Utopian Worlds are not necessarily the most ideal state to live in for many reasons. A utopian world is a perfect world which every thing is under control even the most basic human rights and their privacies do not exist in it. The lack of choices is one of the main reasons that make a utopian world not an ideal place to live in.
Also with people that lack of knowledge and the lack of privacies. According to “The Giver” by Lois Lowry and “Pleasantville” directed by Gary Ross, they all show the audience that a utopian world is not the most ideal place to live in.
The lack of choice makes the utopian world not the most idea place to live in. Firstly, every children living in the city have the same thing. There is no discrimination or race. Every child owes the same thing which makes them all the same hence there is no individuality. Every child are assigned a bicycle when they are 9 and a job which suites them the most at 12 and they all took place in a auditorium announced by the elders ( Page 45 & 50 ) “Now Father sat beside mother in the audience.
Jonas could see them applauding dutifully as the Nines, one by one, wheeled their new bicycles…” and “Now Jonas group had taken a new place in the Auditorium, trading with the new elevens, so that they sat in the very fount immediately before the stage” Every one is assigned a bicycle when they are nine and a job or assignment when they are 12.
No one is allowed to choose their future or even their biological parents which is the most basic human rights and the community took it from them which lead them to no individuality and opinion. The lack of choices is a vital reason inside a utopian world or community.
Otherwise citizens live within the community will start to be suspicious that the rule they live with are not the best rules for them and they will start complaining. Then they will turn the utopian world upside down into an anti-utopian world. And that is what the community do not want, so they have to decide everything for them even their jobs, parents and name. The lack of choice also represent that the most basic human rights and having the own opinion is vital to them. If the community or the utopian world eliminates these needs, that is why the lack of opinion is one of the many main reasons that make the utopian world is the most ideal place to live in. Furthermore In the movie “Pleasantville”, people also can not have their own choice and what they are all doing is according to the scrip which is they won’t do another thing until someone or something give them a signal. For the scene is from: During the movie, when Bud went to the canteen to work, he found out that Mr. Johnson was cleaning the table. “When Bud got into the shop, Mr. Johnson found out that he was still cleaning the table because Bud was late.
Usually when Bud came in he will finished clearing the table while Bud was setting the table up, he will go and make the burgers. Bud was late and no one gave him the signal to do another thing, he keeps on wiping the table and some paint came off. When Bud came in, he was stunned and he had no idea what he was doing. Because Bud was late, he did give him the signal to make the burgers because that is not they usually do and the boss has no idea how to react. A close up shot was used to let the audience to have a close look at the paint that Mr. Johnson wipe off while he was waiting for Bud. Without telling us what had happen, The director choose to let us see the result of Bud being late and the point that all the people that is living in Pleasantville are all working according to the scrip and they have no idea what they should do when something does not go according to it.
When things start not going according to the scrip, People from Pleasantville do not know how to react. This is important because if things do not go under the plan, utopian will turn into chaos that something is going to go wrong and the scrip would not. By looking at the book, “Giver” and the film “Pleasantville”, both of them precents the negative things about a utopian world. In the Book Giver, Jonas is not allowed to ask any questions before he was assigned to be the receiver. Also Mr. Johnson from the burger store in the film Pleasantville, does not know how to react when things are not according to scrip, this shows us that they isn’t that they can’t do it but is they don’t know what to do, which also proves us that they can not have their own opinion. Both the book “Giver” and the film “Pleasantville” prove the lack of opinion is one of the main reasons that a utopian world is not necessarily the most ideal place to live.
Also the lack of knowledge is one of the main reasons that make the utopian world not the most ideal place to live in. Firstly in the book, Jonas knows nothing about the community. He goes to school pointlessly, until he is twelfth and gets allocated for a task or assignment. On the other hand, if Jonas was not assigned to be the receiver, he will know nothing about the community and knowledge therefore he will live pointlessly.
When Jonas has his first lesson with the previous receiver, he notices something about colour. Something different to his friend’s hair. Then today, just now, outside, it happened with my friend Fiona. She herself didn’t change, exactly. But something about her changed for a second. Her hair looked different. After Jonas went to the giver for a few times, he starts to see something beyond which is colour. The community did not teach Jonas or other people about colour because they are afraid that discrimination would happen between them. If people start to see colour, discrimination might occur and that will spread all over the community which make it not prefect anymore. The community can not change the genetic code within the human body, so there is difference between everybody. By not teaching or telling their citizen about colour, they will not notice the odds.
Which will keep the utopian world functioning. The lack of knowledge makes the utopian world not an ideal place to live in because the community choose what to teach their citizen. And they choose it because it will make their work easier. Furthermore in Pleasantville, Mary Sue taught her mother about sex which apparently her mother knows nothing about sex and relaxing. Mary told her mother about sex when she got home. Her mother was listening with a lot of curiosity. Mary Sue told her mother about sex and how to relax. The lack of opinion makes the Pleasantville world not an ideal place to live in because they did not consider their citizen’s will. They choose what they should know about instead of putting their destination on other people else.
Those two texts both taught us about that knowledge is not a thing that everyone can choose to know about in a utopian world. Moreover, they did not stand a chance to choose what they want to know because they know nothing besides what the community had taught them which makes this utopian world not the most ideal place to live in.
Finally the lack of privacy also makes the utopian world not the most ideal state to live in. Firstly In the book “The Giver”, all the citizen living in the community have no real privacy. Doors is just a furniture or to make the house more dissent instead keeping people out who wants to come in before Jonas are assigned to the receiver, no doors use to have lock. When Jonas first arrived his working place with the present receiver, his assistant need to unlock the door to let Jonas In which is a very new thing to Jonas. She Smiled, pushed a button, and he heard a click that unlock the door on her left. “You may go right on in,” she told him. Then she seemed to notice his discomfort and to realize its origin. No doors in the community were locked, ever. None that Jonas knew about. Doors are meant to keep the people living in the house safe and keep the strangers outside and have their own privacy.
Moreover, as Jonas was thinking, No doors in the community were locked, every. None of that he knew of. Which means the citizen living in that community are already used to the environment without privacies. The point of privacy is that people can keep what they are doing to themselves or to have secretes. Because it is a utopian world, no one have secretes or privacy. No one has something to hide from the community. They are live not to lie; they are live with doors without locks. This is how the people in that community grow up with so they are unaware of lies, theft and privacies. The lack of privacy is one of the main reasons that make the utopian world not the most ideal place to live in. Furthermore, the movie “Pleasantville” also proofs that the lack of privacies is one of the main reasons that make it not the most ideal environment to live in. when Bud and his friend started to turn into colour, they need to hide form the others. The others crash the burger store, destroy the painting. Finally they make up some rules for the coloured people and the black & white people.
Every thing is restricted, even the music that they want to listen, or the book they want to read. Bud got the notice from the officer of the rule to agree about living together. Due to any reasons, privacies should remain and belong to everyone else in the world. That shows that the officer want to take control of every thing else and keep it the same when it first started. So he decided to eliminate people’s privacy. In the book “The Giver” and the Film “Pleasantville”, they all provide evidence that the lack of privacy is one of the main reason that make a utopian world not the most ideal place to live in. In the book, all doors Jonas knew about were not locked and in the film, people are limited to listen to the certain music. The two text both bring out the same massage that privacies is vital to human
Because they both put the community’s future before the citizen’s instead of the other way around. Both the book and the film show us that because of the lack of privacy also make the utopian world not the most ideal place to live in
The utopian world is not the most ideal place to live in for many reasons, the lack of choice, the lack of knowledge and finally the lack of privacies. These are only few of the main reasons that make the utopian world not the most ideal place to live in. To be general, it is because the community eliminate the most basic human rights, of the citizen the choices that people want to make, the knowledge that people want to learn about and the secrets that people want to keep to themselves.
Although a utopian world might look perfect because there are not conflict going on, every one is successful, no worries. On the other hand, we must consider the things that you have to sacrifice if you want to live in a utopian world. The choice all depends on you and to make the own choice that is the best to yourselves.
