Duties emphasized by Deborah and Wayne
Discuss about the Business Ethics for Ethical Decision Making and Cases.
This report is mainly aimed to discuss and conduct a research on the ethical philosophy as well as on the application the ethical philosophy in an IT workplace environment. Therefore, this report discusses the aggressiveness of the bid in the project, “Operation Safe skies” including the ethical consequences associated with the project execution. Thus, in this context, this report illustrates the principles of the ACS codes of professional conducts and the application of the ACS Code Requirements. Moreover, this report also enlightens the resolution techniques of the ethical dilemmas.
Defence on Ethical Ground and Potential Consequences while accepting the aggressive bid
Occidental Engineers had bid in a very aggressive manner for the actual contract. This organization had the bid less than it would take for doing properly the work. Due to the shaky financial condition, this company was not willing to take a loss in the project (Burmeister, 2012). Thus, the project has been understaffed as well as underfunded. On the other hand, the employees working on the project have given a heroic effort by working eighteen hour days seven days a week in terms of meeting the deadline of the project. Therefore, this aggressiveness of the bid involves few consequences in the ethical aspect. These are as follows:
- First consequence of such aggressiveness of the bid would come out from the employee side. Due to such huge work pressure, the employees can face some health issues (Bowern et al., 2016).
- On the other hand, such aggressiveness of the bid would also hamper the success of this project. As the software testing has not been performed after the completion of the project, thus, if the client faces any failure while running the software then it would ultimately result in the loss of the company.
Most importantly, due to such aggressiveness the employees who are working in this project would suffer the most (Landman et al., 2012). On the other hand, the company as a whole would suffer the most by losing the competition with their competitor companies if errors or failures would be found as the test engineer has taken the decision not to perform testing after completing the entire due to the short timeline.
The manager of this project should have few major responsibilities to this project 3 days before the delivery of the project is due. These are as follows:
- The project manager, Deborah Shepherd has to fix a particular activity schedule in order to deliver the project within the due deadline (Aroskar, 2013). This is because, during such crucial time, it is very important to make plans as well as schedules regarding the activities as per the timeline.
- On the other hand, most importantly, the prime responsibility of the project manager of this project is for ensuring proper delivery of the project with the high quality level as well as on time.
- The project manager should prepare the documentation of the requirements of the clients as well as translating them into the specifications of the design.
- He should also prepare work and time estimate for the project.
- Project manager should focus on the fact whether project testing is being performed or not. Project testing is also very important because, the bugs found after the delivery of the project would not make the client happy.
The test engineer, Wayne Davidson should have major responsibilities to this project 3 days before the delivery of the project is due. These are as follows:
- The test engineer should become familiar with the software under test of the project.
- He should understand the project plan or the master test plan (Trevino, 2014).
- He should also create or procure data for testing necessary for the project testing.
- The test engineer should also report the defects before the delivery of the project to the client
- He should also report the results of the test to the stakeholders as well as reply to the returned reports of bugs.
Being a member of Australian computer Society, the project manager as well as the test engineer of this software development project should have to advance as well as uphold the effectiveness, dignity as well as the honour of being a professional (Jones, 2012). It entails in regards to acting within the law as well as being a good citizen, the conformance of the test engineer and the project manager to the following values of Australian Computer Society. These are as follows:
- The primacy aspect of the public interest or prioritizing the public interest – employees would place the public interests on those of the sectional, business or the personal interests (Ferrell & Gresham, 2015).
- The life quality enhancement – employees should strive for enhancing the life quality of those affected by the work of the employees.
- Honesty – the employees should be honest in the skills of their representation, knowledge, products as well as services (Ford & Richardson, 2014).
- Competence – Employees would work diligently as well as competently for their stakeholders.
- Professional Development – employees of a particular enterprise should focus on enhancing their own professional development as well as that their staff.
- Professionalism – the employees would also need to increase the ACS integrity as well as the respect of its member for each other.
Application of the ACS Code Requirements
There are few specific codes among the ACS codes of professional conduct should be considered by the project manager and the test engineer as per the scenario of the case. These are as follows:
- Public Interest Primacy – In this current case of the project, “Operation Safe Skies”, Wayne and Deborah should consider this particular ACS code during the project completion (Ferrell & Fraedrich, 2015).
- Competence – Deborah and Wayne should follow this particular code of ACS professional conduct by working diligently and competently for their clients.
- Professional development – the project manager as well as the test engineer of this project should be aware of the professional development of the employees working in the project.
- Professionalism – the test engineer and the project manager should try to enhance the ACS integrity, as it is relevant to this current case.
The project manager and the test engineer of this project should apply the identified codes among the ACS codes of professional conduct in the above section while delivering this particular project (Leidner & Kayworth, 2016). The application of the ACS codes of Professional Conduct is needed in order to properly execute the project. Therefore, the test engineer as well as the project manager has to follow specific way out to apply the ACS code of professional conduct. These are as follows:
- Public Interest Primacy – In order to place the public interests, Deborah and Wayne have to focus on the business as well as employees who are giving huge effort to complete the project.
- Competence – In order to maintain the competency, the test engineer has to perform testing before the project delivery (Vance, Elie-Dit-Cosaque & Straub, 2015).
- Professional development – The project manager should focus on the professional development of the employees so that they can get motivation to complete the project
- Professionalism – the project manager and the test engineer have to understand the utility of the ACS integrity in order to build proper professionalism.
This report has identified few significant ethical consequences or ethical dilemmas in this particular project, “Operation Safe skies”. All of the ethical dilemmas associated with the project execution can simply affect the competitive advantage as well as the company reputation. Thus, the project manager and the test engineer have to follow few important resolution techniques in order to address the ethical consequences. These are as follows:
- Firstly, the project manager and the test engineer have to follow properly the ACS code of professional conduct.
- On the other hand, the test engineer of this particular project has to perform testing on the software developed after the completion of the project. He should not ignore testing for the short deadline of the project. He should at least apply the test strategy on the software, which is the most time efficient so that it can be determined whether there is any bug present in the project or not.
- The project manager should be concerned about the employee health, as they have committed to work for seven days in a week. The project manager should approach to the higher authority of the company so that the employees can get extra benefit for their hard work.
- Most importantly, the proper planning should always be prepared to execute an IT project in a proper way so that such consequences can be avoided.
Conclusion
This entire discussion has simply shed light on the ethical dilemmas those have been occurred while executing the project “Operation Safe skies”. However, this report has not only highlighted ethical dilemmas occurred at the time of the project execution but also has provided a clear view on the possible resolution techniques in order to address the ethical consequences of this project. These resolutions are simply based on the ACS code of professional conduct. Thus, it can be easily stated that if the test engineer and the project manager follow the resolutions, therefore, it would be easy for them to successfully execute this project.
