Theoretical Perspective of Globalization
1.Examine an area of UK government policy impacted by globalization and how it also connects with a social group of your choice.
2.Analyse the implications of this for practitioners and service users ‘on the ground’ where the global and the local meet each other.
3.Conceptualise a report on policy and practice through the lens of a theoretical perspective of your choice drawn from globalisation studies.
Globalization has become one of the most popular topics of today. It is not only limited only to the contemporary social science but also it is able to leave greater impact on the wider political, social and economic aspects in this modern world. But the problem is that still there are conflicts on this topic and has no clear views from the different part of the social groups. But it can be idealized that globalization is there to represent the universal integration of international trade, venture, required information, technology and culture. On the other words, it can get said that globalization is about a trend through which modern people and business organisations are enjoying adding ease of better communication on a worldwide scale
1.Theoretical Perspective of Globalization: Globalization is not a small aspect and it cannot get accelerated with the support of respected government. Actually, it is noticed that the responsible government play vital role when it comes to enabling fair globalization for the people of nation. At the first move, government pours attention on making fair policies, so that all the people regardless of the economic and social status can avail the potential benefits of globalization regime (Berger and Esguerra, 2017). The second but most important thing is that in order to support globalization, the government implements flexible labor laws and ensure that the labors are getting equal benefits and rights. But according to the assignment criteria, evaluating the impacts of globalization on a particular social group is important in order to understand the wider concept of globalization. In order to align the assignment with the criteria, it has chosen immigrant workers as that particular social group. (Steger, 2017)
Generally, the United Kingdom government puts greater attention to the social works. And in order to support the regime, it has implemented a lot of legislation and laws. But the impact of globalization has leave strong impact on the social work regime in the United Kingdom (McCann, 2016). Actually, it is noticed that since the late 1980s this regime is getting affected due to continuous change. And it directly impactsthe organisational structure, value base and even the service users. Due to such rapid changes the scope of social work literature is getting narrowed day by day (Campbell and Chollier, 2018). Along with these, the delivery of policy and services issues also gets affected. Actually, it is a common fact that when the topic is wider rather the area is wider then automatically a lot of factors take place and leave impact on all the related regimes. And this is also applicable in the governmental policy of social work in the United Kingdom. (Oliver, 2017)
UK Government Policy and Social Work
Social Group: The chosen social group is immigrant workers in the United Kingdom. A lot of people are working in the social care organisations and a large number of employees are of the immigrant workers. So the rapid changes in this area within a short time also impacted their life style, working regime and other related factors on a great level. In the next lines, how globalization both directly and indirectly affecting the particular social group, the immigrant workers is discussed in an appropriate manner.
In search of a better career objective, a large number of people on a regular basis apply on the social care organisation from all across the world (Wright, 2016). The government also puts close attention on this aspect and it can get best understood through the governmental policies (Walker, 2015). On the other words, it can get said that more than 160 Million people need to leave the home country and settled in another for the purpose of better job. And globalization leaves impact on this regime in a deeper level, although there are very few countries which remained untouched from the globalization effects.
Critically evaluating the policies:
Immigration is not a fragile issue rather it leave greater impact on the regime of the United Kingdom. Actually, there is a prominent fact and that is due to a lot of factors, the number of immigrated workers is getting increased and the increased number of immigrant workers leaves impact on this nation. In order to control the entire fact the government has implemented immigration controls and rules in order to protect the borders and overall regime in the United Kingdom. The government has implemented the rules and laws based on four groups of immigrant people such as tourists, students, entrepreneurs and the people who prefer to work in the United Kingdom.
Immigrant workers are also considered as a part of United Kingdom’s labor market and globalization has direct connection with the labor market. On the other words, it can get said that globalization plays a vital role when it comes to shaping the labor market of the United Kingdom. (Mikalauskiene et al, 2016)
Actually, it is noticed that globalization, one of the most popular fact of modern world carry many social and economic dynamics. And the immigrant working regime can also be accepted as a part of this. But understanding the exact impact of globalization on migration is important. In the earlier section, it was mentioned that globalization is an idea of circulating goods, people and capital in accordance with greater pace in the politics. In the modern era of globalization, it is noticed that the fact of international migration is not limited to quantitative aspect rather it reached to qualitative aspect too. The regime of globalization has just invoked the mobility and reached it in a greater level (Czaika and Haas, 2014).
Chosen Social Group: Immigrant Workers
If the assignment closely focuses on the globalizations issues which have invoked the migration regime then a lot of factors will take place. Globalization and economic of a nation rather the international economy regime is closely connected. On the other words, most of the globalization theories indicate the economic factor as a responsible factor for increasing arte of migration in all across the world (Martínez, 2017). According to the scholars, economic factors are there to influence the migration patterns in deeper levels. For instance, it can be said that, all the leading business organisations hire employees from different nations in order to get quality approved task. But when it comes to the employees then the economic factor rather the scope of better job position and sound salary hike attract them to leave the home country and settle in a foreign country. This is applicable in the immigrant workers of United Kingdom in a greater level. Actually, United Kingdom is the nation where a lot of leading business organisations are accelerating the business regime and hiring qualified employees from various parts of the world.
There are a lot of other factors too which has influenced the immigrant workers to settle in the United Kingdom. according to a recent research there are a large number of workers who have leave their home country and settled in the United Kingdom just to avail greater opportunity for all the aspects such as education, treatment, territory advancement and so on. The passage is short in order to light up all the related factors which have provoked the immigrant workers to settle down in the United Kingdom but most important factors are mentioned and discussed.
2.It is an all accepted fact that globalization has shaped all the related facts such as political, cultural, social and cultural relationship within a nation. And presently it is acting as an unstoppable force and leave greater impact on the social care organisations. In the earlier section, it is mentioned that in order to work in the social care organisation of the United Kingdom, every year a lot of people come to the United Kingdom and this is another great reason which is increasing the number of immigrant workers in this nation. According to the syllabus, the conceptual and empirical dimensions of globalization differ from each other. On the other words, it is a common fact that the theoretical concept and the practical concept always differ from each other and it is just same in the case of globalization (Newland, 2017). In order to understand the entire facts of globalization noting down the practical examples and survey results is important. The concept of globalization comes with some basic characteristics and through which the difference between national requirement and global requirement gets prominent. Economic activity, liberalism, privatization, collaborations, economic reforms and other dimensions are accepted as the characteristics which come which the greater concept of globalization. And all of these have the ability to leave impact on the setting of work regime off the immigrant workers in the United Kingdom. Actually, the concept encourages the mentioned social group when it comes to fiscal and financial reforms rather it offers a view of free world trade and fair market and labor policy for all the immigrant workers. (Dobrowolsky, 2016)
Critically Evaluating the Policies
The nature of migration has been transformed entirely by the tidal waves of globalization. Immigrant workers are largely affected by the globalization. With the help of globalization, the communication system has improved a lot, paving way for a better and a more outlined structure of life for immigrant workers (McGowan and Keith, 2016). Dissemination of information through mass media and development in the transport system has affected the immigrant workers in a great way. As it is known that occupation is the primary driving force working behind migration, UK is a hub of immigrant workers coming from different parts of the world to earn their bread and butter (Back, 2015). As the intensive network and interconnections, resulting from globalization is slowly transcending the national as well as international borders; the lives of immigrant workers are becoming better and more structured.
Globalisation has made the world a close knit place, most importantly introduced digitalization in a better and unique way. With globalization, immigrant workers are not facing difficulty in entering the country and continue their livelihood. Also, globalization has initiated migration in United Kingdom, resulting into a growing rate of immigrant workers in the country. Since migration has become an easier process, the free and smooth movement of labours from different countries has helped United Kingdom to develop their economy (Geddes and Scholten, 2016). As the immigrants are filling the job vacancies in United Kingdom, the country is being benefitted by the way globalisation has affected the social group of immigrant workers.
Globalisation is a worldwide affair by which all the countries have been affected, including the different social groups (Coyle, 2016). Immigrant workers are a significant social group and globalization has affected their lives in various aspects. Globalisation has got different element involved with it.
- International capital flow
- Flow of images, values, information and concepts through media and communications
- Global integration of activities related to business
- Individualism and consumerism spreading globally
- Impact of human activities on global ecology and overall environment
- International mobility of people for different purposes and also mobility of ideas
- Rise of government and private organization
- Cross-border political actions
- Consciousness of public regarding global events, issues and threats.
As the sixth point mentioned above suggests, it can be said that globalization initiates international mobility of people for leisure or work. Hence, it can be assessed that gloablisation has positive impact on the lives of immigrant workers. Immigrant workers are now seamlessly carrying out their jobs in United Kingdom, all because of currently implemented policies for the respective social group. These policies are largely influenced by the occurrence of globalization. The immigrant workers are being benefitted by these newly implemented policies which are paving their way to enter a smooth professional life while living in United Kingdom (Turnbull, 2016). Development in communication system is a crucial part of globalization and therefore, most of the hindrances faced by immigrant workers in the country are reduced to a greater extent. Both nationally and internationally, the immigrant workers are seeing a better prospect and positively appreciating the facilities coming in their part with globalization
Globalization Shaping the Labor Market and Migration
3.Globalization, being one of the key concepts of twenty first century, has impacted the lives of social groups present in various countries across the world (Pakulski and Markowski, 2014). While talking about globalization and its different aspects, few points should be kept in mind:
1) The social change and global transformation have become first-paced with implications for various dimensions of social life and human culture,
2) This social change is a result of increasing amount of connectivity among people belonging from different communities, classes and religions.
Based on the above-mentioned contexts, the scholars have introduced a number of theories related to the globalization and its impact on social groups (Bovens and Wille, 2017). There are a number of relevant theories, which deeply criticizes the impact of globalization on the lives of the respective social group – immigrant workers. In the context of this social group, the theories of transnationality and transnationalism are most the most relevant one to gain deeper understanding regarding this subject (Celi and Testa, 2016). The theory elaborates how the study of larger cities can identify the spatial relations of transnationalized people living there. The theory deals with two dimensions; one is rise of new communities and formation of new social identities which cannot be defined by the traditional nation-states reference point. The other dimension is denoting a range of social, political and cultural practices and an increased connectivity among various states across borders.
A set of overall findings:Transnationalism refers to an umbrella in the context of globalization, which encompasses a variation of transformative processes, developments and practices that take place simultaneously at both global and local level. Transnational processes and practices are defined as the multiple interactions and ties which consist of social, economic, political and cultural. People hailing from different communities and institutions across the borders of nation-states are linked by these factors. As per the immigration studies, transnationalism refers to the activities done by immigrants to sustain multi-stranded social relations which links their societies of origin and settlement as a single and unique field of social aspect. With the help of innovative improvement in transportation and communications, the density and intensity of links between the country of origin and of settlement has become much easier and seamless now. Immigrant workers can be connected to their roots while earning their bread and butter in another country, can be connected to their families living in their origin country. This practice emerging from globalization has enabled these communities to live simultaneously in two or more countries or to balance their personal and professional lives. With the help of this practice, shift from international migration to transnational migration, and these communities have started being referred as transnational communities. The accelerating paces of economic, cultural and institutional globalization have influenced the lives of the immigrant workers living in United Kingdom.
Factors Influencing Immigrant Workers to Settle in UK
As the United Kingdom is moving fast towards a better and developed future with the help of globalization, the seamless mobility of labour has resulted into a rapid flow of immigrant workers in the country (Cheliotis, 2015). As the immigrant workers can be easily connected to their families living far away with the help of advancement in the field of networking and connectivity, more immigrants are changing their countries in order to earn more. The larger countries are having better future prospect and better income level as well, thus the immigrant workers are being interested in crossing borders to make their future better. Hence, transnationality and transnationalism have become two eminent factors after the entrance of globalization in the different countries of world (Dower and Williams, 2016). Transnationalism is beyond the social discriminations based on gender, class, race vice versa. It is a more specified subject which highlights how the lives of the immigrant workers irrespective of their class, race and gender, have been affected by the globalization and its related factors. Thus, the theories of transnationality and transnationalism have influenced the lives of immigrant workers after the globalization took place and changed the entire scenario of world economy.
Conclusion
Globalisation is a much-anticipated subject and the world is still experiencing the effects of the same. From developed to developing countries, all are under the spell of globalization and the positive effects involved with it. The countries are facing massive change in their economy which is a direct or indirect result of globalization around the world. Different social groups are affected from this. In this report, a specific social group is discussed i.e. immigrant workers. The immigrant workers are an integral part of world economy as the world economy is being fueled by the massive contribution in workplace provided by the immigrant workers. The immigrant workers have been immensely benefitted by the current policies of United Kingdom in context of globalization (Kaur, 2018). The policies have eased the lives of the numerous immigrant workers living in United Kingdom. Better communications and transport system, resulted from globalization, has reduced the problems faced by immigrant workers in United Kingdom in a greater extent. Thus, this social group has been benefitted immensely.
This report is based on UK government policies related to social groups in the context of globalization. As we all know globalization has hit the world, the foundation of the world economy is shaken. Everything is changing for a greater good. Social groups are being positively affected by these policies. While preparing this report, I took the help of concept more than detailed statistics as determining the overall progress of the chosen group i.e. immigrant workers in UK is not possible just by solely depending upon the data. I was able to draw out a desirable outcome with the help of concepts as well. Thus, more availability of detailed statistics regarding this topic could have helped me to deliver a more fulfilling report
