Essays on Almost, Maine

About Almost, Maine

The play Almost, Maine is a series of nine short plays that are all interconnected. The plays all take place on a cold, clear, winter night in the town of Almost, Maine. The town is so small that it doesn’t even have its own zip code. The first play, Her Heart,” is about a woman named Ginny who is waiting for her husband, Pete, to come home from work. Ginny is very pregnant and is having contractions. She is also having doubts about her marriage and whether or not she really loves Pete. The second play, “Sad and Glad,” is about a couple, Jim and Deena, who are going through a divorce. They are still living in the same house and have to share a bed. They are trying to be civil, but it is clear that they are still very much in love with each other. The third play, “This Hurts,” is about a man named Phil who has been hit in the head with a hockey puck. He is in the hospital and his wife, Mae, is by his side. Phil is having a lot of trouble speaking and Mae is having trouble understanding him. The fourth play, “They Fall,” is about two men, Tim and Steve, who are falling in love with each other. They are both afraid to admit their feelings, so they keep trying to push each other away. The fifth play, “Waiting for the Moon,” is about a woman named Lorna who is waiting for her husband, Dave, to come home from work. Lorna is pregnant and is having doubts about her marriage and whether or not she really loves Dave. The sixth play, “Spaghetti,” is about a woman named Marie who is trying to cook dinner for her husband, John. John is very picky about his food and is always criticising Marie’s cooking. Marie is also having doubts about her marriage and whether or not she really loves John. The seventh play, “They Don’t Talk Anymore,” is about a couple, George and Rena, who have stopped talking to each other. They are living in the same house and share the same bed, but they haven’t spoken to each other in years. The eighth play, “Seeing the Thing,” is about a man named Andy who is blind. He is in love with a woman named Ruth, but he has never seen her. Ruth is in love with Andy, but she is afraid to tell him. The ninth play, “Almost Moon,” is about a woman named Sarah who is trying to find her way back to her car in a snowstorm. She is lost and is getting very cold. She comes across a man named Neil, who is also lost. They decide to spend the night together in a cave. Almost, Maine is a play about love and loss, and the different ways that people deal with those things. It is a play about hope and second chances. It is a play about the little town of Almost, Maine and the people who live there.”
