When being part of a society it hard for you to do things that are different without getting hate for it. In the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Junior decides to leave the rez and go to another school. The school he decides to go to is Reardan, it an all-white school with a red skin Indian as their mascot. At the rez, the people aren’t happy that he transferred to an all-white school that not on the rez.
The rez members feel like Junior Betrayed them. Even junior thinks he has betrayed them. According to Junior “You can’t just betray your tribe and then change your mind ten minutes later.” (Alexie 55). Junior knows if he changes his mind the rez would kill him because he even thought of leaving. In Junior words “ I was on a one-way bridge. There was no way to turn around, even if I wanted to. Since junior is part of the rez it hard for him to get a equal opportunity due to his cultural background and people hating him for it.
In the podcast the people form the normandy district got hated on by the francis howell parents and students for the fact they were mainly all black and had a bad school. These were the words of one francis howell mom “Is there going to be metal detectors? I’m no expert, but we aren’t talking about the Normandy School district losing accreditation because of their buildings, their structures, or their teachers,’ Beth Cirami, a Francis Howell parent, said.
‘We are talking about violent behavior that is (going to be) coming in with my first grader.'(podcast). The people are being discriminated because they’re black and they want an equal education so they can get and equal opportunity. This shows that since they are where a black school and have a different culture it hard for them to get equal opportunity.
Can separate opportunities be equal opportunities? Manny people ask if sepreate opprutinty can equal same oppurtnutty and today where going to go over seprate oppurtnuty and if they lead to same oppurtnuty. In the book The True Diary of a Part-time Indian Junior goes to his first day of high school and is ready to learn and when he gets his math book and opens and he is about to kiss it because he loves learning he sees his mother name in the book. This ment the book was super old and his own mom used when she was in high school. According to junior I was staring at a geometry book that was at least thirty years older than I was (Alexie’s 31).
This shows him going to a differnt school which is a seprate opputunity not leading to same oppurtunty becasue you cant learn out of a book that thirty plus years old. The book being that old can have inaccurate information and not meet the standrads for geomtry these days. In the podcast students at normandy didn’t learn according to maria a student that attend normandy. The school lost accreditation which means they won’t have any funding and colleges and university may not recognize diplomas from the school. This shows that different opportunity does not equal same opportunity since they won’t be able to go to college since the school doesn’t have accreditation.
