Ponyboy, a smart young greaser. Dally, a hoodlum from New York. Very different backstories, and very similar situations. Ponyboy had been previously scarred from his parents death. Dally’s parents are not in his life. Ponyboy was forced to face reality after running away to windrixville, watching his best friend die in a hospital bed, and then watching Dally die the same night, Ponyboy wrote the essay on his reality. On a cold night, with Johnny sleeping in the empty lot, Darry gets mad after Ponyboy comes home late and hits Ponyboy, so he goes to the empty lot to sleep there with johnny.
Socs pull up and jump them, while Johnny ends up killing one, the others run away and the boys decide they need to hide. In this situation they did not want to face the reality of them killing the boy who jumped them. They find Dally at a Buck party, and tell him about how they killed him.
‘Here— he handed us a gun and a roll of bills— ‘the gun’s loaded.” Johnny doesn’t know if he wants to turn himself in or run away, because he doesn’t want to face the problem.
`After Johnny dies, Dally could not believe he was dead. He didn’t want to face the fact that Johnny had died. He was angry he had let Johnny die, so he robbed a gas station. After robbing the gas station he goes to a telephone and calls the greaser gang. “It was Dally. He phoned from a booth.
He’s just robbed a grocery store and the cops are after him. We gotta hide him. He’ll be at the lot in a minute.’ When they get to the lot they see dally running from the cops and they watch as he pulls his unloaded gun out and gets shot a few times by the cops, instantly dying. Everyone went into shock, they couldn’t believe he had died, then Pony passes out because he had a concussion. Pony wakes up about 4 days later and he thinks that Dally and Johnny are both still alive. While he was in the coma he still thought he was in Windrixville. ‘Oh, you thought you were in Windrixville most of the time. Then you kept saying that Johnny didn’t mean to kill that Soc.”
Ponyboy can not accept the fact that Johnny is dead. He thought that maybe johnny was still at the hospital or that he was in Windrixville. “Johnny was dead. But he wasn’t. That still body back in the hospital wasn’t Johnny. Johnny was somewhere else— maybe asleep in the lot, or playing pinball machine in the bowling alley, or sitting on the back steps of the church in Windrixville.” He had a concussion and wasn’t thinking clearly, therefore he couldn’t believe he had died. Ponyboy did not want dally to die but he cannot do anything about it, he knew that Dally had wanted to die. “Even as I begged silently— Please, not him… not him and Johnny both —I knew he would be dead because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.”
Ponyboy Curtis and Dallas (Dally) Winston were forced to face reality, they could not go on any longer without Johnny and they had to do something about it. Dally could not face reality while Ponyboy eventually realized he should face his problems head-on. After Pony and Johnny ran away to windrixville, Johnny died right next to him and Dally died right in front of him in the same night, Ponyboy realized that if no one had fought, this would not have happened. Ponyboy survived the jumpings, discrimination, and killing. After everything that’s happened, Pony understands that there was no need to insult, fight, or even kill.
