INTRODUCTION:
British Columbia is the third most populous province of Canada. British Columbia is also shortly named as BC which is the westernmost province of Canada. The name British Columbia is chosen by Queen Victoria and proclaimed in the year 1858.
Columbia word of British Columbia was derived from the Columbia to river named by the American Captain Robert Gray from the name of his ship Columbia. BC comes under confederation on July 20,1871. The government type runs in the British Columbia is constitutional monarchy and the legislature is legislature of British Columbia. The capital of this beautiful province is Victoria which is located on the edge of Vancouver Island.
Victoria is also internationally known as city of gardens. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada and Fan tan Alley is the narrowest street in Victoria.
LOCATION
British Columbia is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. British Columbia is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and the American state of Alaska, to the North of Yukon territory and the Northwest territories, to the east by the province of Alberta and to the south of American states of Washington, Idaho and Montana. The land area covered by British Columbia is around 944,735 square kilometers.
POPULATION
This province has a population of 5.071 million as per year 2019. British Columbia includes 52 cities, from which Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Abbotsford are the populous cities. However, Vancouver is the most popular city in British Columbia with the highest Population of 633,825 and the Greenwood with lowest popularity with the population of 58,778 as per year 2018.
GEOGRAPHY
British Columbia has a very diverse geography which includes landscapes like rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, forests, lakes, mountains, inland deserts and grassy plains. The valley known as Fraser valley has rich agricultural land which produces fruits and vegetables at large scale. The piece river valley in the northeast grows the 90% of this province’s grain like wheat, barley and oats. Most of BC is rugged and wild with few towns and roads. Whereas, half of this province lives in the southern part.
LANGUAGE
British Columbia is the province with multilingual people, but English is the main language of BC. After English the most common languages spoken in this province are Cantonese and Mandarin, German, Punjabi, Tagalog, French, Korean, Spanish and Farsi.
CLIMATE
The climate of Canada’s third popular province is influenced by the Pacific Ocean and its mountain ranges. Areas along the south coast of BC has a mild climate all the year. Summers on the coastline are warmer while the winters are milder with the very less chance of having the temperature below freezing level. The interior and central regions are much hotter in summers with the approximate temperature of 30 degrees and the winters are cooler and snowier. While in the northern part of British Columbia, winters are very cold with a lot of snow and summers are very short. Along the north coast, there is rain at the most of the times including spring, summer, and fall whereas winters are cold. Heavy snowfall occurs mainly in the mountains.
CULTURE
British Columbia is North America’s most multicultural province, as the people from all around the world lives here especially Asians and Europeans.
GREETINGS
British Columbia is similar to Toronto in the form of busy and fast paced environment. People usually do acknowledgements to strangers or known people in the form of ‘hi’. People also say ‘Ni Hao’ due to the huge Asian population. British Columbia is the friendliest and the accepting people province. When one person greets the other people, you always get response of your greeting even if the person is busy. People in British Columbia shake hands to introduce themselves and also while departing. While short hugs are for closer friends and kisses are for family or lovers. However, French- Canadian people living in BC engage in the European practice of giving light cheek kisses as part of family greeting.

AGRICULTURE
Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of this province. British Columbia has mostly two-third of forested area whereas only small portion of area is suitable for agriculture. The most valuable soils of British Columbia are alluvial soils that is developed on sand and silt deposited by streams and rivers. South of British Columbia is rich in pedo cal soils. Whereas the podzol soil covers the area around the coastline. Production well drained soils, adequate irrigation and good fertilization. Agriculture and food production can enhance the business of the farmers at large scale due to the moderate climate, fertile soils and good access of water. Agriculture in BC includes farming, livestock, field crops such as berries, vegetables, fruit trees, seafood, commercial fishing and food processing. Large type of production occurs in Vancouver Island and BC’s southern interior. Whereas other production area includes Kootenay, Cariboo and northern region which has a small amount of production. Crops produced at larger scale include potatoes, sweet corn, cucurbits, lettuce, carrots and peas. Another type of crops includes asparagus, beet, Chinese vegetable, onions, radishes and spinach.
