Impact of Education and Cultural and Socio-political Factors
Public Health refers to the aim that focus on improving, enhancing and protecting the health and wellbeing of the people. They also aim at creating a healthy environment by minimizing the number of sufferers, educating them, and conducting many awareness programs. There are huge number of public health care initiatives which helps to increase the life cycle of the people. The initiatives are vaccinations, family planning, motor vehicles safety, clean water and many more (Baum, 2016). In the given case study, educating family members will for sure improve their health. There are many health issues a person suffers and which will not only affect the sufferer but also the family members and the society as well. On the contrary, let us suppose there exists a family, and a member is suffering from heart failure, this will depress all the other members as well in terms of expenses and emotions as well.
Let us take an example of the case study given. Saddiq is suffering from type 2 diabetes and heart failure as well. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common form of diabetes which affects 95% of the 13 million men. They produce insulin which is called insulin resistance. The body increases the amount of sugar and the body cells fails to work properly. A person feels dehydrated and it damages the eyes, nerve cells, kidney and heart and predispose a person to atherosclerosis of the huge number of arteries which causes heart attack and stroke as well. It also damages the overall function of the body and a person cannot perform well his/her daily activities. So, in the case, Saddiq is also suffering from the given issues.
A part from this, it not only the individual who have to suffer but the society and family members also have to suffer a lot. It is very difficult to manage such person who suffers from diabetes. According to a study conducted, it is shown that 63% of the family members suffers from anxiety about what are the complications of diabetes and how would it affect the lives of a sufferer. In the given case, since Saddiq is suffering from diabetes, he may lead to blindness and he is already suffering from heart failure. This has become a great disadvantage for the family members. Saddiq may be physically frustrated and this will affect his wife too. She may not get love and affection from her husband. In addition to this, he will not be able to perform well at the workplace and generate income. Moreover, he is not educated as well. It will not suffer his job but also reduce the income of the family. Fatima will also suffer and be more attentive enough to take care of her husband because she will also be affected mentally, economically and physically.
Health Issues and Priority Problems
There are many factors like socio-political, educational and cultural factors which aim at influencing and motivating the health of the people.
Education plays a major role to motivate people to lead a healthy life. When people are educated, they have the capability to think better and lead a prosperous life. Educated people are not likely to suffer from diseases because they are aware of all the pros and cons of activities involved in health issues. If people are educated, they can well decide about the quality life. Likewise, cultural factors also influence the life of people and motivate them to create a healthy environment (Cuñado and de Gracia, 2012). Cultural factors include traditional beliefs, values and norms that must be strictly followed. The traditions followed helps to create a hygienic effects and also teaches to control over sexual problems (Chickering, Dalton and Stamm, 2015). Socio-political factors also inspire the living standards of the people. Social factors include population, age distribution, career attitudes, and health and safety consciousness. These factors helps to motivate the life of an individual. The emerging trends in the markets helps to identify the demand of the people and also help them to choose the best product that will be suitable for their health (Kahu, 2013). For an instance, a child aged between 10-12years may not adapt healthy products because of the lack of knowledge (Cromley and McLafferty, 2011).
There are several issues related to health which must be taken care of at the highest priority. Some of the issues are mentioned below (Bowling, 2014).
- Health transition
- Issues related to poverty and deprivation
- Globalization
- Economic and financial problems
- Public health ethics
- Issues related to environment such as changes in climate.
According to the case study given, the main issue that can be related to the case is the issue of poverty and transition. The family is not educated that enough to prevent all those health related issues. Deprivation is that stage when there is lack of income and other resources and this generates to poverty as well. Most of the family members in the given case are uneducated and since, they are Muslim family, they believe being at home at working. They are never involved in health care programs and are unaware about the health related issues as well. Deprivation affects the living standard of the members and income, resources and customs are badly affected by it. Fatima and her husband are suffering from disease and they are unaware about the effects of it. They could not treat themselves because of the lack of education and income. In addition to this, they do not enough resources to take care of them as well.
Diversity, Spiritual Beliefs, and Language Challenges
Diversity, spiritual beliefs and language challenges contribution to vulnerability and exclusion. The relationship between religions and languages and beliefs plays a major role in the life of an individual. It also include some paranormal beliefs, and metal disorder as well. Religion is the human pursuit that affects many cultures and their moral ideas and beliefs. Given in the case study, it is a Muslim family who is highly devoted towards their norms. They keep on doing fasts since whole day which can also be a reason for creating health issues. It also aim at influencing the thinking capacity of the people and focus on providing the insight to think better. Many exercises, social norms has been build and designed to be followed in order to release the unnecessary stress in an individual (Bircher and Kuruvilla, 2014). People today have spiritual beliefs and they trust on them without a second thought. This may lead to unnecessary changes in the mental and physical health of the people. People may start thinking what is actually not required or sometimes which cannot be even tolerated in the real society as well. Language also plays a major ole which has contributed to vulnerability. For an example, a person who is suffering from major health issues and the issue can be treated in other countries which uses other languages. In such case, it will be very difficult for the victim to get the better treatment because one may not be able to understand the language properly (Paniagua, 2013).
Let us take an example of the case study given, Saddiq is 85 years old and Fatima is 82. Fatima does not speak English which may create problems in solving the issues related. She might not be able to take proper treatments as his husband is suffering from heart failure and diabetes as well. Even Fatima is suffering from left CVA. One must be educated enough so that he/she can take care of his/her family and solve health related issues. There are many factors that can be developed from the given case study but the major problem is educational factor. If Fatima was educated, she would have been taken care of all her family members as well as oneself.
Sometimes, there occurs a stressful situation as seen in the given case, when one is not able to think and may suffer from mental illness, and other endocrine diseases. However, many contradictory results had also been found to cure such problems. Likewise, higher intrinsic orientation helps in reducing the higher risk of depression. Here, Fatima may be able to suffer from other diseases apart from CVA.
Stressful Situations and Mental Health Problems
There are several health care services that allow people to take the references and treat them well. The common health problems seen in the society are drug problems and alcohol problems. Many therapies has been introduced to take care of such patients. Let us come to workplace, if you are not feeling well, one can take the help of occupational health services which is available nearby. If someone is at school or college, mental health care may also be available sometimes (Blas and Kurup, 2010).
There are also many organization who offers helps to handle such problems and they also aim at recommending the appropriate solutions to the problems as well. Is case of some local support or any additional requirement of health services, one may search for Mental Health support services and Mental Health support services for young people. There are list of people who will always be available for the patients and listen to the victims. These helpline numbers have plenty of volunteers who understand the problem of the victim and provide them the best treatment and suggestions as well. For an instance, the Samaritans operates a free to call service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for people who want to talk in confidence. Call them on 116 123 or visit the Samaritans website. They also aim at providing psychological therapy services to the patients and moreover patients are treated and cured on one to one basis. While they are under the therapy session, sometimes the organization also involve the victim’s peers and families so that they will be happier. Similarly, one has also the legal right to choose the provider and clinical team which best suits them. It is quite easy to get access to the health services. One should simply enter the name of the services with postal code and later choose among the several directories such as Anxiety services, eating disorder services, depression services and many more. Once the service provider has been chosen, a professional or consultant will be hired who will lead to the victim and provide appropriate care (Thoits, 2013).
In the given case study, the problems generated can easily be cured by community nursing. People living in the society can help each other and get the problems cured easily. One who have better knowledge can help others who don’t.
There are many Social, health and behavioral sciences theory in relation to public health initiatives and strategies to support and empower people. Two most commonly used model is Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory. I have chosen this theory because it helps to best analyze the health issues related to the case given.
Health belief model is the theory of health behavior which is widely used in the health services field. This model was introduced in order to understand and know the reason behind why patients did not use the preventive measures which were offered to them in order to get cured. The treatment such as influenza vaccines, mammography screening were introduced to cure the lifestyle of the individuals and reduce the risk of injury. This theory also aim at the analyzing whether the people are at risk or not and what are the major source of health problems. Further this model also helps people to take corrective actions and inspire themselves to follow all the corrective measures. This model has also been applied for prevention related concerns like early cancer detection. Majorly, it focuses on reducing the risk for cardiovascular diseases (Glanz and Bishop, 2010). In the given case study, Fatima and her husband can use preventive measures and take corrective actions to cure their problems.
Social Cognitive Theory is the theory which has been proposed by Bandura. It helps to analyze the human behavior using three different ways i.e. dynamic, reciprocal and behavior continually interact. It state that changes in the behavior can easily be examined when one is highly involved in counseling. The main motto of this theory to state that people do not always learn from their own experiences. It is sometimes they also learn things when they watch others doing the same. The major elements of this theory are observational learning, reinforcement, self-control and self-efficacy (Schiavo, 2013).
Now, it can be analyzed from the above mentioned theory that health belief model is the best suitable theory for the problem analyzed in the case of Saddiq. This theory helps to understand the cause and effects of the disease. Since, saddiq is suffering from diabetes and heart failure, this model will help him to take the preventive measures and inspire him to take better care of him.
Service users and carers plays a different role on the service industry. However, they both aims at improving the health of the individual and providing the maximum benefits to the victims. Individuals who have experiences of mental health can easily access and gain the information and know it very well but when it comes to unexperienced one, it becomes difficult to know and understand the major concerns. There are many experts and professionals who provide proper guidelines on mental health issues. They are able to make contributions by highlighting the concerns of health related problems and solving them as well. They identify the gaps and innovate new ideas of service users and carers. Service users’ aims at creating a credibility to projects while carers’ aims at improving the recruitment process and focus on misconception of “difficult to reach”. Victims becomes more comfortable when they find someone who can best understand their problems. Service users are not employed by the Trust and usually they are independent. They are able to build huge level of trust among the victims and service providers and here, victims are more honest to give feedbacks (Tones, Robinson and Tilford, 2013).
Informal care refers to taking care and supporting the sick without any personal benefits. It included help apart from the financial activities. They usually support the victims morally and consolidate them. According to national survey conducted in 1995, 1:8 adults in Britain aims at providing informal care and 1:6 home includes a carers. It was further estimated that nearly, 7 million customers were involved in informal care out of which major of them were females. Moreover, 10,000 of the carers are under 18 years who provided personal benefits such as dressing, cleaning, washing and many more to the sufferer (Woods, 2010). Similarly, the other members living in the family can also support and take care of each other as seen in the case study.
People identity and self-worth are most confusing words which has been widely used. They both are closely related to each other and in order to develop self-esteem, a strong sense of identity must be taken under consideration. These both factors are equally important to gain a good mental and physical health. The sense of identity helps to know and understand what one thinks and how one perceive the things differently. It shows how one define himself/herself. While self-esteem defines how person value oneself. It is something related to self-worth. These both factors affect the mental health of an individual in an adverse way. The changes in the behavior also affects these factors (Stefanone, Lackaff and Rosen, 2011).
It is very important to know how one should develop self-esteem and create a self-worth for oneself. It generally happens that a person having low self-esteem basically suffers from mental issues regarding health. Low esteemed person cannot contribute to better health while a person having high self-esteem will be confident enough to lead a healthy and better life.
Developing and understanding the sense of identity and creating a self-worth is very significant. Those who have strong a high sense of identity can be easily influenced by others and they can easily get attracted towards others. They may have difficulty in making decisions and they also may get involved in unnecessary relation. People who are suffering from low esteem power suffer from problems such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Sometimes they may also get addicted to alcohol or drugs as well. It can be stated that these factors do not only contribute to low esteem but then there are also other many causes involved. People who are suffering from low esteem suffer from behavior problems and trouble in figuring out the changes in the physical and mental activities (Brownson, Baker, Deshpande and Gillespie, 2017).
There are many steps that are involved in creating higher self-esteem. One must be clear about who they are and what they believe. Once an individual decide to make any positive changes in his/her life, he/she must understand personal identity. There are many therapy which can be adapted to develop self-esteem. People who have low self-esteem have impacts on their daily life. People having symptoms such as bulimia, binge, body dimorphic disorder and anorexia usually have low self-esteem. A professional treatment will help an individual to identify self-esteem.
In all the partnerships, who work for services or organizations, the outcomes generated can be both negative and positive as well. The factors that may promote the inter-professional working are mentioned below.
Partnership philosophies helps to achieve benefits to the service users. Advices related to wellbeing will help to deliver a positive impact on others. Likewise, empowerment in health and social care also helps to give authority to the staffs and the caretakers to better take care of all the health related activities. This also make sure that every individual has equal right to make choices that will be best suitable for them. Staffs and the victims are taken prosper care of so that they will not lose they identity and they can create their own self-worth (NHS Foundation Trust, 2018).
Besides of these all, there are barriers for service users such as anger, abuse, miscommunication and neglect. It is very important to communicate the right message at the right time when working in any organization in partnership. Coherent work practices must be followed by the care users in order to achieve a common approach towards organization vision. Working with collaboration is a difficult task which comes with huge number of challenges and hindrances. For an example, an organization follows the culture of top down management style instead of following open collaborative style (Beaglehole and Dal Poz, 2003).
There is lack of knowledge and skills required to complete the assigned task. Imbalances between the powers and positions may take place which can lead to changes in the attitude and values. Funding can also be another barrier while working in a partnership. One service provider may or may not have sufficient funding to be spent (Cameron, Lart, Bostock and Coomber, 2017).
There are many practices and policies which needs to be followed in public health sector in order to improve the quality life of the people and their health related issues. Training is one of the most important tool that helps to increase knowledge and define the role of the nurses and care providers in a more précised form. Training helps the care provider to know what they are supposed to do and what they are supposed to avoid. Proper training also helps to know one’s duties and roles. There are also many legislations that are to be followed to enhance the health benefits in the hospitals (Adams and Dickinson, 2010).
As a results, it can be concluded that health of an individual plays a crucial role. There are many factors that affect the health of an individual which must be avoided at highest priority. However, there are also some factors that promote health services as well. Thus, it can also be stated that service users and carers are also major factor that influence in taking better care of oneself. Nevertheless, Fatima along with her family should also take help of other community members and use their advices as well. She should educate all her family members so that they can take care of all the health issues.
