Key Course Learning Outcomes
The main objective of this report is to identify the key capabilities of leadership. As part of the topic, I choose the self-confidence as key competencies of leadership. Specifically, I think believing in own self is important to develop trust and believe among others which can only possible through developing self-confidence. I will choose three diagnostic tools related to my topic and compare the result with connecting my recent experience. In addition to this. I will identify the lack of areas to improve self-confidence. Moreover, I will explain about key theories related to self-confidence and its application to develop leadership behavior after research and study of different books, journal articles, and reports. Furthermore, I will include precise and clear action plan with a time frame to enhance my lacking areas for competencies of leadership.
Generally, self- confidence is the strength of mine to perform or handle any issue and task. Moreover, my self-confidence capacity will diagnose using three diagnostic tools. Firstly, Big five personality test will identify about our self how we behave personally and our characteristics. Furthermore, personality test includes 46 question where we have to attempt all of them to reflect our personality. so, I attempt all the question from top to bottom where I answer truth and honesty to know about myself. Moreover, it evaluates mine personality from how I react to every circumstances and situation and my reflection through the big five personality test. More specifically, I must choose every answer in terms of agreement and disagreement level from high to low. I found my result in different five personality which is express in terms of percentile. As a result, I found that, the major percentile as 71 show in Neuroticism which show that I have very anxious and nervous. so, it shows that my got 1, 35, 15, 38n percentile in Openness, Conscientiousness, extraversion, and Agreeableness respectively. overall, I am nervous and it fell comfort to expresses my thoughts to others. it makes clear that I am quiet worry and nervous as a person which is identified through big five personality test. As for my recent experience around one and half year ago, I work in a company where our department has to present the progress report in every six months to board of director, chairman, and another stakeholder. as coincidence, I had selected as the representative as a spokesman for our department to present the half year progress report in the meeting. I was well prepared for the meeting to present the whole progress of our department even though I was unable to present well. So, I was afraid to the mass of the people and even answer them to question related to our department. Now, the result of the diagnostic test and my recent experience shows that I so feel anxiety nervous person. It means that my self-confidence level is weak.
Diagnostic Tests for Self-Confidence
secondly, I choose Authentic leadership self-Assessment questionnaire as the diagnostic tools to identify about my self-confidence level in terms of self-awareness. In this test, I attempt 16 question to know about the Authentic leadership skill about myself. so, I focused on self-awareness competencies and look for that in detail through this test. I answer every question as an option such as: strongly agree, agree, neutral, Disagree and strongly disagree. After Calculation of the points, I receive from answering the question is 13 for self-awareness competencies which are below than 15. It shows that I have low self-awareness which is not good to become a successful leader. For Instance, I am as leading person of my department in the company, so, my responsibility is faced with the problem especially in my department. I receive an email from Company Board of director and CEO addressing that my department progress is not satisfactory. Then after, I immediately replied to a request to arrange a meeting as soon as possible with them. Because, I was not aware of the situation in the meeting, I unable to explain them about our department performance. As a result, they were unsatisfied with my evidence and defensive idea for each question. This is all happening because I was not too aware of the situation that can happen in the meeting. I only think in a defensive way and less prepared to clear my thought to make clear of lacking performance in my department. After attempting diagnostic test and correlation g my experience shows that I develop more Self- Awareness.
lastly, situation leadership Questionnaire tool is to check my ability how I deal with the situation and identified the competencies of my leadership techniques. I answer for each different situation and the analysis was based on my result. After completing the whole test, my leadership style was distinguishing based on the answer. the result identified the leadership style such as telling, selling, participating and delegating. after the analysis of result, it makes clear that I am less participating in each situation. I am want to escape with the problem and the complication situation which make me less facilitating person. I am not a too much-participating person as I think before was clear from this test.
After using three diagnostic test and correlating to my personal work experience, I found some lacking in myself which I should focus. I choose self-confidence as leadership capabilities which I give importance in my life to become a successful leading person. Therefore, self- awareness, and Neuroticism are the key competencies which will improve to strengthen my leadership capabilities.
Results and Correlation of Diagnostic Tests
In general, self-confidence is importance key capability to become successful leader and it is describing as the judgment of each person express as how they think their self (Hollenbeck. G. & Hall.D, 2004). The literature will be based on self-confidence as leadership capabilities and its key competencies that need to address. Leader should be self-confidence and believe their own self. We should learn from our mistake, and receive feedback then implement in our life. people should be self-aware and less nervousness to develop self-confidence.
More specifically, self-confidence correlated with metacognition which is measured through via using two method such as: Memory and Reasoning Competency Inventory(MARCI) and Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) (Scharaw & Dennison, 1994).
Firstly, MAI contains 52 question which will assist to know about our self and understanding self-awareness of our metacognitive processes. This process mainly deals with knowledge and regulation of the own cognition.so, it measures about people perception how they understand, thinks, plans and execute for anything happen in their life. As matter fact, this method can identify the weakness and strength of people. Hence, MAI is the test to measure self-confidence of people. Secondly, MARCI is designed to know about our memory and thinking to deal with every circumstance occur in our life. This process includes the questionnaire which collects information about the people self-concepts. self-confidence and Self-concepts are assumed as distinct with the empirical evidence. MARCI is based on self-concepts which are formed by own experience and surrounding (Marsh, Byrne, & Shavelson, 1992). so, self-confidence depends upon the memory and the capacity for reasoning which is measured by MARCI as competency component.
self-confidence is mention by two different theory which is the wheel of Wellness and Implicit vs. Explicit theory. Firstly, wheel of wellness is the first model introduced to know the people psychology and find out characteristics of wealthier people who is living quality life (Sweeney & Witmer, 1991). Alder included three main things that we have to do in our entire life such as work, love, and friendship whereases other two task is added self and spirit (Moask & Dreikurs, 1967). The wheel of wellness model carried out 12 subtask of self-direction such as: sense of worth, sense of control, realistic beliefs, self-care, stress management, gender identity, nutrition, problem solving and creativity, emotional awareness and coping , culture identity, exercise and stress management (Myers et al., 2000.) self -direction acts as like spokes in wheel and relate to self-management which lead to meet the Adler’s three task for life.
The Importance of Self-Confidence in Leadership
The wellness of lifestyle is evaluated via different researcher to incorporates to assess every part of the wheel of wellness model Components. moreover, seven studies were conducted in past to enhance the psychometric properties of Wellness of Lifestyle.
in above figure, different life task is expressed in terms of the wheel where every task is connected to our life which help to know the people own self and wellness of people. more specifically, the wellbeing of people lifestyle connected to know the health and people connection towards to establishing the good relationship of love, friendship as working with others. Different characteristics of people expressed as the spokes of a wheel in the for self-direction of people which is surrounded by love, friendship, and work. it leads people to interconnected to deal in community, governments, family, media etc. so, self-direction is connecting to the self-confidence of people. if we have proper self-direction in our life, it will make people more self-confidence. it is obvious that leader who has proper self- direction will entirely aware themselves about everything that can happen in their life. hence, these capabilities lead to becoming more self- confident as the leader which well expresses in the wheel of wellness model.
in addition to this, an implicit vs explicit model which expressed the self-confidence. Implicit is defined as the something that is understood which is not expressed clear and direct whereas explicit entails that something that clearly mentions. implicit deals with the situation which can come in our daily life than how we deal with them as showing intelligence. it is found that weak correlation between the implicit and explicit self-esteem of the people. if we are not sure in our self how to deal with the things that can happen in our life, it can lead to harm our performance in between different people such as in any organization. some research. explained that implicit as less consciousness within our self, it means that we are not sure to deal with the circumstance and the situation that can happen by unknowing in our life. every people have distinct self-perception which lead them to show their behavior toward the task they deal to resolve it. The comparison between explicit and implicit model lead to knowing the people self-esteem toward the situation which faces by the people reflect their behavior as a leader. it makes clear that leader can cope with a task which can be uncleared or directly expresses.
Moreover, Implicit vs Explicit model clearly mention that how we should confidence about the issues or problem that can occur in our life. The main gist of the theory is applicable to develop the confidence level in our self through dealing the clear situation and the indirect problem. so, it will give the precise idea about dealing task which reflects us in our surrounding to show higher confidence level. Then, we will lead the people, if we have proper confidence level to deal with a different task in our life.
