In the late 1700s, the British Navy is impressment: forcing men into service on ships. Billy Budd, a young, handsome sailor is impressed onto the HMS Bellipotent. He is a good-natured man and is liked by everyone on board, except for the ship’s master-at-arms, John Claggart. Claggart falsely accuses Billy of planning a mutiny and of being a traitor. Billy is put on trial and sentenced to be hanged. As he is being led to the gallows, he cries out that Claggart is the traitor.
