Problem Statement
Discuss about the Impact of Managing Stress and Organizational Culture on employee and Company Performances at workplace: A Case Study on Google.
Organizational culture and Stress management are the two important elements in the success of modern business organizations. Organizational culture can be defined as a set of values and behaviors that contributes to the psychological and social environment of the organization (Doppelt, 2017). Culture represents the shared experiences, expectations, philosophy and values that the organization holds to reflect its self image. On the contrary, Stress management aims at controlling an individuals’ level of stress specifically chronic stress that occurs during the everyday business operations (Kangas and et.al., 2017). In the present business scenario, these two above mentioned terms have become a necessity in fulfilling the organizational goals. Organizational culture can be reflected in the stress level of the employee. A stress free employee will help the organization in improving its work culture and will contribute the most in fulfilling their goals. In this research project, case study of the Google is being taken into consideration to understand the organization culture and stress management.
Google is one of the leading company in the recent decades whose one of the most critical success factor is their people management. Google has an ability to manage their talented, creative and aggressive individuals and this has been the most important factor in the growth of the company and becoming the leader in the internet industry. The main aim of the project is to study the impact of stress management and organization culture on employee and company performance (Chitrakar, 2017). To understand the topic in brief, initially statement of problem is being mentioned that will be followed by research aims and objectives of the project. Once the objective is defined, justification and potential output of the project is being mentioned. Further, conceptual framework of the research is done that includes the Literature review of the study and after that Hypothesis are made. At the end, data is being collected for the Research methodology to arrive at conclusion or result of the study.
Organization culture and Stress management are highly interlinked with each other. Performance of an individual in influenced by various factors and one of the most important factor is the culture in which they carry their business operations. Performance of the employee have direct impact on the success of the organization (Chang and et.al., 2015). Work culture of the organization and stress that arises from that working conditions are two important elements that affects the performance of an employee in an organization. Without the contribution of human resources, no business can enhance their productivity and thus can not survive in the long run. Stress management is one of the key solution to improve an employee performance (Wright & Yaeger, 2016). Currently, businesses are growing at a rapid pace and it is important for the organization to provide a better and stress free life to their employees so that they can promote better exchange of ideas, cultures, ethics and behaviors. However, now days with the challenging business environment, workforce are constantly facing work stress at organizations. Thus, to achieve stress free work environment firm need to have an appropriate work culture so that they can bring out the most from their workforce. Although several studies have been done on organization culture and stress management but only few researchers have focused on the interconnection of these two terms (Leroy, Anseel, Gardner, & Sels, 2015). In this report, one of the leading internet industry Google is been considered as they employ a large number of people in their organization to fulfill their targets. Employees play an important role and therefore, this report will highlight the stress management and organization culture of the Google. Through this, it can be identified how the work culture and stress management can help the employee and company in enhancing their performance. This research can be also very useful for the business concerns as it focuses on employee performance (Lloyd, Bond & Flaxman, 2017). Through this, operations of multinational organization to satisfy their employee can be studied through Google. Further, this research will focus on the success of company due to work culture and managing stress.
Research Aims/Objectives And Research Questions
The aim of the research project is to understand the impact of Stress management and work culture on the performance of employee and organization. To achieve this aim, organization chosen is Google. In order to achieve this aim, below mentioned research questions can be taken into action:
- To study the organization culture and stress management applied on the employees working at Google.
- To study the impact of organization culture and stress management on the performance of Google.
- To inspect the presence of any gap in the stress management policy of the Google.
Organizational culture includes various factors that influence an individual to think, act, etc., Earlier study of the culture was being conducted to know the impact of culture of people and society on group activities. Recently, these studies have been extended to the studies of psychology, sociology, organizational behavior etc. However, with the rapid changes in the working environment, it has become important to study organization culture (Cruess and et.al., 2015). Culture exists every organization that influences group performance or performance of an individual. Stress is a dynamic condition that confronts an individual with immense opportunities that are uncertain. Sometimes, this condition motivates the employees while other times it turn out to be worse (Sharma & Rush, 2014). Both the factors namely, stress and culture may influence the individual in an effective manner. Therefore, it is important to pullout the relationship between work culture and stress so as to enhance the performance of an organization in an effective manner. This relationship will help in understanding the roles or managing stress on work culture so that it can be applied in the real life business situations (Ratanasiripong, Park, Ratanasiripong & Kathalae, 2015). In order to understand this relationship, work culture of Google is being identified so that the phenomenon can be understood in a better way through practical examples from MNC. Google provides all kind of facilities to their employees in order to keep the stress free and motivate them to accomplish their targets by providing good work culture.
The stated research project will help the future researchers or students in understanding the linkage of stress and work culture on the performance of the organization. Stress can lead to serious health issues for the employees as well as for the organization. Thus, it is important for both that is, individual and companies to look into this matter in order to improve their business operations (Holton, Barry & Chaney, 2016). Appropriate research can help the organization in achieving their business goals in an effective manner. Through this report, the present work culture and stress management policy of the Google can be known so as to identify their business operation. This will also help in knowing the tools and techniques used by google to motivate their employee and their work culture that reduces the stress among employees and encourages them to fulfill their personal as well as organizational goals. Further, this research can provide information regarding the methods and approaches through stress can be managed among employees and this can help in creating a better work culture within the organization.
Justification And Potential Output Of The Research
Organizational culture comes under the topic of organization behavior. It is often said that organization culture has a direct impact on the performance of the organization. The definition of the work culture includes various patterns of values, behavior, attitude, intentions and result of the work (Ebert and et.al., 2018). The concept of organizational culture aims at providing comfort and safety to their employees so that they can work effectively and contribute in the success of the business. Corporate culture are the intangible assets that the firm use to differentiate themselves from the rivalry firm. Culture not only helps in enhancing the performance of the organization but also increase the corporate reputation. To understand the culture in an effective manner various researchers have propounded various theories to understand the different types of work culture in an organization (Rosenberg, et.al., 2015). First theory is, Consistency Theory, this theory states that organization tend to have strong cultures that are well integrated, coordinated and consistent. This type or consistency highlights the stability and internal integration of the firm. Second theory is, Involvement Theory, this theory states that involvement and participation of employee will increase the sense of responsibility in them and through this they will contribute maximum in achieving the targets of the business (Vargas, et.al., 2014). Third theory is, Mission Theory, in this theory mission, objectives and goals of the firm are being shared between the managers, employees and all the people so that all can collectively work together to achieve the organizational goals. Fourth theory is, Adaptability Theory, this, theory states that organizations that are well integrated takes time to adapt to the changing business environment, hence an organization need to be adaptable and these forces driven by customer demands, market uncertainty and changing business environment.
In the context of organization, stress can cause various harm to the employees. In short, excessive stress can cause the workforce to often fall sick, become less efficient, deterioration in the inter-personal relationship and at last causing ineffectiveness in business operations. Further, increased stress can also lead to and eventually quitting the job. Many definitions are being proposed by different researcher. However, stress mainly refers to the forces that exerts physical as well as psychological function beyond the range of its stability (Suffian, Rohani, & Mariam, 2018). Stress is the most common phenomenon in the huge organizations and the individuals have prepared themselves for these stress. Various issues that can trigger stress among the employees can be, demand for the task, rapid changing technology, uncertainty in the job roles and responsibilities, handling of customer complaints, workplace harassment, etc (Yildiz, Alpkan, Ates & Sezen, 2015). However, many organizations have found various ways through which stress can be reduced among the employees. Further, a review of literature has also found many techniques to reduce the stress level among employees. Both the organization as well as individuals will have to contribute simultaneously to reduce this issue. For the organization it is important to limited and flexible working hours to their employees for completion of their task. Thus, such policies will help the employees in their work life balance and they will also be reduced from the burden of overload work (Shamim, Cang & Yu, 2017). Besides, management should also promote sharing of work or tasks, this will help them in reducing their work load and all the employees will be free in les times so that they can also focus on their personal lives. Further, the management can provide sports facilities to their employees and few tea breaks so that the employees can feel relaxed and can continue their work in a fresh mood (Singh & Ahuja, 2015).
Conceptual Framework: Concept of Organizational Culture
Google is one of the leading internet industry that works with more than thousands of employees in their organization. Thus, to maintain the prime position of the company it is obvious that they would have to work harder. To stay competitive and maintain leadership position they have to work with their large workforce so that they can achieve their business targets in an effective manner (Mutambara, Botha & Bisschoff, 2014). Thus, the firm has applied various methods to manage the level of stress in their employees. First method is, providing fun loving business environment, in this employees can relax, enjoy music or can do fun activities so that their mood can be refreshed. Through this, employees feel motivated at the workplace. Second, Google provides flexible working environment to their employees. There are no strict protocols in the organization in fact there are no common uniform for the employees (Samarasinghe, 2018). Thirdly, Google, allows their employees to bring their hobbies and pets to the office so that they can feel relaxed and stress free while playing with their pets. Fourthly, they provide Corporate Sponsored Childcare facility to their employees. Employees need to get membership with the Childcare Centre that are fully sponsored by Google, and after that they can send their Child so that they need not have to worry about their children and can work tension free.
In this highly competitive, dynamic and fast changing industry, Google has a widely acknowledged work culture. Besides, the work culture of the Google is said to be the most important factor for their high level of performance. Thus, the management follow few methods through which they have achieved the best work culture in their organizations (Pa?ao?lu & Tonus, 2014). Google has a team oriented culture that focuses on team work in their organization, whereby individual performances are encouraged and team performances are being rewarded. Google follows a creative culture in their working environment. Employees are supposed to think out of the box so that they can provide an innovative idea. Further they are also motivated to take risk so that they can creatively solve the problem. Besides these methods, the company also take care at the time of recruitment and selection of their employees. They hire only those employees who embrace company’s values and beliefs. The major objective of Google while hiring their employees is to select those candidates who are willing to work in the team and can provide various creative ideas that can help the organization in achieving their goals.
Research Approach is a systematic plan and procedure that consists of various steps of broad assumptions to detailed method of data analysis, collection and interpretation. Research approach helps in creating structured research of the particular issue and helps in developing reliable results from the same (Baron, Franklin & Hmieleski, 2016). The present research project examines impact of stress management and organizational culture on employees and company’s performance. In order to achieve the results of the studies, quantitative approach and qualitative approach both will be applied. This approach will help in getting the accurate and reliable data for the study. And thus, the results can be evaluated effectively by adopting this approach. Once the approach is being identified, next work is to collect the data regarding the same. Data collection is also an important task in order to achieve accuracy in the research.
Data collection is the most vital task in the research project as it provides practical data of the reports through which appropriate analysis can be done. There are basically two types of data Primary Data and Secondary Data. Primary data is the one which is collected first time directly from the selected population (Sharma & Rush, 2014). This helps in creating significant impact on research analysis. The primary data from the present research will be collected using survey method. The population of the research is workforce of Google. Survey method will be used to collect the new and fresh data for the study. For this structured questionnaire will be prepared which will consist of both open and closed ended questions.
Secondary data on the other hand will be collected through wide range of sources such as books, journals, online resources, news articles and magazines. This will help in attaining published data for the study which will help in ensuring the authenticity of the evaluation.
Sampling helps the researcher in attaining a specific and presentable part of the population through which effective data could be attained for the study. The present research project examines impact of stress management and organizational culture on employees and company’s performance. A sample size of 50 employees of the company working on different levels will be selected and surveyed. They will help in attaining well defines information for the study. Random sampling method will be adopted to ensure the accuracy and minimum biases in the study.
Data analysis is the aspect which focuses on efficiently presenting the findings of the study. Both and quantitative and qualitative means of data analysis measures are available for researches. The present study will adopt the mixed means of data analysis. Thematic analysis will help in developing related themes for the study to attain the research objectives. Quantitative analysis on the other hand will be adopted where by the findings of the research will be presented through tables and graphs to develop an effective understating of the analysis.
Undertaking research is always challenging for the researcher as it involves in-depth analysis on single topic. The topic for the present study was to analyze the impact of stress on employee performance in organizations. Case study of Google was undertaken for the same. Due to limited time and resources the research was undertaken for one company only. This may create a biased outcome because of similar employee perception.
