How you will use these skills to develop your employability and position as an emerging leader in the highly competitive global job market. You will be encouraged to consider how you will evaluate the challenges and opportunities associated with doing business globally, and how you will demonstrate professionalism in cross-cultural situations?
There is a saying that everyone needs to reflect on their personal development in order to understand their own strength and weaknesses and how to deal with the forthcoming opportunities and threats in life. Everyone has their dreams but it takes a lot effort to fulfil those. It requires a lot of concentration and focus to achieve something worthwhile. I have always wanted to become a successful business executive and a successful leader in future and I always knew that it can only be achieved by studying and gaining knowledge about the foundation of the business therefore I have chosen business studies for my post graduate degrees. This serves as a foundation of my future career development. This paper is a self evaluation report with the aim to examine the progress that has been achieved till now and how these help me to improve my future career. This report also includes my experience from the study tour in Singapore and how it has helped me to develop a wider world view while dealing with people in professional and personal life.
Personally I am a quality driven and self motivated individual who has a strong commitment of putting the most effort within my work places. Along with that I also emphasize to maintain an efficient and safe service to the customers. I always demonstrate passion for motivating culinary themes in developing and delivering spectacular outcomes. I have always been highly dedicated towards my work within the organisational environment. I also have a track record of maintaining cleanliness and safety within my work place. I am capable of managing and organizing plans along with maintaining schedule. This also indicates that I have an all over understanding of the organization’s procedures and rules along with the responsibilities of the individuals. So far I have had some experiences in professional life other than the degrees I have achieved. I have done my bachelors in education and commerce along with completing my post graduate degree in commerce. However as I always wanted to pursue my career and became a business executive, I had decided to pursue MBA. The MBA Global program and the study tour in Singapore have helped me to develop and strengthen my skills and expertise that can be helpful in both my professional and personal life. However before I move on to discuss the study tour it is necessary to shed light on the strength and weaknesses I have. My strength and weaknesses for the foundation and background to my career development plan for future. I have strong teamwork skills and a strong zeal to learn more from my professional life. I have always been good with communication and have been previously rewarded within my work places for having a great communication skill within the team. I am always open to learn more and flexible within my job roles. I consider myself to be an innovative learner who can generate various groundbreaking solutions. I can also motivate others to walk towards a shared objective. However I also have some weaknesses that can create images hindrances in my career path. So far I have not achieved much experience in managerial roles and I have identified that my lack of experience impacts my public speaking as well. I have never had any experience in giving presentation or speaking publicly with strangers therefore this inadequate job experience has a negative impact on my motivational level at the same time. I also do not have profound knowledge about cross-cultural business environment as I have never being a part of an organisation where I can get the opportunity to encounter people from different cultural backgrounds. However the MBA Global program and the study tour in Singapore has helped me a lot in understanding the cross cultural environment and how to deal with the potential issues that arise in such situations.
Professional Experiences
So far I have worked which three different organisations where I have learnt many things about dealing with people, communicating with them and fulfil the organisational objectives. While continuing my studies, I have worked in a call centre for Puma Source which has helped me to learn to deal with various kinds of customers with suitable communication skills. I have provided appreciable services within the organization and had received satisfactory outcomes as well. Most of my duties there included attending calls and selling various kinds of products. This has helped me to grow good communication skills not only with my team member, but also with the consumers. However I have experienced that I am only comfortable communicating with them over the phone, I tend to fumble when I have to give a live presentation or experience public speaking. I have also gained major opportunity in attending different customers and carried out various tasks that needed to bring results by specific deadlines. I have also worked at Gull Petroleum Pump where my job roles include taking care of the billing counter, communicating with various customers, cleaning and filing. I have also worked as a teacher at J.S.D senior secondary school where I had taught Mathematics. My teaching experience has taught me to be more patient and deal with individuals. I have also enjoyed the job here and I could identify that my teaching skills have executed great impact on the overall result of the students. Right now I am working at Fresh Grower’s Market at Queens Park at a filing job. This job helps me to learn more within the organizational environment and since I am working on Student visa, I can also opt for more part-time jobs.
From the experiences I had in professional life, there are few leaders who have influenced my career choice and ethical values to a great extent. I have come across a great leader while walking at the call centre. His values and beliefs have influenced and shaped my perspectives to a great extent. He was a leader who tends to articulate and take proper actions to make the objectives materialize and inspired all of us to do better work and come together while working. He has been a great influence me to reshape my aim and my thoughts about being a business executive and a successful leader in future. There have also been different events throughout my career which has contributed to shape my perspective about my future professional life. While walking in different organisations I have developed my thinking about business administration. My experience of working as a teacher in the school has always helped me to understand that there might be situations where the expectations and reality do not match and it is necessary to align our own personal values and beliefs with the organisations. I have also learnt team building skills from there. Managing the students and taking necessary steps for any irregularity has helped to shape this skill. Shortly after I joined as a maths teacher I was promoted and I was really happy with this promotion. However my dreams was shattered soon after when I realised that I have been promoted only to work strictly as the administration wants me to work. There was no option to put innovation in the teaching practices and we were only asked to teach and work according to the school administration. Therefore I had experienced a great challenge to convince the administration that the students need innovative ways and methods in teaching as those will encourage them studying more effectively which can bring more success for them. However I managed to do so after some time which indicates to my integrity and courage to stick to my ethical beliefs.
Leadership and Ethical Beliefs
Leadership is mostly about exerting influence in a weekend to encourage other individuals to follow and achieve a desired result. I aspire to become a leader who will able to induce people to have a common goal. Leadership includes managing relationships and strategies within the organisation and working within dynamics that has been a line a common vision and it can also go beyond personal interest of the employees. This may include to the collaborative dynamics amongst the employee and the manager which indicates that both share the risks and benefits within its pursuit. From my past experiences I have identify that it is important for the leaders to understand the inner dynamics of the organisation and the employees at the same time. Learning organisation theory has taught me the requirement for own personal mastery that can be defined as the openness to different questions regarding own perspectives. In the study tour in Singapore I have understood that it is important to give necessary opportunities to define an event from other perspectives as well. In this global environment, I may have to work with people who come from diverse backgrounds; therefore I will always have to broaden my worldview while solving any conflict. The learning organisation theory has also introduced me to the understanding and system thinking about the integrated wholeness of a firm. It helps me to understand human communication in different way and the manual which helps us to construct on mental maps. I have also learnt from the study tour that it is necessary for a leader to have a great mastery over his or her own behaviour so that he or she can be capable of influencing others. I have also identified that there might be transformational changes within the organisation and while that occurs it is change ourselves according to the situation. Therefore I made a commitment to myself that I will learn the difference amongst people and I will develop a personal flexibility so that I can value other people who are coming from cross-cultural background within the organisational system. However I find this decision to be challenging and free in at a same time due to some reasons. Having a flexible attitude within a corporate system is challenging and I will have to explore my leadership quality outside the conventional hierarchy and the power structure through the authority of my position. However considering myself as an independent contributor I can liberate myself from the conventional ideas and derived values from powers roles. I also identify myself to be an analytical person who can evaluate a situation closely and take fair decision. I try to think in creative and flexible way so that I can manage the global organizational environment easily.
Future Career Goals
Therefore I will focus more on being an adaptive leader who will try to bring out the best out of his or her employees and motivate them to think in a different way. As stated by researchers the contemporary organizations require adaptive leaders as nowadays challenges do not really reside within the executive suite, rather major challenges can be found within the collective intelligence of all of the employee at all the levels of the organization. Therefore it can be indicated that bringing success for the organization involves bringing innovative ideas and concepts from the employee level. I have always believed in bringing this kind of a change and I am well aware that this can be a major challenge for my future career as well while I take up the role as a leader. Furthermore, it can also be said that bringing adaptive changes will need employees to work in innovative methods, taking on new job roles and many more. Therefore as a leader my job will be to motivate my subordinates in a way that they can bring out the best out of them and work towards a common goal.
Conclusion
In this regard, it can be said that I will also have to develop few skills in order to become an effectual leader in future. I will have to develop technical skills that will help me to develop and analyze the requirements and solve issues if necessary. However, it is more important for me to develop human skills so that I can deal with all the employees within the global environment. In this competitive business environment, I will have to deal with people who are coming from different countries, different values and different cultural backgrounds. Having a cross-cultural work force is always beneficial for an organization as it can be helpful for the management to broaden their world view and solve problems more innovatively; however it is always necessary to communicate with all of them properly. Collaborating with multiple teams can always be advantageous for the organization but it is necessary to make every employee feel valued within the organizational framework. Therefore as a leader I will have to widen my knowledge base along with enhancing my skills and expertise in order to become successful in my future goals.
