Being a kid nowadays is an interesting experience, as a teenager & student it’s hard to understand if your on the right path, if what you’re being drawn towards is the correct career choice to be motivated about. Teenagers like me have a pattern of thinking we’re older than we actually are. You’re in an interesting place, you’re too old to have everything done for you, but you’re too young to do whatever you’d like.
We often find ourselves confused and irritated no one will listen to us. I don’t think teenagers should be disregarded and ignored, but it’s hard to take teenagers seriously if they can’t even clean their own rooms. So let’s start with that.
Let’s say you want to sort out your room, and beautify it, because having beauty is important. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, if you don’t have any power, because you’ve got your room.
You’ve got your own space in front of you, that’s apart of something you have control of. You might think, “well what’s there? What do I have that’s in front of me?” Well it depends on how open your eyes are. A famous english poet William Blake said this, “In a transcendent state you can see infinity in the finite” If you want you can take this as being able to see infinity in what you have in your grasp.
Let’s say you want to apply this to your room, and you want to clean it up a little. Well how would you do that exactly?
Well you need to be able to have a good sleep, a room needs to be a place where you can rest. If you can figure that out, you can figure out how to sleep, and if you figure out how to sleep you can figure out when to sleep, and if you can figure out when to sleep you figure out when you should wake up, and when you wake up you have time to think about what clothes you need to put on, and suddenly you figure out you need to arrange your clothes properly so you can be successful.
So, you start to clean your room. And now you’re able to realize what you’re putting your clothes on to do, what are you getting ready for? And your room should serve this purpose. Because if your room is not serving that purpose you’re not going to be happy. The simple space that you travel to and from school is how you feel going there, and it shouldn’t. Think of a place you don’t want to be in or go to, instantly you associate a location with a negative feeling. Your room should be able to facilitate a positive response, so you want to be there. Your room has to be somewhere where you believe it’s worthwhile to stay.
Let’s say the next thing you should do is try to create some beauty in your room. But it’s not easy because suddenly you need to have good taste, but it doesn’t mean you need to have money. It really doesn’t, because you can still be dull and boring while being flashy, I’m sure we can all think of at least one example of this. But you can be tasteful with nothing, all you need is a little taste, and taste beats money when it comes to finding beauty in things. That’s not to say that money is trivial, but taste is crucial, many people who are extremely artistically wired create amazing works of art out of virtually nothing. In the past there’s even evidence suggesting that artists who put restrictions on their work actually facilitate more creativity. Ernest Hemingway, who was a famous american author, challenged himself to create a full story in only six words. Imagine right now trying to develop character background, tone, audience, and a coherent theme in six words. But here’s what he wrote, “For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn”. You see, there’s a lot to that, you can read into it, there’s way more layers than face value. It’s creative, its tasteful, and it’s almost nothing.
When you start to focus more on yourself and your room, there will be ripples and contention happening around you. Just by cleaning your room, you change something within your household. Maybe your family will intervene and wonder what’s going on in there. Let’s say you do come from somewhat of a unfortunate homelife, they might not necessarily be happy with what you’re doing. The better you look, the worse the rest of the house looks, and instead of celebrating your accomplishment you’re pulled back down by your family, and all families do this. I’m sure everyone has hundreds of examples of personal progress only being rejected or disregarded by family, and all that progress gets reverted and you’re back down to a lower level. So if you’re going to be creative in your life you have to be prepared to face the evils of it. Like a zebra with a red stripe, you stand out from the herd, and you have to be ready to be an easy kill because of this.
So when you clean your room, it’s obviously a trivial matter, but you learn so much more than this. You can understand your capacity for creativity, and you obtain a stronger grasp of your family’s inner workings. If you can get through that, you build character. And character is essential for climbing, in everything. You’ll have a greater capacity trying to navigate the real world, whether it be in a job or different social groups. And you’ll leave a positive effect on these situations, because you’ve earned some humility, in just knowing how hard it was to just clean your room. And for any teenagers who might be lost and confused, that is how you get people to listen to you.
