Introductory Icebreaker
In pursuance of this assignment, the four of us came together to form a group and make this presentation on ‘Discrimination in social work’ focusing on the factors of how one can be discriminated against in their workplace. For the purpose of this assignment, we had divided the group mindfully, vesting responsibility among each one of us depending on our area of expertise or matters that we were more comfortable researching and discussing about. Dividing the overall presentation into four segments: the Icebreaker, introduction to discrimination in context of social work, evaluation of the matter from legal context and lastly, workplace inclusivity.
Through the introductory icebreaker, the dynamic between the group members were well explained to the audience, which is usually friendly yet professional. We certainly know each other as classmates, striving to achieve the common goal. Thus, it is certain that we understand the importance of this assignment along with the significance of each one of our participation and effort towards it. We agreed to the point that making this presentation would not just fetch us good grades, it would also help us derive some extremely knowledge on the perils of discrimination, especially at workplace pertaining to social work. At the very beginning of starting to work on the planning of the project, we made sure that we were comfortable working with each other, since we knew very little of each other even being course-mates. We ensured to have an open discussion within the group, in order to know what we were comfortable doing for this presentation and what was the expectation towards the team. The aim and objective of the presentation was discussed and the doubts were cleared on individual basis. The factors that boost the productivity of the group, making it a productive group like smooth communication, consensus between the members, targeting a common aim, focusing on individual responsibility, retaining mutual respect and inclusivity of members equally. Lastly, the importance of deadline is the factor we had thoroughly discussed and adhered to, in order to submit the project within the stipulated time.
As mentioned earlier, we ensured to divide the content mindfully, considering what was our area of expertise or what we wanted to worked on, after having a lengthy team discussion. Navjot was handed over the responsibility to open the presentation with a brief yet robust introduction, aiming to make the audience understand what is it all about and what to expect of this presentation. There was a slight disagreement to this matter, which I would cover in the upcoming segment; as to how we worked together to overcome the issue.
Nevertheless, the execution of the shared responsibility was seamlessly carried out, making it an ideal team and team effort, if one evaluated it. The team members were able to put forward their opinion towards the work, which has been heard by the team, considering if they could be incorporated to the final presentation for improving its quality. The arrangement of the presentation was also done unanimously agreeing to the particular format, design, font, arrangement of content, approach toward the viewers, et cetera. There was no one team member who enjoyed an absolute leadership position in our team, for we were happy to share the position of decision-makers at each point, having the other team members agreeing to our vision.
Factors Affecting Productivity
From deciding the content of the project to its arrangement, our tutor has been a constant support and guide, who has helped our resolving our queries untiringly. We made sure to discuss the draft in order to confirm that we were proceeding in the right direction. Although the main focus of the presentation is on discrimination in context to social work, however, we made sure to incorporate certain portion that would reflect on the business perspective of discrimination in commercial workplace by pointing out the necessary actions to be taken by the organisations to prevent discrimination at workplace. Further, Amber discussed the legal provisions to prevent all forms of discrimination in Australia, under every circumstance, thus pointing out the expansion of the paper, which is not limited to social work in particular even though it is the main area of focus.
It would be incorrect to say that we did not disagree at any point while conducting the research, arrangement and overall preparation of the project. There were disagreements on a number of occasions, especially in terms of dividing the responsibility among the team members. However, such differences were finally cleared right before starting the work, on the note that it would be good for the final presentation if we carried out the work this way. The team members were flexible enough to understand the overall situation, thus finally submitting to the majority decision. There was negotiation in regard to the design and format of the final presentation, and to clear this disagreement, we had to take the help of certain external people who we showed samples of some portion of the presentation and a few other designs to confirm which one looked better to the viewers. There was negotiation in regard to the arrangement of the content, as to which part goes first and which one to present later. Such differences were resolved by having a discussion with our tutor, who has guided us throughout this project on different occasions.
There was no other significant point on which we had a clear disagreement that stalled the work for some time, however, constant negotiation in regard to improve the quality of work was present throughout the period of delivery of the project, which I do not think, should be marked as disagreement. They were, rather, signs of the involvement of the team members into the project, signifying how we were all so involved in making the presentation and working of its success. We saw these negotiations as a healthy sign of team bonding and equal participation of the team members, suggesting how serious we were regarding the importance of delivering good quality presentation.
Whenever there was an issue which seemed likely to be unresolved amongst us, we were lucky to be attended by our tutor, who patiently listened to our needs and resolved it in no time, just like the ‘Equal Opportunity Commission’ and the ‘Human Rights Commission’ helping the aggrieved workers, as we mentioned in the presentation. While, the organisational policies acted as the guiding law that helped us maintain a decorum and a balance among ourselves.
Dividing the Presentation Mindfully
With two male and two female members in the team, we ensured to strike a perfect gender balance. In addition, the diverse ethnicity of our group could be indicated as a perfect example of diversity inclusion at work, making sure that we respect each other’s ethnicity and the distinct perspective that is likely to differ based on distinct race, community and nationality. Adhering to our own topic of discussion of the paper, we ensured that none of the team members felt left out or discriminated against, while preparing for the presentation. We ensured to offer respect and gratitude towards each one of us, divided by ethnicity yet united by the power of knowledge and education that has brought us together for achieving the same goal, not only through this presentation but also through this course which has been an equally enlightening for us four.
Through this presentation, we have strived to find out our values, ethos and vision towards this course and to people around us in general. By values and vision, I believe as a student of social work, it is my duty to be empathetic and respectful towards my clients and colleague, in order to order to achieve the vision of my work, which is to extend a helping hand to whoever needs it. As a social worker, I would like to come across as an approachable and flexible person, who could be asked for help.
Personally, I have understood the value of inclusivity and the importance of valuing diversity amongst us. It is needless to mention that this world is home to innumerable ethnicities and communities, where people come together from the farthest corners, in respect to incur knowledge from educational institutions and then exhibit their competency in globally-functioning bodies; naturally signifying that a congregation of people from different race, community, nationality, language. To achieve a common goal, it is therefore, imperative to respect diversity and welcome differences of race and culture with open arms, not just to achieve a professional goal but to ensure that everyone feels comfortable working within the same space. From this presentation, I have specifically learnt that perspectives of different people working in a team may not match, however, there are ways to discuss and resolve it respectfully, rather than letting it take the shape of a collision. Thus, I strongly believe that team projects should be encouraged, which would help the students build all the necessary interpersonal attributes needed to conduct their job roles in an organisation or otherwise in general in life.
This presentation has been delivered by another group where I was asked to supervise the team performance and subsequently provide a reflection on. I think it is a fairly drafted presentation comprising of robust information and images, which makes it look quite intriguing for the readers. The team work was strategically divided and distributed among the members, where one collected the relevant information, another arranged and decided what to edit out and what to keep as significant to the presentation, lastly the responsibility of making the presentation look presentable was vested on another’s capable shoulder. The experience was certainly fulfilling, for all of us got to learn something or the other in the course of this process, especially the art of research, planning, collecting, sorting and presenting a formal presentation, which was not as simple as it may sound. The task distribution among us was primarily done on the basis of who is more comfortable doing what, since having old experience in making professional presentation. As similar to the task distribution, the task to present it before the class was also divided among the team members. There was no sign of gender-based discrimination or any form of bias towards the female members of the team, for it has been portrayed that all members deserve equal opportunity irrespective of any distinction that they might bear coming from different backgrounds. As appointed to supervise, I made sure that even the slightest form of disagreements is not taken light-heartedly, but paid great attention to the distinguishing opinion laid down by all, each one intending to improve the quality of the presentation. However, for the sake of maintaining a balance, it was not possible to honour all requests of inclusion, yet what is more important was the handling of the conflicts and resolving them in no time.
Incorporating Business and Legal Context
Amidst the professional execution of the presentation, I have felt certain gaps that the members have left in it; one such gap is the lack of definition of the main topic of discussion which is Dialectical Behavioural Theory was something unexpected. Also, the absence of a stating a purpose of the presentation could also make a reader or viewer quite confused in understanding as to what the authors or presenters aimed in projecting. The presentation certainly lacked a good binding as well as a structure, comprising of an introduction and a conclusion, which facilitates a good start and a smooth ending. Repetition of slides (slides 9 and 11) could be pointed out as another gap in the arrangement and presentation, which could have been avoided with more focus and precision. Nevertheless, the effort must be appreciated to the fullest, especially for choosing such a topic, which is often avoided for its complexity. The technicalities of the presentation were fair and simple, which complimented the complex topic of discussion. I would like to congratulate the team for its efforts and good team performance, which is appreciable.
This is another presentation delivered by a group of classmates who chose the topic of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I, on the other hand, was asked to provide a review of the presentation after it ready but before it was to be submitted for final submission. The final draft offered a professional look, for it used smart art, graphics, good images along with making it a point to incorporate good content. The team has put equal effort in collecting, selecting and incorporating data as well as arranging them in the form of great visual presentation, which is the main agenda behind a PowerPoint presentation. The team, as informed by the team members, was systematically divided, by vesting only one type of responsibility to a particular member. One of them collected the information, another arranged and decided what to edit out and what to retain for incorporating in the presentation, lastly the responsibility of actually giving a structurer to the presentation to look presentable was vested upon another’s vision, who has brought the entire thing together with a uniform vision. This strategy has helped the team to main a uniformity in the presentation, for “too many cooks spoil the broth” as we all know. A symmetry in the structuring, arranging and presentation with the help of smart art, graphics, shapes, images, transitions, designs, et cetera came in good use for taking the presentation to the next level.
As informed by the team members, there were little or no disagreement between the team members in the course of carrying out the presentation, for they have pre=agreed to the distributive pattern of responsibilities of the presentation work and being determined not to interfere in each other’s territory. However, there was a slight difference of opinion in regard to the part of presenting it before the class, where it was indecisive as to who would present what. To one’s surprise, they used a random chit or lottery method to decide who would read what. It may seem like a very childish way to resolve a professional issue; however, I feel sometimes childish or child-like gestures could help us get out of complex situations that we cannot think of overcoming as adults. The team has made sure to deliver their work within the stipulated deadline, even though they had followed a long procedure to collect, select, arrange and incorporate the information to form the body of the presentation, even before beginning to start building the skeleton of the presentation.
There is hardly anything to criticise about this work, nevertheless, I would like to point out that the team has either overlooked to incorporate or did not feel the need to attach the purpose of the presentation at the very beginning, as otherwise it could be a little confusing for the viewers who does not have any prior knowledge about the background of the work. A proper introduction, aim and conclusion, therefore, is a must according to my perception.
