major aspect and thus the companies need to support the systems and site equipment by using battery driven equipment rather than using diesel fumes. Within the mining industry, to manage sustainability, the company needs to reduce the rebound while spraying the concrete and this could be possible with the use of Normet equipment instead of using the normal equipment with the involvement of right operators, the rebound could also be reduced to a level below 10 percent. This should be a great approach to protect the environment by reducing the level of dust created, furthermore create a positive impact on the overall productivity at Evolution Mining Company in Australia. Franks and Vanclay (21013) also added to his statement that the mining companies must take the sustainability aspect on a serious note, thereby, realise that it has been largely connected to the overall production level, which could improve the economics and profit level to be attained by the business as well. The sustainable approaches must be at the heart of the business operations, which could maintain economic viability and at the same time, allow the company to become socially as well as environmentally responsible by creating positive mind sets among the members of the public (Franks and Vanclay 2013).
The company could also enhance the marketing by promoting pictures and videos about cleaning the stagnant mine water with the use of Virtual Curtain, which should reduce the water pollution level and manage the waste water effectively too. Moreover, taking part in various social responsible campaigns could make more people such as the shareholders to make investments on the company. Evolution Mining should then foster innovation and creativity by opening new scopes for the poor children to learn, while the company should arrange funding activities and charities for ensuring contribution to the society and create positive mind-sets through management of social responsibilities towards the people perfectly (Caron et al. 2013).
Conclusion
The report was prepared to demonstrate how a large numbers of complaints were made by the public memebrs and also by the political divide regarding the mining company’s approach to making money and for gaining bigger market share. The company contributed to the community benefits and to deal with the complexities, the neo-humanism and radical structuralism philosophies were considered to ensure managing sustainable behaviours and become socially responsible too effectively.
