When considering volunteering within a charity, then even though you will be thinking of the charity and what the charity will gain from having you there, there are also many things that you can gain by working for this charity. This is because if we use the example you have just come out of school and you have never had a job and you need to find one, then the different life skills that you can learn from volunteering in an organisation will be a good way to help you get a job, and also provide working experience.
Gain New Life Skills So when you are volunteering in an organisation this may mean that you can gain new life skills. Gaining new life skills can be a very vital part to getting a job. This is because employers are looking for different skills that people have gained throughout there life and because everyone seems to have all the same qualifications at the moment, so having good life skills could be the decider between you getting the job and the other person.
Practical Skills – These are skills that you can gain from the organisation and what the teach you. So for example if you are volunteering at the Red Cross then this may mean that you will be qualified in first aid and this is a very good life skill to have. First aid is often requested at most jobs and most of them will send you on training to do it, but if you already have the skill then you will not have to do this and this will impress potential employers.
Communication Skills – There are many different ways that you can use communication skills to your advantage. So if you are working for a charity that uses sign for certain people because they are deaf, then you are going to pick up part of the sign language and this means that you are going to look good when you apply for a job, and if you are apply for a job in the police or something like that then this is going to be a good skill to have because of the fact that the police need more people who can sign and speak different language.
Confidence – When volunteering for charities you may come out of your shell a lot more and gain a lot of confidence. This is good for when you attend job interviews because of the fact that if you have no confidence in yourself at a job interview then most properly the employer won’t have any confidence in you either. But if you have the confidence in that interview then the employer may think that you are going to be confident in what you are doing and this means that you may be more likely to get the job from someone who is not too sure of themselves.
Team Work – Team work is a very important skill to have and it means that you will be able to work well in a workplace when you get a job in the future. This means that if you are good working within a team then people are going to want to employee you. Diversity awareness – This means that you will be able to meet new people and you are going to get to know people a lot better. This is good because if you have to meet people with different cultures and beliefs then you are going to be able to get to know the different cultures and get a better knowledge of them.
This can be very important if you want to work within a company or business that deals with different cultures because you can then write this on your CV. Improve you CV – When you are in the younger generation having a good CV means everything. You need to have a good CV to get a job anywhere at the moment. But if you had a really good CV with the same qualifications as someone else and you were both going for the same job then you having volunteered in a charity organisation will mean that you are ahead of the other person and this may be the decision between who gets the job.
Also some of the organisations actually offer real qualifications and this may means that you will get more chance of getting a good job. Develop existing – If you already have exiting skills such as team working skills, or first aid skills you may be able to develop the skills that you already have when working within a charity. This is because when you are doing something all the time it starts getting into your head, and this means that you will be able to get into the role of being able to do the skills within the job.
