Issues in the First Episode
Talk shows are a show where in issues, concerns and topics are discussed by involving the number of participants so that opinion can be derived from a topic or discussion. It can be a television or radio (Shattuc, 2014). Usually, it consists of a group of individuals who have the experience in relation to whatever the discussion is going to happen. It can take calls from caller listening from home, or anywhere else (Thornborrow, 2014). The host in the show is one of the keys for any successful show. The host binds the audience in such a manner that viewers are ready and early waiting for the show to be air (Hilliard & Keith, 2016). Topics in the show should relate to the audience so that the audience should feel that it is for them only (Ames, 2016). In the below context, the two episodes of Sports Radio talk show will be analyzed and will try to find out in details of the issues and solutions that how it can become better than it was.
The host was discussing the teams, which played soccer. Especially for women soccer team who was at winning streak at last four games and continue to do so consecutively in the next two games also. They beat their opponents with margins with good defense technique that help them to gain success. The turnover of the ball was not having in the game, which leads to a couple of issues (CKUW, 2018). The performance of the team was good but can be better due to certain player’s; margin of winning can be improved. The major problem was not involving the audience, which can give a broader picture.
No voice modulation
Modulation is when, any individual control or adjusts his tone or pace accordingly to the situation so that situation becomes more dramatic and mysterious. By voice, modulation Anchor can have the command over others. While delivering the speech or spoken words pitch plays a curtailed role in attracting the viewer
No audience
Only two hosts were discussing, the issues, concerns, and they were not even bothered to involve and take participants from the audiences. All the opinions and discussions were having on the base of two members only. They picked their favorite team and discussing the same.
Communication Skills
Although the communication skills of the host were good but are was not having depth in it, at a time certain words were not clear and precise. All the words coming from their mouth should be crystal clear.
Issues in the Second Episode
Background noise
Two times, there was a disturbance of room door opening up. It has created disturbance in between the conversation.
Knowledgeable & Passionate
The host had the information of the matches, which are going, and for the future but they were not having ample amount of information, which they should have before starting the show. As the show was about to over and hosts were out of the topic for discussion.
The host has started the program with a warm welcome by introducing his name and the name of the guest. They started with the few recaps of the last episode that they have discussed. They have started with the game of Westman women soccer team to start off. At the two games, their one was against Calgary, which did not turn out so well, and the second game was against the Lethbridge, which came with the result of one draw. The host did not remember the exact day, as he was confused. They have discussed the performance of Emma Parker, as she was Westman women athlete of the week from women’s volleyball. They were appreciating the performance of Emma Parker and Alberta. The discussion was made as the team player how it went; the better touchdown can give better results. The defense of the team made them strong. The team of Minnesota did not perform well from starting. Certain teams were at winning streak and some of them were not (CKUW, 2018).
The host was not prepared enough as in starting of the show. He fumbled and was not what was on the show. The starting conversation was little wired.
Not clear with the points
In between the conversation, the host was not clear with the points even though proper preparation was not made, at the point when he was discussing the game of soccer, the date of the event was not mentioned in the list that he had that is why he was confused in the days of the event.
Lack of knowledge
In the whole conversation, it was found that the host has a lack of knowledge about the events of sports. The host should have a full knowledge about the event that they discussed in the program, but when Brad was discussing with Mark, it was found that he has a lack of knowledge about the event that they were discussing.
Proper Modulation of voice while speaking with it.
Solutions to Improve the Show
The host can improve their whole conversation by concentrating on the modulation of voice while speaking on the radio. He can control over their pace of voice and the pitch, which may help the host to set proper modulation of voice while speaking with it (Shank & Lyberger, 2014).
Audience support and opinions
The discussion should not be between two people only. They can make the program more interesting by including the audience in the discussion because every individual has different views. It will make the discussion healthier (Thaler & Ganser, 2015).
Effective Communication skill
In the conversation of both episodes, the communication skill was good, but at a certain point, the voice was not clear, which created a disturbance in between the conversation. Therefore, the host should concentrate on the voice while speaking and use the microphone at a specific distance, the voice would more clearly. Try to be clear with the points, which help the audience to understand appropriately (Jowett & O’donnell, 2014).
No more extra noise
In between the conversation, the management of the host program should manage the extra noise which may interrupt the whole conversation. The program should be held in the silence area, which helps in preventing the extra noise that came in the first episode of the programme (Newman, Peck & Wilhide, 2017).
Proper knowledge
The host should have a proper knowledge about the topic they will discuss in the program. It will showcase the confidence of the host and audience will get attract more if the host has full knowledge about the topic they discuss in the program
Proper preparation
Before starting of the program, the host should have done proper preparation of the topic that they will discuss in the program. The host should have full information about the topic. In the second episode, the host did not remember the day and date of the sporting event, that made the conversation less effective. Therefore, the host should keep this thing in his mind before handling any program (Wang & Zhou, 2015)
Conclusion
From the above, it can be concluded that the talk show is the platform, where the individual discusses the issue or concern about the particular topic. In the sports talk program, the individuals who have an experience in relation to the sports, the discussion is going to happen. In the whole program, the host plays a prominent role because the host binds the audience which makes the program more successful. One of the episodes was held in which, the host was Mr. Brad. And the guest was Mr. Mark. They both were having a healthy conversation about sports. They have discussed the soccer, volleyball and so on. But in the whole conversation, they were lacking in some points such as lack of knowledge, extra noise and so on. Therefore, it is recommended that host should try to make healthy conversation by concentrating on some points such as control over pitch, clear voice, and proper information about the topic and so on. These will help the audience to understand more appropriately and effectively.
