Yellow Color Symbolism in Nature and Life
The video of A winged victory for the Sullen portrayed the various colours of nature and symbolises those colours with the various stages of life of a person (Nemad, 2014). After watching the video again and again, I have found that bright yellow and blue are the two colours on which the maker of the video has focused. There have been many instances when these two colours have been highlighted by the artist in order to show a contrast of the creation and the demolition of life or any event of life. A detailed discussion based on the narration of the story using these two colors will be carried out in this analysis. A colourful creative piece of art helps in bringing out the inertia of depression and self-expression and help in finding the real meaning behind the changes and the real life happenings in one’s life. An artist can combine a series of regular activities and can give the touch of colors in it in order to highlight the ups and down of life and how spontaneous life can actually be. It is based on the creativity of the artist that the meaning of life can be understood that would be represented with the help of colors (Nemad, 2014).
A Winged Victory for the Sullen has been created with collaboration between the Stars of the Lid’s Adam Wiltzie and Dustin Halloran, the pianist. The creativity of explaining the various instances of life by using colours of natures and accompanying it with a superb musical tune has created a lively experience for the viewers to understand the anomaly of life and the changes that can arrive at a person’s life at any point of time. As stated by Pastoureau (2017) the very beautiful nature of nature consisting of the creation Sun, lake, river, pond, birds of different kinds and the life activities that include love and emotion have been nicely portrayed in the video. The combination of colours used in the video easily gets combined with the next frame and then it starts a new chapter of life or another story. The purpose of life that includes the happiness as well as the melancholy has been highlighted in the video.
In the view point of Cowan (2015), the yellow color signifies a wide range of meanings in the lives associated with nature. Yellow is considered as the color of hope as this color is related to the sunshine and happiness. This color has the virtue of bringing freshness, happiness, positivity, freshness and others. Again, Hung (2015) commented that yellow can also be considered as a symbol of honour and intelligence that would optimise the loyalty and the joyful action of a person. All these positive energies are symbolised by the bright yellow color. The natural phenomenon where we can find this yellow color act as a symbol of life and refreshment and it gives another chance of hope and survival (Hung, 2015). However, a dull yellow color represents the cowardice and deceit of a person or a situation that can results in loss of confidence of the person and can defeat the person. The bright yellow brings the essence of warmth and cheerfulness that results in activating the mental activities and enhance the vision of an individual (Zhang, 2015). This will eventually help in building confidence and will stimulate the internal energy and bring out the best in a person.
Blue Color Symbolism in Nature and Life
As opined by Yu (2014), life is spontaneous and the changes in life can take place at any moment. Any person experiencing a moment of joy might have to face a moment of drastic change and will turn into a sorrow moment. The cheerful moments can be symbolised with the yellow color and the very next moment resulting in the depression or the decline of the life can be represented by blue. In addition to this Birren, (2016) showed his ability in understanding the naturally occurring colours of sky and ocean are blue that represents the depth and the stability of the nature as well as our lives. Blue is often considered as a symbol of loyalty and royal and it represents certain characteristics like trust, confidence, faith or truth. In fact, the heaven is also symbolised in the blue color. This color is also a representation of offering services to someone but it is completely opposite to other colors like red, orange or yellow that represents a warmth and caring nature (Birren, 2016). It is more a masculine color that represents the dignity, intelligence and the authority of a person. It can be highlighted in this respect that the above mentioned colours like the yellow and the blue have been critically analysed. However, there are various other colours included in the video that represents the different aspects of life and has dominantly helped to understand the very nature of life.
After watching the video, it has to be said that Wayne McGregor definitely has a great taste in understanding the beauty of nature and portraying the effect of nature on human life. In fact, the lives of the animals have also been portrayed in the video and animals or birds like swan or an insect like the butterflies have been symbolised in the video. It has been portrayed very delicately that how the demolition of a life can easily result in the creation of another. Reading Fang and Tong (2015), it has been noted that yellow color has been used to symbolise the creation and the advent of a new life, whereas the color blue has a tinge of melancholy and depression and is often considered as a symbol of cold and depression. The notes and tones used in the video have also bring out the elegance of art of the artist. The strings, piano and at times, the hollow occasional horn have created an in depth essence to signify the attitude of life. The depth of colour used in each and every sequence to separate one scene from the other is remarkable and this has made the video more narrative and can be easily comprehend by the viewer.
The video starts with the bright red colour of the morning that is followed by the bright yellow colour of the sunlight as the sun rises up and the day begins. This particular scene symbolises the birth of a person or a new day ahead that would bring out many opportunities in one’s life. The life begins with play in the lap of the nature and the nature has been showed with a bright colour of the mix of yellow and green. Along with play or with the good vibes of the human nature, situations will arise when one will have to face troubles and can fall down but then there will be someone to hold us (Nennad, 2014). The video shows that once we fall down, we can also get a chance of waking up and can get wings to fly. Here as well, it has been found that the two vital colours, the yellow and the blue have been used to personify or symbolise the each moment of life. The wheat field or the drops are also yellow and it is the source of energy just like the sun as it gives the light to the world and helps to grow the crops for sustaining life (Nennad, 2014). When the woman was disturbed by a man, it was shown that the woman was wearing a blue cloth that is again a symbolic element of negativity. However, the woman was saved and it was shown that a boy or a carer of the woman was there to project the human or to keep an eye on the person. This was again showed in a bright orange colour that portrays a clear image that there is hope alive and the evil part can be overcome easily.
Use of Colors to Highlight the Changes in Life
In the next part, it is seen that a lady has been running from the woods that is also covered with greens with a hope that there is someone who is waiting for her and rather she can be the one for whom someone is waiting (Nennad, 2014). It is only after a long run, it has been found that the girl meets her soul mate with whom she can plan to live happily ever after. However, in this scene it is seen that the girl is wearing a blue dress and is rather looking for positivity all around her. Yellow the colour of fire also gives warmth and affection and helps us to overcome the challenges that we face during the cold nights. Again, as commented by Faridul et al., (2016), that the cold or the ice are often symbolised as blue that is overcome by the warmth of the fire. Thus, it can be said that with every situation tat results in the darkness or the negativity in the life of a person, the warmth or the yellow substances are always there to overcome the issue. Thus, yellow symbolises the colour of hope and appreciation.
As it has been seen that the video represents a yellow field that has all the grains and crops that would give lives to the people and at the same time, it looks like a deep blue ocean that would grasp anyone in it on a stormy or a violent night. All these aspects are the part of the nature and these have been represented by the means of various colours, but yellow and blue hold the most prominent place and has symbolised the very changing nature of nature (Wolski, Grafton & Isenegger, 2017). The life on earth is completely in the hand of mother-nature and she can bring out the creation or the demolition of an individual at any point of time. At the end of the video it has been found that two swans that are considered as the symbol of love are also swimming over the blue water but there arise a chance when the swans have to leave their soul and bid adieu to the nature and the world. This is again a situation when certain sadness appears (Fang & Tong, 2015). However, it has to be understood that we have to continue with our lives in this way only and there will be ups and down but as there will be negativity, it will be accompanied by positive energy as well. This is how the creation has been done and the nature is showing us the way.
With the detailed discussion on the artistic talent of representing the various instances of life using the various colour palettes, it can be said that the artist has tried making a spontaneous collage of the everyday activities that undermines all the aspects of the unconscious mind and how it can be healed emotionally. The collage has been accepted as both the negative and the positive sides of the human life have been portrayed in the video. Thus, it can be said that the artist has given an identical touch of life of the activities that we do or we go through. The creative creation has been watched, heard and felt and this has given the right opportunity to understand the power of nature and its integrity with our day to day life activities. The depth of colours and the lines used to distinguish each element with the other has given a tremendous experience of changing nature and how impactful it can be on our lives. The video has given the opportunity to understand the changing nature of the world and along with it the role of human at different stages. The analysis will definitely help to understand the various situations in life and I would be able to resemble any changes in life with the colours. The depth and understanding of the colour palettes has given a wide insight towards the life and its major instances.
