In the early 1800s President Andrew Jackson gave a speech about how Native Americans should give up their land for the Whites and move somewhere else like in a reservation. But at the same time the Native Americans are saying that no one shouldn’t be sold or owned by anyone, it should be shared and refuse to move out.
In 1829 President Andrew Jackson who represents the White men gave a speech about the removal of Native Americans from their land.
While in the early 1800s a Shawnee tribe member named Tecumseh made a speech about they will never give up their land to anyone or anything.
Andrew Jackson is saying that the Native Americans are nomadic meaning they move from place to place instead of staying permanently, because in the speech he said “Toward the aborigines of the country no one can indulge can indulge a more friendly feeling than myself, or would go further in attempting to reclaim them from their wandering habits.
” Meaning Jackson wants to remove the Indians from their land in a more “friendly” way.
On the other hand Tecumseh said that land shouldn’t be sold to anyone is should be shared because in his speech he said “as it was first, should be now-for it was never divided in the first place, but belongs to us all”. Now I agree with Tecumseh land was never owned by anyone and it should stay that way because it was never divided by the whites or Native Americans.
They were forced to give up the land and if they didn’t there were harsh consequences.
I don’t agree at all with Andrew Jackson because in his speech he says “under protection of the government and through the influence of good counsels, to cast off their savage community.” Meaning that Andrew Jackson and the government not only wants their land but they want to change the Native Americans into something they are not. But not only is he changing the Natives but he is trying to sell their land for money because in the speech he said “toward the aborigines of the country no one can indulge a more friendly feeling than myself, or would go further on attempting to reclaim them from their wandering habits and make them a happy, prosperous people.”
Now with Tecumseh I agree that land should be sold to anyone what so ever because in his speech he’s comparing his country to the air because to him the land is very important and means a lot to him, but not only him but other Indians as well. In Tecumseh’s speech he says “sell a country! Why not sell the air?” meaning nothing should be owned by anyone not the people, the land or air in that matter it shouldn’t be owned to anyone.
Also, another reason why I don’t agree with Andrew Jackson because in his speech he said “It gives me pleasure to announce to congress that the benevolent policy of the government, steadily pursued for nearly thirty years, in relation to the removal of the Indians.” Meaning he’s enjoys removing the Native Americans away from their home and land but getting money for doing so. Andrew Jackson took so many things from the Indians which mainly was taking their land and selling it to give the white people more places to live.
In conclusion these are the reasons why I agree with Tecumseh instead of Andrew Jackson because he wanted to rid the Natives from their land and change the way they wanted the Natives to live like the white people. But overall I agree with Tecumseh about not giving up their land for any reason what so ever because both Andrew Jackson and Tecumseh wanted to use their land for many reasons. Andrew Jackson just removed the Indians out of their land in a selfish way and Tecumseh on the other hand wanting the use of their land for unselfish reasons like both Indians and white people should live in the same land peacefully.
