Essential elements of the strong organizational culture
Leadership is able to affect the culture of an organization in a huge manner. Personal cultures and organizational cultures are able to affect the ways by which the leaders of modern organizations are able to shape their leadership qualities. Culture is able to cause friction when the style of the leaders is different from the principles that have been developed by the organizations. The essay will be based on the analysis of elements of organizational culture that are considered to be important. The ways by which multicultural organizations can be developed will be analysed in the essay (Asumah, Nagel & Rosengarten, 2016). The relationship of leadership and organizational culture is an important part of the analysis.
Essential elements of the strong organizational culture
A healthy and strong organizational culture for the companies in order to develop its successful operations in the industry. The productivity of employees is also affected in a positive manner by the culture of organizations. The smart employers have effective knowledge based in ways by which talent can be retained. The development of an enjoyable workplace is an important factor that is able to affect the operations of the modern companies (Boese & Marotta, 2017). Employees need to be comfortable within the organization and free to make their own decisions as well. The five major elements of organizational culture are as follows,
Leadership is the most important element of the organizational culture and the success of companies are based on the empowerment of employees in an effective manner. The leaders have the responsibility of developing the culture of the organization. Levels of transparency in the communication process needs to be maintained in order to communicate the core values to the employees. The culture needs to provide effective levels of help to the employees. Listening is another important element of organizational culture. The focus groups and surveys need to be used by the management in order to understand the likes and dislikes related to the company (Chin, Desormeaux & Sawyer, 2016).
The commitment levels of the employees are able to build a strong culture and attention need to be provided in order to improve the profitability levels of the organization in an effective manner. The recruitment process which is implemented by the organization needs to be based on the core values. The values of the organizations need to be aligned with the recruitment process so that a positive culture is developed. The development of a positive culture is considered to be an important factor that can affect the organizational process (Girdauskiene & Eyvazzade, 2015).
Ways by which leadership can ensure inclusive and multicultural organization
Ways by which leadership can ensure inclusive and multicultural organization
As discussed by Gündemir et al. (2017), leadership is able to play a key role in the development of positive culture within a multicultural and inclusive organization. The global organizations consist of employees who belong to different backgrounds and cultures. A person who belongs to the Middle East may be working in an US-based multinational organization. The employees need to develop connection with the organization and work towards the overall organizational goals. The cultural barriers in the organizations provide huge challenges to the management and the leaders. The development of communications and technology has affected the ways by which a multicultural organization can be led and managed.
According to Gupta and Van Wart (2015), the diversity within an organization is considered to be an important factor that is able to affect the ways by which the leaders play their role. The leaders need to aim at integrating the employees within the organizational culture so that they become an important part of the company. The leaders try to practice mentorship so that the members of the team can be retained and they are able to focus on the long term based career goals as well. The opportunities related to growth that are offered by the organization are discussed by the leaders. The development and learning based programs that are developed by the organization can be implemented in an effective manner by the leader.
The leader finally aims at improving the organizational environment in order to maintain the levels of diversity and multiculturalism. For example, the CEO of Starbucks Howard Schultz is considered to be an effective leader who is able to manage the multicultural employees in a successful manner. The workplace culture which is developed in Starbucks is considered to be extraordinary in nature. The organization was committed to uphold a culture in which diversity is provided high value. Diversity is an important part of the different activities that are performed by the management of Starbucks (Hassanzadeh et al., 2015).
The inspiration that is provided by Howard Schultz by the organizational culture is considered to be an important part of the organizational culture. Howard Schultz has been able to play a key role in restructuring the operations of Starbucks in the year 2002. The leader started paying major attention to the needs and demands of the consumers in the industry. Howard Schultz also aimed at developing training programs for the employees so that they are able to gain the skills that are required for coffee making. The main motto which was developed by the CEO was to develop coffee with ultimate passion. The CEO also aims at providing effective benefits to the employees and even to the part timers of the organization (Korzilius, Bücker & Beerlage, 2017).
Example of Starbucks: Effective Leadership in Multiculturalism
The positive culture that has been developed by the leader is considered to be an important factor which is based on the levels of equality that is maintained within the organization. The culture that has been developed by the CEO of Starbucks is able to provide positive vibes to the employees and diversity is maintained in an effective manner as well. Another major example of an organization where diversity is maintained effectively is Google. The organization is known in the technology industry for the high levels of diversity among the employees. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai has provided huge levels of importance towards the maintenance of diversity within the organization (Kymlicka, 2016).
The CEO has taken major steps for the purpose of solving the issues that are related to increasing the levels of transparency within the organizational processes. The issues that have occurred in the organization related to sexual harassment and assault have been taken into consideration by the CEO of Google. The leader has implemented policies that are related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, workplace related concerns and standards of conduct. Pichai has been able to depict effective leadership qualities in order to maintain the profitability levels of the organization (Moran, 2017).
The concerns raised by the employees have been handled in a transparent way by the CEO. This has been able to affect the diversity in Google in a positive manner. The care provided to employees belonging to different backgrounds in Google is same and this makes the employees coming from various parts of the world feel like they are an important part of the organizational operations. The issues based on discrimination and harassment have been handled in an efficient manner by the specialty team which has been developed by the CEO. The sexual issues which have been taken into consideration by the CEO and leaders of Google.
The leadership qualities of Sundar Pichai are considered to be important for the operations of Google and improvement of revenues and profitability levels of the organization. The chief diversity officer of Google is responsible for leading discussions on a monthly basis related to the topics of diversity, inclusion and equity. The training which is provided to the new hires or employees in the organization will also be able to play a key role in enhancing the productivity levels and the work process as well. Apple is another major example of a diverse organization which operates on a global basis (Park, 2015).
Example of Google: Solving Diversity Concerns through Effective Leadership
The employees who have been hired by Apple in the past few years mainly include, Latino, Asian and black workers. The leadership ranks in Apple are provided to women which is considered to be a major step towards diversity that has been taken by the organization. The workforce which has been developed in Apple consists of 68% male employees and 32% female employees. The changes in diversity levels of Apple have taken place after the appointment of Tim Cook as the CEO. The CEO has emphasized on the inclusion of employees from different backgrounds with the aim of using the ideas and innovative options that are provided to them (Ribeiro & Fleith, 2018).
The examples of three major global organizations have been able to depict that leadership is able to play a key role in ensuring high levels of diversity and multiculturalism. The three global organizations namely, Google, Starbucks and Apple have used different strategies for the purpose of promoting diversity and multiculturalism in an effective manner. The development of proper training programs is considered to be the most effective process of proper management of levels of diversity and multiculturalism in the organizations. The leader of a diverse and multicultural team needs to be diversity compatible in nature, which will be helpful for the development of effective strategies to manage the team.
The development of trust and relationships is another recommendation that can be provided to the leaders in order to manage the multicultural teams. The leaders of diverse teams need to gain knowledge related to the differences that are present between the diverse team members. The levels of diversity can be reduced with the help of proper management by the leader of the organization. The leaders of diverse teams or organizations can be suggested that they need to understand and clarify the expectations that the members or the employees have from the leaders and the management of the organization as well.
Reflection related multiculturalism in an organization
The levels of the diversity and multiculturalism are considered to be major parts of the global organizations that operate in the industry. The example of an organization that is quite familiar to me and has been able to maintain diversity and multiculturalism is Microsoft. The organization has focussed on making the workplace more inclusive and diverse in nature. The organization releases data that is related to the ways by which diversity is maintained every year by the leaders. The aim of diversity programs is related to the representation and inclusion of women in the workforce and in the leadership roles as well (Shuffler, Kramer & Burke, 2016). The women in the organization are being provided with technical roles and the percentage of people who are provided with leadership based positions have increased from 18.5% to 19.9%. The levels of diversity and multiculturalism in Microsoft are not able to compete with its competitors in the technology in the industry like, Amazon, Facebook and Apple (Soutphommasane, 2017).
Example of Apple: Embracing Diversity through Effective Leadership
Examples based on implementation leadership and management
The example of an organization which has not been able to depict high levels of diversity in the industry is Fonterra. The company has failed the equal employment opportunities based test. The strategy that has been developed and implemented by Fonterra is considered to be an important part of the organizational operations. The top management based team of Fonterra has not been able to develop strategies that are able to enhance the diversity and multicultural team members as well (Starren, 2016). Women have not been provided with positions in top management team of Fonterra. This is considered to be a major issue that has affected the operations of the organization. The leadership related activities that have been performed in Fonterra are also not able to affect the diversity and multicultural operations of the organization as well (Viitala, Kultalahti & Kangas, 2017).
Conclusion
The essay can be concluded by stating that leadership is able to play a major role in the ways by which the diversity and multicultural activities in the organization can be increased. The multicultural activities in the organization are important for increasing the innovation levels. The major global organizations are thereby able to operate in a profitable manner with the help of proper diversity in the activities and multicultural operations as well. The leaders are the most important part of the organizations who can maintain the diversity and the multicultural employees as well.
