Visualization
Elderly people upon reaching a certain age are not able to take of their basic needs. They usually require someone to help them in taking care of them. The problem arises when they lack someone to help them in taking care of their needs this is because their children are not near or have their own families to take care of. We will apply all the necessary design thinking tools on the best way to solve this problem so that the elderly can be taken care of.
This a design tool that usually list all the five stages involved in design thinking. The group members drew an innovation flow chart. It listed all the five stages included in design thinking:empahsise, define, ideate, prototype and test. The outcome of this is that it allowed us to track the progress and ensured that we followed the right criteria as we tried to come up with a solution. The important of using an innovation flow chart it helps you identify tasks you have completed in your design thinking process. It also ensures that you follow the process of design thinking in a systematic way(Meissner,Polt&Vonortas,2017).
Visualization refers to thinking visually according to Finke(2014).It involves portraying a particular scenario or problem in ones mind.
The group members were tasked to visualize problem of aged people. We visualized the situation if we were old people what would we feel if we are not taken care of. We also visualized what you would want in order to improve our situation. This brought the outcome of that we were able to find out what type of information that we will look for that will help us solve the problem.
The importance of visualization is that it usually helps one understand the problem in a personal sense. This is because as you visualize the situation you are able to feel what old people are undergoing. This will give you a guideline as you are trying to find the solution.
This is the process of getting into contact with customers. This can usually be done using questionnaire, interviews and also customers surveys.
The group members decide to travel to an elderly home that had minimum caregivers. We were interviewing some of the elderly who were able to communicate. We also interviewed the caregivers so that they give us information of some of experiences of the elderly. We were able to gather the required information that would help us in developing a solution.
The purpose of journey mapping is so be able to get a view of the individual facing the problem. This is important because once you get into close contact with individuals you are able to generate ideas easily because of the first hand information that they give you(Marquez,Downey& Clement,2015).
This is a tool that usually helps in interpreting information that has been gathered according to Pennebaker(2017).
We developed a simple mind map as a group. The single concept that we were focusing on was problems the elderly face. We then stated some of information that we gathered that we saw would help us.thi s include some feeling lonely due to no one to talk to, lack of people to give them medicine. The members were then tasked in trying to develop a theory that would help solve this problems.
Journey Mapping
Importance of mind map is to help in generation of ideas. This is because information that you usually collect is incomplete the mind map will therefore help you in analyzing this data into meaningful concepts
This is a tool that usually assist in ideating. It usually develops concepts that will help solve the solution.
This stage we took the major information that we interpreted using our mind map. This was that the problem the elderly are facing is lack of care ,support and love. This guided us in developing a concept that they should be in a place whereby there are adequate people that can show them the care they need. The concept can be having a home that is hostel like whereby students and elderly co-exist.
Importance of this particular tool is to developing a theory for solving the solution according to Crain(2015).This is usually achieved by using the information that one interprets using mind map and developing a concept that will help solve the problem.
Purpose of this is to test if your concept that was idealized is working.
We decide to test the assumption by practically put yourself in the situation for a week. We picked a group home that did not have adequate caregivers. We decided to spend a week there co existing with the elderly. We were able to see our solution was working and this is because we were helping them with most of their problems they were facing.
Assumption testing is very important because you are able to find out if indeed your solution is working. It also helps one rectify know problems identifying in testing before sending it out to the market.
This is stage of now introducing the solution to the individuals involved in order for them to test it.
This stage we gave some of the hostel owners and also students aour idea. We picked three hostels that seemed most convenient and had adequate rooms. The elderly were then brought in the hostels.
The feedback that we got from all parties was that it was working and that the elderly were getting taken care of by students. This usually helps in making sure your solution is preferred by customers. It also helps to ensure that your problem is being fixed by the solution that is being implemented according to Pisano(2015).
This is the tool of developing a solution as you are associating with the people facing the problem.
This particular stage we decided do go stay in one of the hostel that had decided to implement our solution. This helped us identify if the problem had actually being solved. It also help us find problems that need to be corrected.
Importance of this stage is so as to be able to relate with individuals facing the problem. This usually helps in knowing if the problem has being solved before you introduce it fully to the individuals facing the problem.
This is now the stage of introducing the solution fully for people to start using it .
This stage we had now verified that our solution of elderly coexisting with students in the hostel is working. It was now time to introduce it .We gave various hostel across our state and other states our solution for them to use it.We then assured them that the solution would solve their problem. The feedback they gave us was that our solution was working.
Purpose of this tool is to conduct a final test and ensure your solution is indeed working. This is usually important as it help to affirm that your solution is the best before people start using it.
This a way of convincing people that this idea will work best and it is best compared to other proposed solutions.
At this stage we described the problem that the elderly are facing to various students and hostel owners. We then continued narrating to them our solution in an appealing way and assured that we had tested and it has solved our problem. This helped in making sure that elderly benefited from our solution. They then assured us that they would test this solution.
Purpose of this is to ensure that you convince people that your idea is the best. This is because when you narrate a good ordeal it convinces the interested parties that your solution indeed solves their problem according to Parkinson& Warwick(2017).
Conclusion
This are the various steps we undertook as we solved the problem of the elderly lacking care. After undertaking the design thinking process carefully, we are able to come up with the solution. The solution is students and elderly coexisting in hostels. The student will be able to take care of the elderly in their free time At the moment we at the story prototyping stage. we are try to convince the people interested that his solution is working efficiently.
