Body of the Report
The first robots were invented in the year 1954 and they are used to perform all the tasks that a human can do (Brady et al., 2012). These robots can be both autonomous and semi-autonomous that can be used in any industry. Robots are used in every field of business like- in dangerous environment such as bomb-detection and de-activation. Nilsson (2014) portrays that these are robots are also used in manufacturing process, car assembling departments and military purposes. In recent times, most of the business people are using this robotics concept as they can enhance their productivity. Michalski et al. (2013) also explains that robots can trek massive warehouses without getting tired and can be easily programmed for other job responsibilities. In addition to that, automation technology has significantly improved in recent years as it takes lesser maintenance cost.
This business report focuses on an Artificial Intelligence company named as “Business Intelligence” that intends to use artificial technology for attaining a competitive advantage. Their major target industries are- miming industry, transportation industry and manufacturing industry to which they desire to offer artificial intelligence services.
A programmable mechanical device also known as reprogrammable multifunctional manipulator that can interact with its business environment and can perform all the task according to the programs is referred to as robotics technology (Ingrand & Ghallab, 2014). In recent times, robotics technology is used for spot and electric arc welding, pick- and- place operations, assembling process and other purposed like assisting humans in malls and other places (Kanal & Kumar, (2012). The popularity of use of robotics has been increased due to their quality control inspections ability on various aspects of product’s creation, assembling, packaging and delivering. Ginsberg (2012) furthermore mentioned that this technology also gained popularity as they do not need regular training and other additional investment for their motivation and bonus. These machines can work throughout the day without getting tired and hampering the quality of the work.
In recent times, artificial intelligent technology has also formulated robots that can detect gases and other materials through cameras system that is implemented on them. Yampolskiy (2013) explains that this technology can be considered as revolutionary as these robots accomplished the investigation of oil and gas when scanning has to be performed in abandoned mines. Mineshafts robots are used in mining industry that is equipped with cameras and sensors to get feedback from underground. These robots are waterproof and can get down into 50 feet long.
These robots are designed for sent hundreds of feet down a mineshaft so that miners can easily detect the presence of oil wells. Ajwad and Iqbal (2014) on the other hand defines that a fiber-optic cable is used in such robots so that minimum distortion in the signals can occurred.
The area of manufacturing where robots can be used are- aerospace, chemical and plastic manufacturing, automotive manufacturing, glass and ceramic manufacturing, food stuffs and beverages manufacturing, printing and wood and furniture manufacturing (Ghahramani, 2015).
These robots are used especially in food and beverage industry for packaging and delivery on the loading trucks. Deisenroth et al. (2013) furthermore depicts that these robots are also used in other manufacturing units for delivering the final goods.
Overview of Robotics Technology
These robots are used in local convectional beverage stores or franchises for serving beer, coffee, milkshakes and other beverages. Minker (2012) furthermore explains that these robots are programmed for serving a particular amount of beverages every time. These small robots are also found in offices and road-sides.
These robots are used in all the industry that needs the help of putting force and pressure in manufacturing their company’s products. Zaidi and Sofian (2013) explains that these OccuBot provides maximum flexibility and precision, continuous adaptation, simple parameterization and efficient processes. These OccuBot identifies the forces and torques that is required to form aerospace seats and contact surfaces.
Kanal and Kumar (2012) highlighted that these robots are used for assembling the different car parts together to form the complete cars. This is also a revolution in automobile industry as it is difficult to lift heavy body parts of the cars and assemble them together. The assembly robots can be configured into three ways- six-axis articulated arms, four-axis “SCARA” robots and Delta robots.
It is also found that the artificial intelligence revenue by using artificial intelligence by the year 2025 is estimated as $37,000 million.
It is also said that in the coming years, this artificial intelligent technology will also improved in making improvement in speech and more personalization. Thus, it can also be said that providing the mining, tranpor5taqion and manufacturing industry, a series of customised robots will also enhance their business profitability (Zulaika, 2012). Computer programmers also have incorporate new customised programs that can be used for performing all the business functions of target industries. In the future, companies can also use artificial intelligence concepts like- Artificial Narrow Intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence and Artificial Super Intelligence. Thus, this can be also be used to ensure success in implementing robotics in business functions in near future (Yampolskiy, 2013). Thus, by using the above mentioned robotics technology, “Business Intelligence” can able to target the manufacturing industry and mining industry.
The first step regarding the implementation of the robotics technology or the artificial intelligence concepts in the organization is to hire people who are aware of this technology and are capable for formulating the robotics programs (Sigaud & Buffet, 2013). Thus, the human resource department must create vacant position for an artificial intelligent department. Robotics experts should assess these people so that the skills and competencies of the candidates can be ensured.
The second step is to automate the existing process and technology that is provided to the target customers. Bennett and Hauser (2013) in this context describes that this initiative towards applying automatic approach ensures that the company is capable of utilizing the benefits of AI in business. Moreover, the working personnel should also be provided training from the AI experts so that they can aware of the future technology and prepare themselves for developing programs for the same.
The third step is to choose a suitable strategy for implementing in the business. Shoham (2014) explains that in this step, the business must plan the products they desire to sell to the target companies. In this context, the employees should be assisted with the managers and experts of the organization so that the effectiveness of the strategy can be assured. In addition to that, developing these strategies should also ensure proper alignment of the target company’s goals. In this way, the target company can also get assurance that the products that they going to receive will fulfill their business requirements.
Different Types of Robots in Different Industries
The fourth step is to implement the plan and monitor the progress. Hunt (2012) furthermore depicts that businesspeople should practically implement the developed technology in the desired process. In this process, the experts should assess the progress of the technology and make proper amendment if the customers need some more specifications.
Thus, the strategic directions for the upcoming plan are:
To further, strengthen the existing technology with the concept of robotics and maintain the significance in the field of manufacturing and mining business operations. The company should have the mission to provide world class, customized services to their customers, meet the challenges and seize the opportunities for future development in the field of robotics.
To extend opportunities for individual professional development by providing them effective training from professional so that other field like transport industry, automobile industry and aerospace industry can also be targeted. Moreover, the company should also develop their vision for recruiting and retain a diverse, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multigenerational workforce.
- Hiring of right people
- Organize training for the skill development of employees
- Include recruitment, retention, and diversity management strategies
- To address the issues of the current business functionalities
Mid-term goals for the implementation process are (to be completed within 2-3 years):
- Identify the upcoming artificial intelligence technology that can be used in manufacturing and mining industry.
- Communicate more target industry for business profitability
Long-term goals for the implementation process are (to be completed within 4-5 year):
- Develop strategies that can align with the developed technology in the company
- Identification of the monetary capital for the incorporation of the desired technology
- Encourage practitioners to use the metrics available to them for using and developing technology
The social and legal considerations that this strategy should consider are to take care of the unemployment rates so that the human resource of the company cannot complain against the organizational policy according to the Employment Act 1988 (Employment Act 1988, 2017). Moreover, the developed robots should also do not harm and thus it is required to develop robots that are stable and does not create any adversity like explosions. Moreover, it is hence required to place these robots in isolated corners or in a safe place from where the working personnel in the organization mat not affected. Moreover, the technology should be used by not adopting any pirated technology according to the act of Gene Technology Act 2000 (Gene Technology Act 2000, 2017).
It is evident that the era of human efforts has been gone and all the work is accomplished through automation process. Pham (2012) describes that starting from the manufacturing to the delivery of the products. However, the benefits for which the organization should adopt the process of robotics are to improve the efficiency and enhance their productivity. In addition to that, one of the most important benefits of using robotics is to eliminate the erroneous business results. In some cases, human made error that results in business loss and this possibility is not present in the using robotics. Yampolskiy (2013) also portrays that using robotics in business become famous as it allows the organization to eliminate extra investment in offering rewards and training regarding a new business process to their employees at a regular interval of time. Implementation of the robotics also helps the organization to eliminate the cost for recruiting human resource in manufacturing process and transportation process. This moreover reduces the overall production time that furthermore allows the business to make more production in a equal span of time.
Mylopoulos and Brodie (2014) highlight that on one hand, the expense for maintaining the human resource can be eliminated but the incorporation of continuously changing technology in the developed robotic products need much more monetary investments. Thus, this is the only reason that new start-up companies do not want to implement RPA in their business. Moreover, Zulaika (2012) highlighted that lack of technical ability is another disadvantage of using robotics in robotic process automation. Thus, provision of the training regarding the modern technology to the programmers need must investment that results in lesser organizational profitability. Ghahramani (2015) highlight another disadvantage and that is the prime reason for the development of robotics is to assist the human in the business process but in recent time, business people opts for employee turnover so that maximum productivity can be ensured. This approach also have a disadvantage and that is any circuit faults or breakage in robots may results in stopping the business functionality of an entire day. Thus, relying only on the automation process will be dangerous for a business.
Mining Industry
Kanal and Kumar (2012) portray that the first risk that is associated with the robotics technology is disruption in environment. This disruption may cause for the high use of steel and iron material for developing robots. However, this risk can be overcome by recycling the scrap robots in formulation of new robotic system. In addition to that, another problem is the security risk that can be occurred by incorporating wrong programming in the robotic system. In this case, the robot may follow the asked process but in real the outcome may be devastating (Nilsson, 2014). Yampolskiy (2013) furthermore highlight the third adversity related to the technology and that this artificial intelligence cannot adopt changes on their own. In this aspect, it is said that these robots only follow the programming instructions and does not utilise their intellect to opt for best solutions during working procedure. These optimised solutions have to be discovered by the programmers or the marketers and implemented in the robots so that they can work optimally.
Conclusion
Thus, it can be concluded that, though business has adopted artificial intelligence in developing their working procedure and enhance the efficiency, it also have some major disadvantage that needs to be considered. After assessing the report, it can be said that, several technology like mining robots, flying drones for transportation and welding robots in the manufacturing unit are developed. Adopting these technologies also ensures more productivity with investing less in the human resources but at the same time, the investment is required to maintain the new technology in the developed robots. These developments of new technology also need current demands of the market and knowledge regarding the programming procedure among the developers. This also needs extra cost and maintenance of the robots so that better productivity and profitability can be assured. In addition to that, the risk for security breaches due to wrong programming, extra scrap due to the dismantled robots are also some major risk and disadvantage for using the automation process. However, this process can be overcome due to effective training among the employees and high maintenance of the robots. The long term goal that the company “Business Intelligence” should adopt are hiring of right people, organizing training for the skill development of employees and addressing the issues of the current business functionalities. The long term goals that are concluded from the research are identification of the upcoming artificial intelligence technology that can be used in manufacturing, transportation and mining industry along with the developing effective communicate more target industry for other business additions. The long-term goals also comprised of development of strategies that can align with the developed technology in the company and identification of the monetary capital for the incorporation of the desired technology.
It is important to identify the recent trends in the robotics and thus continuous development in computer programming should be assessed. In this way, the developers have the proper knowledge regarding the new technology and they can prepare themselves for the changes that they should implement in their robots.
It is recommended for the company not to decrease the amount of human resource in the company. In this way, they can watch the process of the robots and handle them if any inconsistency can be seen in them. Thus, not only the ethical problem of unemployment can be avoided but the working procedure cannot be stopped if there robots faces any adversities as human are there performing the business functionalities.
It is important for the organization to keep regular communication with the supplier and customers so that they proper assessment of the market demands can be attained. In case of the robotics technology that a customer demands, it is important to determine their requirement. This allows the company to develop automatic technology that is useful for future and enough time can also be get to develop the existing program.
