The leadership style which is followed by me is democratic. This specific style of leadership mainly states that final decision about the organizational processes will be made by the leaders or managers. The leaders will however take the opinions that are provided by the employees based on different parts of the decision. The opinions that are taken from the employees help in increasing the levels of creativity in the organization in an effective manner. The different principles that are thereby followed by the democratic style of leadership mainly include, self-determination, inclusiveness, equal participation and deliberation. The most important features that are able to characterize the democratic style of leadership are based on, the empowerment of group members, distribution of responsibilities and providing aid to the decisions that are ultimately made (Hendriks & Karsten, 2014).
Three strengths of the leadership practice
- I am able to involve the employees in the process of decision making with respect to the different organizational operations. This helps me operate in a collaborative way.
- I am also capable of gaining the ideas and the opinions that are provided by the subordinates which helps in forming the solutions to complex issues.
- The teams which are built by me are quite strong in nature and help in the achievement of the objectives and goals (Iqbal, Anwar & Haider, 2015).
Three weaknesses of the leadership practice
- The leadership style that is followed by me sometimes becomes quite indecisive in nature in the emergency situations. The authoritative role is not appropriately created with the help of this style of leadership.
- My decision making process also tends to become more time consuming in nature as I tend to consult the employees who work under me before taking ant final step.
- I have to also become apologetic to my subordinates for the non-implementation of the opinions and ideas which are offered by them (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014).
Recommendation of the ways of improving my leadership style
- The time that I take to make the final decision needs to be reduced so that the organizational processes can be maintained in an effective manner.
- I need to increase my authoritative nature so that I am able to provide the appropriate instructions to the employees.
- I need to provide the information to employees that the opinions that are provided by them cannot be implemented always. I thereby need to create specific types of teams for the specific decisions.
Two short-term SMART goals to improve the leadership practice
The SMART goals that are created by an individual are based on the five different factors which include, Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound. The two SMART goals that I wish to set for the improvement of my leadership style are as follows,
S – Specific – Reduction of the time which is taken to take decisions. |
M – Measurable – This can help in the enhancement of the efficiency of the company. |
A – Achievable – The goal will be achieved with the assistance that is provided by the management. |
R – Relevant – Creation of a crisis management team for the organization is important. |
T – Time bound – The time limit which has been set for the achievement of the objective is 6 months. |
S – Smart – Making the teams consisting of employees who have similar sets of skills. |
M- Measurable – This can help in improving the speed of the decision-making process. |
A – Achievable – The objective can be achieved with the assistance of HR department. |
R – Relevant – This can help in the reduction conflicts at the time of decision-making. |
T – Time bound – The time limit which has been selected for this goal is around 3 months. |
The action that needs to be taken for the achievement of the SMART objectives is based on the formation of a crisis team which can act at times of pressure based situations in an effective manner. The team will be provided with the responsibility to act promptly when the crisis occurs in the organizational operations.
The next action which can be implemented is based on the formation of specific types of groups which include people with the similar types of skills. The though process of the employees in these groups also needs to be similar in nature. The particular group will be consulted when an issue occurs within the organization. The decisions will then be taken with respect to the solutions that need to be provided to specific types of situations. This will be helpful in the reduction of the time which is taken for the decision making based activities in the company.
