In the discussion section of the paper, it will review and analyse the GRI principles and standard reporting concepts thereby focusing on the externalities created by the ecommerce companies of Hong Kong (Zarra et al., 2019). The selected retail business for this paper is eBay 0and Alibaba. It is a vital action that is necessary for the companies to adopt on the reporting principles if it wants to claim the factors of sustainability.
The standard reporting concept comprise of the factors of stakeholder inclusiveness, sustainability context, completeness and materiality.
Alibaba is a Chinese e-commerce corporation and is also the creation’s main digital connected trade platform. With reference to the stakeholder inclusiveness, it can be analysed that Alibaba has maintained a diversified portfolio as it had remained to be the first Chinese e-commerce platform. The stakeholders of the company had invested in major e-commerce as well as in the retail segment so that they can link the e-commerce business (Neto, Bloemhof & Corbett, 2016). It is further concerned with the people who are combating with poverty. As on December 2017, the company had announced to help RMB10 billion Poverty Relief Taobao Program. However, the aim of the program is to improve the rural education, boasting the e-commerce, providing healthcare services and empowering the women. On the other hand, eBay conducts a responsible business which usually ranges from transparency and trust so that they can boost the social awareness. The shareholders of the business had further invested in the emerging market and made it an AI where they can improve the customer purchasing experience (Burke & Eaton, 2016). The expansion process had led to large investment in Africa, Russia and Latin America.
On the other hand, the social sustainability of Alibaba emphasizes on certain factors and they are recruiting and retaining the best talent as well as foster a see-through work setting through a stress on statement and contribution of work environment. It also empowers the women at workplace, encouraging diversity and also supporting the women entrepreneurship (Feng et al., 2021). As one June 30, 2018, Alibaba suggestions the staffs with recompence and inexpensive benefit. It further invests on recruiting the engineers with specialization in AI, cloud computing, digital media and logistics. Similarly, with reference to the opportunity for all the merchants from low-income countries and leverage the interest to connect with the global economy and grow their business. There are more than 10 million business that is dependent on Alibaba’s retail marketplace platform. On the other hand, with reference to eBay it can be stated that the externalities are initiated by Suppliers Code of Conduct and Ethics (Silva, 2016). Considering the factor of reliability, Alibaba had launched its green packaging program, which encourages the bio-degradable bags, package recycling bins and tape-free boxes. It had included optimization algorithm which enables to reduces the consumption with an appropriate 15%. With the help of this technology Alibaba is able to deliver more than 250 million cases along with the courier bags in its financial year ending March 2018. eBay factor of reliability can be measured with the factors of forming green economy and aiming for making 100% renewable energy procurement. There are a number of energy efficiency practices which work saving energy, reducing waste and including green building regulations.
Hence, it can be concluded that Alibaba and eBay can enhance the job by making their sustainability efforts transparent by means of launching different sustainable program we=here the respective company can provide with more attention and should evaluate the performance through different performance (Villarroel et al., 2016). However, in these situations a formulation of sustainable development strategy, providing enhanced training services for both the consumers and sellers. These organisations can also consider the implementation of a maintainable expansion process of pointer organization in the upcoming. Furthermore, it can aim to achieve the pay parity as it can represent its key step of assisting the women section of the society towards providing them with employment and ensuring a good sustainability practice.
