Effect of COVID-19 on Traditional Classrooms and Process of Learning
The question mainly talks about the impact that COVID-19 pandemic has had on the educational sphere. The main area of focus is on the way in which the entire educational sector went through a transformation where classes began to be held with the help of online platforms. The traditional classrooms were eliminated due to the lockdown that was imposed in order to curb the spread of the disease. This change in the way of teaching had impacted the experiences of university students with respect to the process of learning. The question that needs to be discussed will reflect on this shift. The searching of different resources around the given topic requires the use of several key words which can help in narrowing the vast area. While searching for peer reviewed articles and the book key words like ‘education system’, ‘COVID-19’ and ‘impact’ were used. These words were joined together by using the Boolean operator ‘and’. On the other hand, while searching for articles and blogs some additional key words were used. These key words included ‘change in secondary education’, ‘pandemic’, influence’, ‘how’ and ‘result’ were used. In order to join the series of words commas were used while searching.
The five sources were searched using a systematic search strategy. The key words were firstly identified from the given topic. In doing so, the main words that reveal the meaning of the topic were selected. The synonyms for the key words were identified and with the use of internet a range of articles and blogs were found. The most credible source was selected in this case. While searching for the book and the articles it was a similar strategy was implemented but at the same time the resource used by each were cross-checked in order to ensure authenticity and accuracy. While searching for the articles a wide range of articles had appeared which made it necessary to ensure that the articles which are most relevant and close to the topic in question is selected. The articles were mainly found using a range of search engines like Google Scholar and ProQuest were used where scholarly articles were used.
The book was selected after having read the abstract of the same. While searching for a relevant book, a number of books had appeared and in order to select the most accurate book, the abstract for each was read thoroughly only to choose by Reimers (2021). The graph that is presented was selected based on the understanding that it effectively demonstrates the change in the educational sector post the Covid-19 pandemic. The graph is selected after having gone through a number of resources in general. The graph which best demonstrates the changing scenario and the most simplistic way is used in this paper. The graph selection is also done based on the overall understanding of the paper and the graph that is being used in this case is also used keeping in check that it clearly presents the topic that is being covered in this paper.
Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health Issues in Students
The book by Reimers (2021) was selected after having closely evaluated the texted based on the relevance that this piece of work creates with respect to the main topic. The book reflects on the fact that the change in the educational sector that was brought about by the pandemic which had restricted the engagement of students in the learning process as they could no longer interact with their peers and it also completely eliminate the chances of individual attention. In addition, the use of online medium of education left with a disbalance in the educational and personal environment. The article by Aucejo et al. (2020) talks about the way in which the students who belong to lower economic backgrounds have suffered greatly due to the COVID-19 situation and many of them are seen to be taking longer time to graduate because of the pandemic. The cost of education increases because of the pandemic as compared to the traditional method of learning and while this does not directly affect the students who belong to economically stable background, it has a negative implication of students from lower-income family. Thus, a heterogenous effect can be seen in the student’s experience. Alsoud and Harasis (2021) talks about the way in which the hours of learning and studying have significantly decreased due to the online learning system in general. It is clearly brought to light that there are a range of disadvantages to this form of learning like the online learning sphere brough a range of issues with itself because most of the students had never been exposed to this form of learning before. E-learning had thus made distance learning a lot more efficient but it negatively effected the process of learning for the students who had been a part of traditional learning in general.
The news article published in The Daily Orange (2020) talks about the way in which the University students have been dealing with a feeling of anxiety and are also experiencing trauma in the new framework of online classes. With the COVID-19 pandemic making people stay within their houses, University students have to avail the option of online classes which has left with no physical contact with the teacher or their peers. The increase in the screen time has also led to the students feeling increasingly depressed and anxious mostly because they are left alone before the screen. The graph that is presented clearly shows the way in which the COVID-19 pandemic had adversely affected the mental health of the University students as they attend the online classes, which became mandatory post the recent pandemic. The initial rate of depression, anxiety and stress in students before the pandemic was much less before the pandemic but these rates have increased significantly post the pandemic situation. This is understood by comparing the bar graphs of the previous study and the present-day study. This increase is seen not just in one case but all stages of mental health issues.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been difficult on the entire human population in general but the educational sector underwent a complete change due to the responses to the COVID-19 situation. The universities across different countries were shutdown in order to ensure the safety of students and online mode of learning was incorporated which led to metal health issues among students (The Daily Orange, 2022). This paper will elaborate on the impact of this change led to mental health issues and lack of learning in students.
The COVID-19 pandemic made it mandatory for a lockdown to be imposed in order to restrict the spread of the virus among people. As a result of the lockdown the universities were shut down and the online mode of studying had to be implemented which meant that the entire way of teaching and learning had changed. This change in the educational system had also influenced the opportunity among students to learn. Those from low-income family background have shown to take longer to graduate due to lack of resources (Aucejo et al., 2020). Opportunities was influenced by the time available for the students to learn and the time that was needed for the students to learn in general.
The online learning system restricted the opportunity that was available to the students for interacting with their peers and teachers while also augmenting the amount of work that the students had to do which included both homework and the general chores that they carried out at their house (Reimers, 2021). This increased stress among the students and their work load in general also increased significantly. The student’s hours of learning have also decreased significantly post the pandemic situation. In the traditional teaching method, it was observed that the hours spent by students in the learning process was much more as compared to the time they spend in the learning process now (Alsoud and Harasis, 2021). In general, the mental health condition of students has become much worse due to the increased screen time and isolation which has impacted their learning experience (Refer to the graph).
It can thus be concluded that the responsive measures to the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted the university students. A sharp rise in the mental health issues have been witnessed while a decrease in the opportunities and engagement is observed.
The skills that were acquired while doing this entire assignment is firstly the researching skills. It helped me understand how graphs can be selected and used in a piece of work. Another acquired skill was understanding the topic. The skill of the ability to narrow down a broad topic and using search engine was acquired.
