The Significance of Trade Unions in the Pacific Islands
The paper will introduce the five ways in which the trade unions can be reviewed, and also about the five ways of government that could help in reviewing the trade unions. There are almost 20 Pacific islands countries in the world; the focus is towards the south pacific and the oceanic council of the trade unions that are involved in facilitating advisory services and technical assistance to the federations of the trade unions. Moreover, the primary objective is to discuss the functions, regulations, rights, formations, objectives, and liabilities of the trade union. It also provides the impact of the trade union in the Pacific islands.
A trade is union is defined as an organization or that particular group which workers in have their respective goals and aims well presented. The trade is essential for both the employees and the employers as it helps in reducing the gap between the employees and the employers. For employees, the members of the union tend to retain higher wages as compared with the non-plagiarized workers. It has been seen that the trade unions sometimes also act as the representatives of the concerned workers in case of various legal matters (Bhagwati, 2017). Also, it needs to be understood that the rights of the employees are placed in a better way so that it helps them in providing the best efforts (Ceron, A. and Negri, 2018). On the other hand, the employers find it useful too, because the employers and the employees’ rights both are protected in a better way, and it ultimately results in providing more efficiency and effectiveness throughout the work processes and finally improves the productivity of the firm.
While the ways of reviewing trade unions are to investigate their essential objectives, functions, their entire working, formation and the registration of the trade unions (Chan, 2016). There are four of the crucial objectives of a trade unions, they are; ensuring complete security for the workers and obtaining of better economic returns in order to promote the overall growth of the firm throughout the concerned market segments securing power for influencing management and securing power for influencing the government (Chan, and Hui, 2014). The ways of execution of the work processes need to be modified to enhance the overall growth of the firms in between the trade is being practiced. The best ways to review a trade union is to identify its functions that they have been followed properly, which includes:
- Providing secure fair wages to the employees or the workers
- Safeguarding the security of tenure for improving the conditions of the services (Culpepper, and Regan, 2014)
- Enlarging the opportunities for training and the promotions
- To boost and enhance the overall working and the living conditions
- Promoting the interests of the workers throughout their concerned industry
- Helping the individual, collective welfare
- Providing educational, recreational facilities and cultural facilities throughout the society
Ways of Reviewing Trade Unions
The registrars play the vital role in appointing and executing the different processes involved within trade unions.
There are few of the shortcomings of the trade unions which generates crucial impact on the execution of the business processes between the companies concerned. The five ways in which they can be reviewed are as follows:
- It should start with the application of the registration for the concerned trade by the respective trade unions. The applications should include the necessary documents required for the development of the interested trade practices by the relevant government (Geary, 2016). Firstly, the use of should consist of the occupations for which the trade needs to be executed, and it should also include the addresses where the business will be practiced. The name and the nature of the deal should be visible to perform the concerned companies. Moreover, it is the primary responsibility of the government to witness every single detail on it.
- It should start after the appointment of the registrars for the particular state, and then there needs to be verification of the details as per the provisions listed for the execution of the trade practices.
- The provisions should be visible as per the rules of the concerned trade unions. A trade union may not be entitled to registration unless the executives are constituted under the corresponding provisions of this act (Hope et al., 2014).
- It becomes the primary responsibility of the registrar to verify each of the requirement as per the provisions mentioned and in case of any discrepancies, the same needs to be conveyed with the concerned trade unions and with the required authorities (Lenz et al., 2015). The registrar will then issues the desired certificate after verifying details under the section and the document should be prescribed in the appropriate form with conclusive evidence and should be duly registered.
- There will be cancellation of the registration in case of any of the discrepancies found under the concerned section, and the certificate may be withdrawn. In case of any mistakes mentioned, then it should be corrected as per the provisions specified. These ways are considered to be vital to evaluate the execution of the trade practices for the Pacific islands countries.
There are 20 Pacific Islands Countries which are scattered over one-third part of the globe. The south pacific and the oceanic council of the trade unions are engaged in providing technical assistance as well as the advisory services to the trade union federations throughout the Pacific islands. The key to effective trade unions reforms is a dedicated social responsibility among the state, employers, and workers themselves (Locke, 2015). When the questions come to labor unions in the Pacific Island Nations, colonial unity has impacted the trade unions at present. Due to issues of a labor market in the Pacific Islands, several workers have searched in other places for new opportunities. More than 500,000 Pacific Islanders live in other nations, and the number is increasing day by day. There are five ways the government of Pacific Islands Nations could help to revive and improve the trade unions in the Pacific Islands Countries. They are as follows:
- The government of the Pacific Islands Countries could assign a person to be the registrar of trade unions in each state of the Pacific Islands Nations. The government might appoint as many additional registrars for the trade unions if it fits for the purpose of supervising and discharging under the leadership of the registrar. These powers of the registrars might declare the local limits under which the additional registrar could manage and remove the particular controls.
- Both Fiji and Papua New Guinea has employment facilities under the government, but they have faced many problems regarding these facilities (Markovits, 2016). The government should try to create new employment strategies on the regular basis that built more options of jobs for the increasing unemployment. The government could further develop the legal and economic framework which would contribute to the private companies.
- The government could increase the options of migration as well as creating new opportunities for the low-skilled employees (Price, 2017). The seasonal employment schemes in Australia and New Zealand gives chances to the Pacific Islanders for more earning policies. But, the officials in other Pacific Island Nations could also encourage the opportunities for positive outcomes by developing the employment procedures.
- One of the ways is to develop effective policies and agreements to boost the overall effectiveness while execution of the trade practices for the various trade unions. It needs to be understood that an agreement among the members of the registered trade union may not be void by any of the reason that is in restraint of the particular trade (Mauno et al., 2017).
- Improving the ways to enhance the weak financial positions. It has been seen if the average yearly income of the respective unions remains very low or inadequate, then the subscription firm the members are not adequately paid on time and thus, the government of Samoa needs to bring some of the crucial strategies in order to enhance the policies regarding the financial positions to undertake a program for the concerned workers. Moreover, the government should identify the applications by the provisions listed for the trade practices of the concerned unions.
The government of Samoa plays the vital role in evaluating the effectiveness of the execution of the trade practices by each of the trade unions. There are four of the main types of the trade unions; these are General unions, industrial trade unions, craft unions, and the white-collar trade unions. Moreover, the other ways of reviewing the trade unions can be regarded as striking, parading, boycott and collective bargaining.
