The Importance of Self-Awareness and Learning Experiences in Career Development
Career Development refers to the process that is helpful in forming the work identity of a person. It is a crucial part in relation to human development and spans throughout the entire life of an individual.
According to Krumboltz, career decision is the logical outcome of a complex sequence of the learning experiences. The theory is also known as A Learning Theory of Career Counseling. According to this theory, genetic endowment can help one in becoming successful in a profession. Krumboltz states that environmental conditions act as the second factor in relation to career choice development (Jackson 2015). Happenstance Theory of John Krumboltz emphasizes on the fact that unplanned events can be of extreme merit for the development of one’s career. Going by his theory, unplanning can pave the way for learning and one should be able to deal with change because the labour market is undergoing rapid changes. It harps on the fact how listening to the advice of other people and persistence to deal with competitors can help an individual in his career.
According to the Holland’s Theory, people belong to either one of the six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional (Jackson 2013). When people who have the same kind of personality type work together then a convenient work environment is created. People can use their skills along with abilities in such an environment. People who work in the environment that is similar to that of their personality become successful and satisfied. It states that one should choose work on the basis of one’s personality and that would help one in achieving success. According to this concept, all people can be considered to be a combination of two or more than that of personality type (Jackson 2013). The Holland Theory proves to be extremely useful in identifying the traits that can help an individual to be successful. According to this theory, one should be a listener and ask questions in order to find out about things. This will help an individual to learn and free exchange of ideas will help an individual in understanding about his responsibility.
The Krumboltz Theory lays great amount of importance on learning with the help of observations along with direct experiences. The task approach skills that an individual gradually learns like problem solving and cognitive response greatly helps an individual in becoming proficient in one’s profession. This theory highlights that generalization of self owing to experiences is a great shaper of the personality of an individual and helps an individual in his career. They help an individual in coping with the environment. The Holland Theory takes a cognitive approach to that of career planning (Jackson 2014). He main highlight of the theory is that while choosing their career people tend to prefer jobs in which they can be around others who have the similar kind of mentality. The main crux of this theory is that behaviour can be determined by the help of an interaction between that of personality and environment.
