About Bud, Not Buddy
Bud, Not Buddy is about a ten-year-old boy named Bud Caldwell who lives in Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression. Bud is an orphan and has spent most of his life in foster homes and orphanages. He has never known his father and his mother died when he was six years old. When we meet Bud, he is living in a foster home with a family who mistreats him. He runs away from the foster home and sets out to find his father, whom he believes is a famous jazz musician named Herman E. Calloway.Bud hitchhikes to Grand Rapids, where Calloway is supposed to be playing with his band. When Bud finally meets Calloway, he is not the man he was expecting. Calloway is a mean, gruff man who wants nothing to do with Bud. But Bud is determined to stay with Calloway and his band, and eventually he wears Calloway down. Calloway allows Bud to stay with the band and even starts to treat him like a son.
The band travels around the country, playing jazz music and making people happy. Bud finds a family in the band, and for the first time in his life, he feels like he belongs somewhere. But the Great Depression is hard on everyone, and soon the band is forced to stop playing and find other jobs to make ends meet. Bud gets a job in a soup kitchen, and he also starts to help Calloway with his business.Calloway’s business is a club for black people, and it is not doing well. But Bud comes up with a plan to save the club, and it works. The club becomes a big success, and Bud is finally able to relax and enjoy his life. He has found a home, and he knows that he will never be alone again.
