Project management methodologies are utilised with the motive to handle project requirements. This are utilized to determine and provide a proper strategy which can help in meeting the target. There are different types of project management methodologies which were introduced with the perspective to achieve the project target. Different project requires different methodology. As a result, the need to identify the most suitable project management methodology becomes very crucial (Pace, 2019). The key considerations which are taken into account before selecting project management methodology are cost and budget, team size, ability to handle risk, flexibility, and timeline and stakeholder collaboration. The widely used project management methodologies are listed below:
- Waterfall methodology: Waterfall methodology is considered as the most traditional approach in project management. These focuses on conducting different phases in a linear or a sequential manner. Each stage of the project is completed before the next stage (Mandel, 2020). The suitable projects for the project management methodology are project with clearly defined goal, has an analysis of stakeholders and offers consistent and predictable project execution.
- Agile methodology: Agile Project management methodology is considered as one of the growing project management methodologies in the fields of software development project. The concept of agile project management is to offer collaborative, quick and open to data driven change (Malik, Ahmad & Hussain, 2019). Agile project management methodology is not suitable for the project which cannot able to afford the changes at the time of a project execution.
- Scrum methodology: Scrum methodology is a form of project management methodology. This is more like a framework which will last about 1 to 2 weeks. Projects which are organised by small teams utilises the scrum methodology (Hasibovi? & Tanovi?, 2019). Scrum methodology is best suitable for the project which requires continuous improvement. However, the project which does not get necessary support and effort from the team members cannot use scrum methodology.
- PRINCE 2 methodology: Prince 2 methodology is a process-based method which helps in having effective project management. With the help of a PRINCE 2 methodology, better way of handling projects can be obtained. The utilisation of prince 2 methodology principle in delivering the desired output. The main advantage which is offered with the PRINCE 2 methodology is the ability to communicate with the key stakeholders.
In order to successfully carry out a project, the need to select proper project management methodologies is important. It is important for every project manager to understand the requirement associated with the project which will help in achieving the project target and the scope. The expansion of a transitional training business is going to be carried out. It is expected that the utilisation of the target. In order to successfully carry out the project execution, project manager needs PRINCE 2 methodology on project as compare to the other approaches (Matos & Lopes, 2013). This project management methodology is considered as a mix of a project management methodologies which is capable of responding to unique aspects of project environment. In order to deliver the project within the estimated time frame and the budget, it is very important to understand the way going to deliver the outputs. Prince2 process ensures that a proper establishment of methodologies are being carried out so that it can deliver the required output.
- Continued business justification: The first principle of prince 2 methodology stated that there may be several cases where project fails to achieve the target. If the project manager at the beginning analyses them, then it will become very easy to achieve the target (Mousaei & Javdani, 2018). The need to state the project goals clearly, aligning with organisational strategies and managing project scope can help in reducing the chances of project failure. These will help in adding value towards the business and the way project execution is being carried out.
- Learn from experience: PRINCE 2 project management methodology devises principle which involves learning from previous projects. This helps in understanding the areas of concerns. With the help of this learning experience, it becomes easy to understand the reason due to which a project can fail. As a result, the need to gain a sufficient amount of knowledge from existing project becomes very important. This needs to be carried out at the beginning of project, then the project beginning and the end of the project.
- Roles and responsibilities: The need to identify and clearly state the rules and responsibilities associated with each stakeholder of the project is very important. This helps in understanding the project requirements and also provides the opportunity to conduct the project efficiently (Esteki, Gandomani & Farsani, 2020). The different categories through which roles are differentiated within project are from business, users and vendors perspective. The project manager must focus on prioritising and analysing each stakeholder on the basis of their roles and responsibilities.
- Managed by stages: In case of PRINCE 2 principle, the project is divided into different management stages. As a result, the need to understand the end of each stage is very important. By the end of stages, assessment on the basis of project plan, compliance, and project risk and business justification can be carried out. This will provide with the ability to control project operation (Karaman & Kurt, 2015). The project manager must consider as the most important component for project execution.
- Managing by exception: the project board is responsible for making tolerance for project managers so that they can carry out the project efficiently. It is important to identify exceptions so that it can be approved by the board. The board is responsible for deciding whether to approve or not approve of the identified exception. The exception are further divided into cost, time, quality, scope, benefits and risk.
- Focus on products: PRINCE2 methodology focuses on product or services which are tangible or intangible. It is important to identify the input and output so that project can achieve the target. The two main series which is carried out while focusing on products include managing products and specialising products (Jamali & Oveisi, 2016). It is important to identify the deliverables associated with the customers so that proper management of product can be carried out.
- Tailored to suit the project: The project depends entirely on the requirements of the customers. These varies widely in terms of shapes, sizes and requirements. It is important for every project manager to align the team strength, size, and risk and project environment together so that necessary output can be delivered. It is important to clearly state the project initiation document so that project the functioning can be achieved.
After identifying the different project management methodologies, it can be stated that PRINCE 2 project management methodology is the most suitable and reliable for the ongoing project. It is expected that the utilisation of prince 2 methodology will help in understanding the needs of this key stakeholders (Islam & Evans, 2020). The selection of prince2 methodology helps in understanding the key stakeholders who are going to contribute towards the project execution process. After analysing the project needs it can be clearly observed that the reallocation of the organisation to a new location need proper analysis of the place. Once the site is being evaluated, then it becomes easier to design and introduce the proper strategies. The research carried out provides with the ability to ensure that the project is able to achieve the target with the selection of PRINCE 2. The advantages which are expected to be offered with the selection of PRINCE 2 methodology at the time of project execution are discussed below:
- Best practice: prince 2 methodology is the best practice as this is capable of providing better way of understanding stakeholders need, project goals and objectives and the relation between each stakeholder.
- Offers a strong communication channel: With the help of prince to methodology, promotion of better communication can be achieved. This creates better opportunity and it helps in obtaining the expected output within time (Jovanovic & Beric, 2018).
- Better accountability: PRINCE 2 methodology offers better accountability towards the project execution. This helps in defining roles and responsibilities in and much more efficient manner. As per the project needs, it can be observed that the project managers is able to handle project responsibilities efficiently.
- Business focused: The function of transitional training Ltd business needs a proper establishment of a business needs. The selection of prince 2 methodology helps in staying focused towards a particular project. The utilisation of the methodology helps in understanding and identifying the underlying requirements associated with the business (McGrath & Whitty, 2020). Therefore, it can be stated that the selection of the methodology contribute to words the better development of the project.
- Better decision making: Prince 2 methodology offers better decision making capabilities. As the project is carried out over a large scale, the need to keep stakeholders aware of the ongoing process is very important. The utilization of appropriate decision making process helps in achieving the target.
- Offers great control: Prince 2 methodology is developed with the perspectives to Offer great control towards the project execution. While carrying out a particular project the need to have a control over each phase is very important. These helps in achieving the target associated with the project. Therefore, it can be stated that the need to understand the prince 2 methodology is very important for carrying out the project successfully.
Prince 2 Methodology offers different processes which helps in executing the operations efficiently. The different processes associated with PRINCE 2 are as follows:
- Starting up a project
- Initiation of project
- Directing project
- Controlling stage
- Management of stage boundaries
- Managing product delivery
- Closing a project
Prince 2 also provides into the insight off project execution. This are thought as knowledge areas. The 7 themes of prince 2 project management methodologies are discussed below:
- Business case: The theme offers with the knowledge associated with project. It becomes easy to achieve operations with development of proper business case.
- Organization: The theme is related to defining roles and responsibility principle.
- Quality: The focus of the theme is to relate and focus on products principle.
- Plans: The focus is to develop a target which will be addressed by the end of project execution by focusing on products, quality, timescale and cost.
- Risk: With the help of the theme it becomes easy to identify, assess and control uncertain events at the time of project.
- Change: The theme offers the project manager with the ability to handle change request and issues which arises at the time of project.
- Progress: This theme of PRINCE 2 is responsible for tracking the progress of project. Project managers will be able to control the relative plan.
