On August 28, 2008, a flood occurred in a place located in North India in a small state by the name of Bihar. Though Bihar had several floods that they had faced, this was the most tragic flood they ever encountered. “Officials said the situation in Bihar was “not alarming” but this water could inundate villages and farms if the dam across the border suddenly broke.”(Thousands evacuated over), this shows how this flood isn’t certainly important but if the dam were to break this would be more disastrous than it currently is.
Even after the flood, they had a major drought for about 2 years following with many more floods, which they had a tough time surviving in. Also, they had an earthquake also following with many floods. During the flood, many died and many were wounded also feared of what was going to happen, later on, many also went missing after this flood. Roughly 2,000 died in the flooding, and it affected approximately 2.
3 million people in about 16 districts. About six military helicopters were sent and came to rescue the people. Also, medical equipment was being transmitted as well. Many people living near the rivers or anywhere near large quantities of water were relocated to shelters. The flood demolished many homes. “Although 400,000 people have been moved to relief camps, ActionAid says people have been forced to drink unsafe water, with growing fears about water-borne diseases such as diarrhea.” (Ramesh) This states how much people have faced and been through during this period. The people of Bihar or any country was not to blame for this incident.
The judicial commitment revealed that the flood was actually originated by the Kosi river. No one truly resolved this problem they did go to camps for safety and shelter. Many people never tried to prevent the flood from occurring, but they did attempt to get rid of the flood. “The Nepalese army carried out controlled explosions to knock down part of the earth wall, allowing some water to flow out but much of it remained trapped.” (Thousands evacuated over), this shows how they tried to do something to end the flood but never succeeded. Once the flood calmed down several just wandered around in the water and went back to their regular lifestyle the water only reaching their waists. And many were still recovering at the shelter that was provided from that devastating flood. And many injured were recovering in the camps. The people who have died were adults, children, and many more, but they could still be out there somewhere still alive. Nobody knows where the people who disappeared went, but let’s hope that they’re still alive somewhere and living.
