Functionalities Of The Oral b Braun 5000 Electric Toothbrush
The Oral B Braun 5000 electric toothbrush has Bluetooth app and includes a travel case that packs the brush handle, charger, and brush heads for up to 4 people. The package comes with a user manual and a smart guide. The toothbrush and smart guide are described in details in the next sections under functionalities. The toothbrush and the smart guide works well to help the physically challenged persons who need to maintain their dental hygiene on their own. It is important for the working class as it helps them save on time while cleaning their teeth. The effects of using this toothbrush are evident as the brush lifts off the plaque which causes yellowing of the teeth.

The toothbrush has a brush handle and brush head. The brush handle has a smart screen which interacts and synchronizes with the smart guide. The toothbrush is used in brushing teeth and it has flossing capabilities as well.
The toothbrush handle is waterproof and this feature ensures that the electrical components of the toothbrush are intact. The toothbrush head is wet in the sink and paste is applied on to it in preparation for brushing. The brush handle is fitted to the brush head using an adhesive band to ensure it does not slip out.
The brush is powered on and guided slowly from one tooth to the next for each quadrant to ensure cleaning is effective. It is recommended for a user to clean the teeth from the outsides to the insides and then the top chewing parts. Unfortunately, some users tend to bleed the first time they interact with the brush but after sometime they get used to it and set the brush modes to their desired modes.
Some of the common brushing modes available for this electric toothbrush are daily clean, deep clean, sensitive mode, whitening mode, gum care mode, and tongue cleaning mode. Usually when cleaning the tongue, the user sets the tooth brush to sensitive mode.
The brush is keen to notice any pressure anomalies from the normal prescribed pressure. This occurs when a user applies too much force on the toothbrush while brushing. The toothbrush notices that using the pressure sensor and sends red indicator signals to the brush alerting the user to reduce the pressure. Too much pressure could be a cause of bleeding especially for the sensitive areas of the mouth such as the tongue area and gum area.

Another key component of the toothbrush is the timer. There are two modes namely the professional timer and the 2-minute timer. These are usually set on the user’s preference for instance the daily clean mode requires a user to brush their teeth for about 30 seconds for each quadrant while the professional mode would require up to 45 seconds. This is common especially if the deep clean mode has been activated. The figure below shows the SmartScreen on the toothbrush and the display on time and radio connectivity feature.
- Daily Clean– The standard mode
- Deep Clean– Increases timer to 3 minutes clean (45 seconds/quarter)
- Sensitive– Gentler mode for sensitive teeth and gums
- Whitening– Cycles through low and high-powered bursts
- Massage– Cycles through low and high-powered bursts
The smart guide is part of the toothbrush and it demonstrates the setting of a user as well as the timer. The guide comes with a demonstration mode activated. The user needs to change the mode by resetting the toothbrush to set their own time based on their preferred brushing mode.
The smart guide is keen on indicating the brushing mode of a user, it tells when too much pressure has been applied while brushing, it reminds the user to move from one dental quadrant to another after the set time and it informs the user if the charge is running low.
The smart guide indicates the format of brushing head as either the oscillating rotatory brushing of the brush head for the active brushing mode. There are two distinct categories namely:
- Oral-B Floss-Action brush head; it features micro pulse bristles that allow for an outstanding plaque removal in the interdental areas.
- Oral-B Cross-Action brush head; it is a very advanced type of brush head that cleans all the angles of the tooth and lifts away the plaque.
There is a feature that monitors the state of the brush bristles to enable proper recommendation for a new brush head when the current one has already been used. The Smart Guide part of the toothbrush connects with the SmartScreen on the smart phone to save the data collected. The smartphone ought to support the Bluetooth 4.0 or higher versions so as to enable radio frequency connectivity (Mohammadi, Afshar, Haizamani, & Tayebi, 2011).. Once the toothbrush handle is powered and the SmartScreen or Oral-B app is powered on, the toothbrush connects to the app. The smart guide controls the display section as well as the indicator. The user selects the brushing mode of their choice. When the toothbrush detects that the user is applying so much pressure on the gums, teeth or tongue while cleaning, it sends a warning indicator light (Oral-B, 2017)
System modelling assists the analyst to understand the functionality of the system and models that are used to communicate with customers. There are different models that can be used to represent various perspectives of the systems. Some show the external perspective which captures the system’s context or environment, others show the behavior of the system and others show the system or data architecture. This report is interested in the system behavior of the Oral B Braun 5000 electric toothbrush and smart guide. It is crucial to highlight that the system models may not capture the non-functional system requirements, may not include information about whether a method is appropriate for a given problem, may have too much documentation, and it requires trained personnel to generate system models that are comprehendible.
Choice Of Software
State charts are used in the analysis state of system modelling and in the design. The state charts are useful in describing the system behavior of business systems as well as product systems. The exercise seeks to develop state chart diagrams for the system or product and ensure the coordination of all the entities. The state charts design the behavior of the system, they can be very complex with nested states within other states as well as the use of the multiple parallel concurrent states. The state charts are useful to help design an object’s method logic. A state machine that describes the response of an object of a given class to the receipt of the outside stimuli or events. Another technique used to model the system behavior is the activity diagram. The state transition diagrams illustrated below show the system response to events hence defining the system’s behavior.
The system responds to both internal and external events. They show the system’s responses to stimuli and can be used to model the real-time systems. The models show the system states as nodes and the events as arcs between these nodes. When an event occurs, the system moves from one state to another. It is a crucial part of the UML. It is important to highlight that the state machines do not demonstrate the flow of data in the system.
The state charts allow the decomposition of a model into sub-models and it is followed by a brief description in the “do/” section. It can be complemented by tables describing the states and the stimuli. The figures above have used the technique in the system modelling exercise. The state is an abstraction of the attributes of a class and the aggregation of several attributes in a class and has a duration. It is recommended that when the batteries are used up, the user should dispose them at the national electronic disposal point in their region to avoid environmental pollution. The users need to ensure that the brush is handled properly to avoid transmission errors and power losses.
Conclusion
This report has analyzed the functionalities of the Oral B Braun 5000 Electric toothbrush and the Smart guide. It analyzed in depth the software methodology techniques used in the Unified modelling language. The technique used in this report is the state machine, specifically, the state transition diagrams. The paper describes the procedure used in brushing the teeth and the connection to the SmartScreen App. The state transition diagram for both the toothbrush and SmartScreen have been well demonstrated using Microsoft Visio 2013.
