• The Germans attempted to outflank the allies and capture the port cities so as to stop British reinforcements and supplies from reaching France.

• The British made a stand at Ypres; this was the first battle of Ypres (19th October – 22nd November 1914):

Results of the Battle:

• The BEF was destroyed as they sustained 50 000 casualties with 8 000 deaths.
