Tesco Plc’s Sustainability Initiatives
The main purpose of the assessment is to review the sustainability framework for the business of Tesco Plc and assess whether the same is consistent with the requirement in UK. The analysis would also be making comparisons with Sainsbury’s Framework Of Sustainability so that it can be established which business has a better framework in terms of sustainability. It is a known fact that for an investors, the financial performance of a business is not the only factors for taking investment decisions but a combination of different factors (Hák, Janoušková and Moldan 2016). The analysis would be assessing the key steps which both Tesco Plc and Sainsbury’s has taken towards sustainability during 2021.
The management of Tesco Plc is dedicated towards sustainability practices and thereby considers the impacts on the environment as a major concern. The management of Tesco has partnered with DRS on a new refrigerated rail freight service that will take 40 Lorries off the road for every journey it makes. This will reduce the emission made duet to the use of fossil fuels. Further, the management has launched six new cleaning supplies which will considerably reduce the use of plastics which also affects the environment (Assembly 2015). In addition to this, the management of the company with the help of their shoppers have donated around 1.5 billion meals to the poor people in order to support the community.
In the similar manner, the management of Sainsbury’s have also recognized the importance of sustainability and specially focused on climate related issues. The business plans to invest around £1 billion over twenty years towards becoming a Net Zero business which is a major step towards sustainability. The business aims to reduce issues like carbon emissions, food waste, plastic packaging and water usage (About.sainsburys.co.uk. 2022). The management intends to promote activities like recycling, biodiversity and healthy and sustainable eating so that the same can lead to the welfare of the community. The supermarkets in different locations have been upgraded with LED lighting which emits low proportion of carbons. The business is also taking steps to create awareness for avoiding food wastage and minimum use of water. The business has also set up programs and targets for ensuring that the plastics which are used re recycled so that the same can be utilized in a better fashion.
The above analysis appropriately shows that the business of Sainsbury’s have a more detailed plan in terms of sustainability in comparison to Tesco Plc. However, both the companies are targeting the same issues which signifies that both are on the right track.
Conclusion
The above discussion appropriately shows that the business of Tesco and Sainsbury’s have an appropriate framework which helps the management to develop strategies which are sustainable in nature. In terms of comparison, the business of Sainsbury’s have better strategies implemented but it is also possible that Tesco Plc would be implementing proper strategies in future.
