Background of Victoria High School
This report is written with the purpose of designing the proposed Victoria high school wide area network and gathering the various network requirements and estimation of the budget requirement in the installation of the proposed network considering the new devices and the labor required to implement the network.
This project will cover the entire campus which has the various sections including the three student’s practical computer labs that has desktop computers, the teacher’s office that is also fitted with desktop computers, and the security office that is fitted with two computers and a CCTV camera for security monitoring. The main problem to be solved by the installation of this proposed network is the lack of wi-fi network access that is currently accessible in the teaching building only and therefore the proposed network will enable the extension of the wi-fi from the teaching buildings to the football grounds and therefore the network will be accessible from any place in the campus, however the other problem is the network security where the network will accessible to the registered students and staffs only and the guests will be restricted form network access in order to boost the level of security.
During the network implementation there are some set of data that will be used which includes the student’s and the staff’s registration details including the ID numbers which will be used as the access authentications to the wireless network. However the network will therefore connect the three computer labs, the staff’s office and the security office where the various network devices including the routers, wireless access devices and the switches will be used to interconnect the entire network and enable the accessibility of the wi-fi network at any place in the entire campus.
This report therefore covers the campus background, the currently existing network facilities, the current network’s limitations, additional requirements for the current network, the new proposed network designs, and the schedule to follow in the current network implementation, the network resources management plans and the conclusion.
Client Organization and Project Background
This network project is based on the network design for the Victoria High School (VHS) which is funded by the government as public school and is currently found in quite suburb.
This school campus is mainly meant for the training of the various students who are enrolled in the school program starting form year 7 to year 12 and they are much involved in the practical computer learning lessons which are carried out in the three campus labs.
Existing network infrastructure
In this campus there are various staffs who includes the teachers, security officers and the management team, all these staff uses the network in various capacities where the teachers uses the 11 computers in their staff office to carry out the various routine administrative duties while the security officers uses the 2 computers and the CCTV cameras to monitor the entire institution security status.
Current Network and Its Capabilities
The current network in the campus has some already existing services while there are others services that are not existing, therefore the network is only installed locally in the computer labs, staff offices and the security offices and thus the services are only limited to the people who are within the teaching area else those at the football pitch or far from the buildings are not able to access the network (Tom , 2015).
Below is the currently existing network infrastructure that covers the computers labs, teachers offices and the security office.
The above is the current network infrastructure of the campus where it is divided into five sections below is the further explanation of the network infrastructure.
Network type
The current network is design as a hybrid network topology where the various network segments are connected at a central point using the sub-network switches, however all these switches in the access layer they are then connected to one main switch in the distribution layer that is then linked to the network router to form a single network (William, 2014).
Infrastructure
The Network is made of various segments which are then combined to form the entire network, some of the segments includes the lab 1, lab 2 ,lab3 networks that are made of star network ,then the teachers and security networks that makes star networks as well ,however the CCTV camera is linked to the network through the security network segment for better management.
Devices
The current network is made of various network devices and they are of certain models and each type of device has the specific numbers as summarized below.

Services
The current network is able to support various services which are used by the network users and to enable the network to be admissible and secure those services Includes:
- Access to the computers for practical purpose.
- Surveillance in the entire campus compound using the CCTV cameras.
- The limited access to the wireless network at the teaching blocks.
However the current network has some limitation in the access of the wireless network at only the teaching area, therefore the implementation of the new network will enable the campus students and the staffs to access the wireless network using their staff/students ID and the assigned passwords.
Current network limitations
Limitations in the Current Network
In the current network there are some limitations which are aimed to be dealt with by implementation of the proposed network, some of those includes:
- Inability to access the network while in the football pitches.
- The limitation to access network at any location beyond the teaching buildings.
- Lack of security control in access to the campus wireless network.
- In ability of the staffs to use the mobile devices to access the wireless network.
However in order to implement the proposed network that will solve the above limitation below requirements will be considered.
- Network should have wireless devices to supply wireless network.
- Network should request staff/students ID to allow network access.
- The network should have switches to link all the network end devices to the network.
- The network should have a CCTV camera device to monitor the campus activities.
- The network should have a main router to connect all the offices and lab network sections.
Additional Capabilities Required by Client
As part of the network analysis the requirements were gathered from the campus management in order to provide their more network requirements which include the following.
- The network to allow wireless access at any pitch and to the entire campus compound.
- The wireless network should have limited accessibility to the staffs and students only.
- The network should be accessed using the student/staffs ID and passwords.
- The network should enable the users to access the wireless network using their mobile devices.
- The network should allow wireless access to the indoors and outdoors students and staffs who are within the campus.
The figure below shows the proposed campus network that will enable the implementation of the new network services and capabilities. The Schedule of New WLAN Design Project
In the process of implementing this network there are various tasks that will be accomplished and each will required some time schedule to ensure that the network is implemented on time, the table below show the list of tasks to be undertaken throughout the network implementation process.

Conclusion & Limitations of Proposed Project
In this project there are some of problems that required to be solved which included the lack of Wi-Fi access to the other campus area apart from the teaching buildings, lack of network access by other students in the campus apart from the IT students who were only using computers in the lab for practices and poor security to the network facility.
However the proposed wireless local area network had been will be used to solve the existing problems where the staffs and the students will be able to access network any place within the campus compound, and therefore the implementation of the proposed network will improve the level of communication, resources sharing and boost the security level in the network.
In the process of implementing the network there are various things that were learnt which includes the selection of network requirements , how to design the network, how to prepare the network implementation budget and the configuration of the wireless network.
