Treatment of disabled people in society
Topic: People With A Mental Disability Or Handicap Are Not Treated As Equally As People Withour A Mental Disability Or Handicap
This is a representation of the claim that disabled people are not treated equally when compared to people without disability.
The comparison between disabled people and ordinary people shows that often disabled people are treated with inequality, intentionally and unintentionally. They are scared of getting judged by the society. They are also influenced by the people in the society and the judgement that is passed onto them due to their physical and psychological disabilities. This confuses people with physical inability or mental disorder leading to them feeling underconfident and raising questions on their self-worth.
Hook
Individuals with physical and mental disability of an experience objective behaviour towards them in terms of the people in their surroundings.
Bridge
When evaluating a child who has disability, physical or intellectual it can be identified that people experience different treatment from others when compare to people without disability. Evaluating the conditions of disabled people such as being physical handicapped, mentally sick, disorders and others are often identified as different and accordingly the different signs and symptoms of these ailments are judged by the society (Burns). In the novel by John Steinbeck, it has been shown that that the mentally disabled Lenny is often judged by people in the farm due to his disability considering he is physically strong but mentally he is like a child.
Thesis
This is a representation of the claim that disabled people are not treated equally when compared to people without disability.
Topic sentence
The issue that has been identified is the way the society or a community treats people with mental or physical disability. In the novel, Candy says, “I won’t have no place to go, an’ I can’t get no more jobs.” (Steinbeck 222).
Example, reason, detail or fact
Which reflects on the fear of Candy that the people on the farm will “dispose” of him. It is this insecurity that people having disability due to some sickness or injury often experience or go through considering they are impacted greatly by the behaviour, the society caters towards them.
Explanation
As an individual, the disabled people in the novel experience serious human rights issues in terms of not receiving write full employment opportunities as well as mental health or physical disability support. The economic crisis that many of these disable characters experience is actually a reflection and representation of reality (Johnson). The foreshadowing of characters such as Lenny having a disability or Candy’s dog having a disability are a reflection of the need and the support that they receive from George in Candy. This not only helps them define their disability but also their individual personality in the process.
Topic sentence
In United States, for a very long time there was a system against mental health and substance abuse conditions where the insurers could limit their contribution to these cases leading to parents to pay for medical conditions.
Experiences of disabled people in the novel Of Mice and Men
This is an open declaration of partiality against the mentally sick and physically handicapped people in the country and it was finally put to end through The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health parity and Addiction Equity Act on October 3, 2008 (Burns).
With the implementation of the legislation, it was clear that the government was more aware of the formal equality that is being proposed to the individuals however it is not being preached.
To eradicate inequalities in health care it is important for the government as well as the people of a country to treat law seriously as well as implement it for individuals and help them who cannot help themselves. The real individualistic experience of equality can only be understood from a perspective of a disabled person in terms of the disparity as well as the respectability that the experience in accordance to receiving treatment for their health conditions.
The judgement is often an integral part of every individual in the society who is not experiencing the oppressive behaviour or treatment leading to questionable circumstances and existential crisis of these individuals (Johnson).
Topic sentence
The mentally disabled or handicapped people are treated with inequality in terms of real life though on papers, it is very clear that everyone must be treated as equal be it an individual with disability or none.
There are people who have been rendered disabled due to an injury or sickness and as patients, they require more medical care and supports considering their conditions however, they always do not get enough support.
In the society, these people an identified as burden and therefore there are often felt as if they are not included leading to the feeling of being left out or judged (Johnson).
The inequality that arises against mentally disturbed or handicapped people is not only due to intentional approach towards these people but there are times when people without any disability forget that disabled people might find a certain action or an event to be difficult. To consider an individual in their entirety is important in terms of their personality, perception, as well as their integration into the society.
It is therefore observed that often handicapped people or disabled people are not considered when there is a certain step or an announcement to be made for the people of the country. In recent times these aspects have been changing and people with disability have been considered when designing public transportation, public places such as hotels, restaurants, washrooms and other events or situations (Towery et al. 67).
Conclusion
Finally in conclusion, it can be stated that there have been policies and administrative approaches where inequality has been practised against disabled people, both mental and physical. Issues have been identified in terms of right to employment, right to education, right to basic amenities and others. It is these limitations that often develops in securities and inferior complex among individuals who are mentally and physically disabled thus creating a system where unintentional oppression is a common activity against handicapped people.
Based on the novel Of Mice and Men, candy as a character shows disabilities which is not considered his weakness and it is a way of belonging to a place. The book tries to spread awareness about the insecurities of disabled people as well as the intentional and unintentional and mistreatment of disabled individuals by the society.
Often the state and the national administration of a country do not take responsibility of the medical support or conditions that must be supported by the government for each and every citizens in consequential of their physical or psychological disability.

I chose this source because it explains the different ways a person with disabilities can get help. In the book “Of Mice and Men”, Lennie needed help but was not able to get the help he needed because of the time period he was living in. |

I chose this source because it helps describe reasons why Lennie can get violent at times. He had a hard time understanding things the way other people without disabilities did. He didn’t realize what he was doing was wrong. |
